In an era of TikTok micro-aesthetics and uber-fast fashion, it can feel like someone hit the superspeed button on the trend cycle. Knowing what’s hot – and, crucially, what’s not – is trickier yet simultaneously more important than ever before. But among the chaos of trying to keep your finger on the sartorial style pulse, denim is a consistent and reliable wardrobe staple.

For many, jeans are a core part of an ‘unofficial’ uniform, with various fits, washes and silhouettes providing the base for endless outfits. With such breadth in design, denim trends tend to stick around for a while – and their durability means you could wear yours for years. Also, when your go-to style starts to feel a little dated, it’s easy to subtly switch it up without having to buy a whole new wardrobe.

With spring on the horizon, now is the perfect time to reassess your denim collection and fill any gaps. So, we spoke to industry experts for their take on the silhouettes gaining momentum and the washes that will revive your wardrobe this year, to bring you the ultimate guide to the hottest denim trends.

DITCH: Ankle-grazing jeans

TRY: Long and loose

Ankle-grazing jeans used to be the only leg length worth wearing. From straight cuts to kick-flare styles, hem lines finished a good few inches from the floor, so as to best showcase your footwear. However, in 2026, fashion is favouring long, fluid lines starting right at the waist, with plenty of room and breathability throughout the legs. You can’t go wrong with a wide-leg or a modern flare silhouette to create an elongated appearance.

Wide-leg jeans feel relaxed, so you can wear them with almost anything,” advises Serena Bute, whose eponymous label introduced denim for the first time in its S/S 26 collection. “I like to balance the shape with what you wear on top, so a simple top or tucked-in shirt works well.”

Black jeans have long filled the gap between the refinement of a trouser and the ease of a jean, but if you’re still wearing your OG Topshop Joni (guilty…), consider this your sign for a change-up. With the same ‘go-with-everything’ easy wearability, an inky blue/indigo shade of denim feels much more of the moment after the hue dominated the SS26 runways across the board. You’re looking for dark washes of navy blue that could almost be black but have a more luxurious vibe thanks to the richer blue-based tone.

There’s a collective move from raw towards refined across all denim trends this year, meaning your distressed jeans may want to take a back seat. Excessive rips, shredding and holes make jeans feel overly casual, as well as dated. Instead, if you’re after statement-making denim, look for understated details such as embellishments, turn-up cuffs and cross-over waistbands. Premium denim label Agolde has reported folded and twisted styles emerging as a significant trend.

Pantone’s colour of the year, Cloud Dancer (a billowy off-white), has no doubt influenced an increase in shades of white and cream prominent in denim this season, but neutral earth tones such as khaki and olive are also set to replace classic blue washes.

“Coloured denim gives spring outfits a lighter, more expressive feel,” says Rosie Ingleby, founder of London-based independent denim brand, Dala, which specialises in 100% rigid denim. “It allows for colour-led looks that still feel effortless and lived-in.”

Despite the near-constant debate surrounding skinnies ‘in or out’ status, this controversial silhouette has its die-hard fans. For a more modern take, opt for a cigarette or stovepipe style, as seen on the SS26 runways at the likes of Celine and Tibi. A fitted bootcut jean or a narrow straight leg also delivers the same polish as slim styles while feeling fresh and current.

“Every wardrobe needs a straight-leg jean – they are never not on trend,” says Dala’s Ingleby. “The right straight leg jean will always make you feel amazing.”
