Forget looking at the thermostat or checking the weather forecast, we knew the seasons were changing when the fashion girlies all collectively (or so it seemed... Did a group text go out?) donned their trench coats. Yep, there's no denying a trench's status as a wardrobe staple – especially in autumn. The perfect lightweight layer guaranteed to go with just about everything you own, there's good reason it remains popular year after year.
But this season, the classic silhouette has been reimagined in shorter, boxier designs. Leading the way on the AW25 runways was The Row, Toteme and Loewe, confirming the cropped trench coat should be the autumn jacket trend topping your wishlist. Even Burberry, who quite literally invented the garment, has backed the look. See Lila Moss on the front row of the fashion house's spring/summer 2026 show wearing a trench coat so micro, it was merely a cape covering the very tops of her shoulders.
Naturally, the high street has followed suit with its own iterations of cropped trench coats that can be easily subbed into your October outfit rotation if you're after a fresh take on a classic look. Wear it just as you would your longline trench. But, if the shorter hem lengths are throwing you off, we've scoured the street style set for inspo. Get ready to recreate the following looks ASAP...
With wide-leg jeans
Make the most of the short hem length and wear your cropped trench coat with wide-leg or baggy jeans. With less volume around your bottom half coming from your outerwear, your denim can more than make up for it.
With leggings
Alternatively, if you opt for an oversized or boxy cropped trench, balance proportions with leggings (but make them fashion) or similarly narrow trousers, like cigarette jeans.
With a mini skirt
Wearing a longline trench coat with a mini skirt can result in looking like you're wearing nothing but the trench coat... A cropped trench is the perfect match, marrying short hem lines with short hem lines.
Everyone's clicking on...
With a midi skirt
If you want to visually create the illusion of length, pair your cropped trench coat with a midi or maxi skirt to draw the eye down your ensemble.
With shorts and knee-high boots
Or, wearing tall, knee-high boots with a short hemline – like a pair of tailored shorts – also creates the same lengthening effect.
Over the top of a long-line coat
To take your trench coat into the truly cold weather of winter and get the most out of your wardrobe, try layering it over the top of a longline coat. Make sure your undercoat is in a neutral hue and pop the collar over the top so it can be seen at the top and bottom of your cropped trench. Obsessed!
With neutral colours
Cropped trench coats come in an array of colours and fabrics, but you can't go wrong with a classic beige colourway. Wear yours with similar hues, like a brown jumper and cream trousers, for an outfit that looks *so* expensive (even if it isn't!).
With head-to-toe black
Or, make your trench coat stand out with an all-black ensemble. Bonus style points if the buttons of your trench are black to coordinate.
