PSA: autumn and winter's new neutral is burgundy, a fashion trend we – and pretty much everyone with their finger on the sartorial pulse RN – are wholeheartedly embracing. The deep reddish hue can also be referred to as bordeaux, maroon, oxblood, port, merlot, pinot and wine, and it seems like the urge to wear it comes about pretty much as soon as the leaves start to change.
This year, the colour is taking over wardrobes one Instagram feed at a time, and we can’t lie – we love it! Maybe it’s down to how the romantic and moody tone gives off a luxury feel or maybe it’s the fact that it really is pretty much a neutral that goes with anything. (You couldn’t miss Pantone’s ‘Windsor Wine’ hue at the spring and summer runways shows at London Fashion Week).
Yep, the colour tends to have a moment in the spotlight every autumn and winter, but we’ve never been head over heels in love with the hue like we are now, collectively. When it’s not staring at us in the form of videos on the For You Page, it’s on celebrities like Olivia Rodrigo.
Designer brands like Gucci, Miu Miu and Hermès are setting the tone (get it?) with every chic piece imaginable (ahem, tailored suiting), and it’s trickling down into the high street, too. Which means it is pretty easy to get in on the look yourself. Need further convincing? Doing so will likely elevate your overall aesthetic because the shade has an unavoidable luxe and polished finish.
And as we inch closer to party season, we're predicting the burgundy phenomenon will become completely inescapable – just watch. It looks *so* good in velvet and sequin versions, which are bound to show up at office parties and New Year's Eve gatherings all December long.
The best part about burgundy being absolutely everywhere, though? The fact that you can choose from so many different styles. Wear a pop of it in your accessories or go head-to-toe in a sumptuous monochrome look. To make it easy for you to get on board, we've rounded up our favourite burgundy delights to shop now.
