To me, Christmas has always looked far more romantic and shiny on-screen - there's snow, whimsical love stories, along with a handful of memorable outfits. And while I've yet to swap homes with a successful movie trailer editor and fall madly in love, like Kate Winslet in The Holiday, I have often thought about Cameron Diaz's all-cream attire. In the fictional world of romance and festive cheer, winter's all about beautiful gowns, cosy coats and monochromatic outfits. So, in the bid to channel some of that Christmas movie magic, I've recreated the most iconic outfits from some of our favourite festive films - but with a modern edge.
1. Love Actually
Love Actually is without a doubt one of the best Christmas films, ticking all the boxes of a festive flick. The quintessential British rom-com feels like a warm hug every time you watch it with its heart-warming storylines and gentle humour. But one of my favourite things about the film is that it features some of the best noughties fashion. From Juliet's feather-trimmed wedding dress Keira Knightly to Mia's low-key workwear wardrobe, this movie is a great reference for winter styling. So, for an effortless festive outfit, I naturally had to recreate Natalie's red coat and white beret look.
2. Scrooged
What would Christmas be without Frank Cross and The Ghost of Christmas present?! The '80s classic, Scrooged, had to be included in this list of festive films, especially for this memorable Carol Kane look. A retro fairy costume might not sound very Christmas-y, but it's an iconic look nonetheless. To recreate it, I opted for a fun piece from Selkie. The silhouette keeps it fun and flirty, with much-needed room for food and Christmas fun, while the colour and fabric feel incredible.
3. The Holiday
Cameron Diaz in The Holiday is the epitome of chic. Her monochromatic outfits and countryside love story often have me dreaming of a Christmas spent in a cottage. Sadly, I'm no closer to Rosehill Cottage, but I certainly wanted to recreate one of her looks. Despite not finding the exact pieces she wears in the film, I opted for a brown scarf, a cream ribbed dress from ASOS and a Coach bag. Whether you decide to style this outfit with a pair of Ugg boots or brown suede over-the-knee boots, this outfit can take you from a pub lunch to a Christmas market and even Winter Wonderland. Thanks for the inspo Diaz!
4. Home Alone
There's nothing like the chaos and fun of Home Alone, and while Kate McCallister's parenting might be up for questioning, her style definitely gets a thumbs up from me. Mrs McCallister, played by Catherine O’Hara, is always seen in classic tailored pieces, from oversized blazers to rich camel coats, her style is chiiiic. Inspired by the phone call scene, I recreated her look with toffee-hued outerwear from ASOS, a buttoned-up white shirt and River Island wide-leg trousers. Whether I've mastered her look to a tee is another question, but this look definitely feels like something I could wear all year round.
5. Last Holiday
This film may just be my absolute favourite Queen Latifah film. The romantic comedy sees a lonely, unappreciated woman become the true belle of the ball. While many might class this film as more of a Thanksgiving than a Christmas movie, it's one I watch during the festive season, so it gets an inclusion. Plus, this outfit is such a Christmas moment. I styled this gorgeous off-the-shoulder Yaura dress with minimalist jewellery to create a magical look.
