When the blockbuster series, Bridgerton hit our screens last year, the uprising of cottage-core romanticism and Regency-core style sent shockwaves through the fashion industry, resulting in the return of the corset.
Now, over a year later, the romance of the Regency style has taken a back seat while the corset continues to reign supreme. From red carpet looks to models' off-duty street style, it feels like there's no stopping this trend.
So, if, like me, you want to hop on this trendy train to style royalty but aren't sure where to start, here's how you can incorporate corsets into your wardrobe. Because curvy and busty girls deserve to look fabulous too.
1. Corset vest top
Sometimes the best option is the option that feels less daunting, and what could possibly go wrong with a vest? The answer is nothing. Styled like the ultimate summer sorbet, I've paired this New Look vest with a pair of funky jeans that could persuade Mother Nature to cancel autumn. This look very much feels like a summery look due to the colours, but the very basis of this look can undoubtedly carry you into autumn. By switching the chunky sandals with a pair of boots and layering a blazer over the vest, you've taken this look from summer sweetness to fall fashionista.
This is an excellent way to dip your toe in the corset pool, especially as a busty babe. There's no need to worry about a potential nip slip or boob slippage as the vest provides all the coverage one may want while the corset design flaunts your gorgeous figure. An excellent start.
2. Corset dress
When I think of corset dresses, I often envision a figure-hugging bodycon dress that doesn't go up to my size (hi, fashion industry, we'd like those kinds of dresses too!) So, when I came across this dress from ASOS, I was both surprised and elated. As partywear season edges closer and closer, a dress like this one is the ultimate showstopper. And if it wasn't clear already, the chances of me wearing anything beige or black this season are extremely low.
Whether you're busty like me or have a smaller chest, this corset will sit nicely, cinching and drawing attention to your waist, while the mini skirt adds drama and extra shape. Be prepared to turn heads.
3. Monochromatic corset co-ord
Nothing brings me joy like a monochrome outfit, it's like a fail-safe way of dressing. A black top is never going to look bad with a black pair of trousers and that is exactly the same for this corset paired with (almost) matching trousers. So, why not give this a go?
Whether your corset is magenta like mine or even white, a monochromatic look is a gorgeous way to elevate your outfit. And if you don't believe me, look at Bella Hadid's runway look from the A/W 2022 Versace show. While my outfit doesn't come remotely close to the fabulousness of Bella in Versace, it definitely makes for a strong argument in favour of monochrome.
4. Printed corset set
When it comes to partywear season, a bold statement piece is must. So instead of opting for a nice blouse or sequin piece, why not wow the crowd in a statement corset like this one from ASOS? The joy of fashion is experimentation and coming up with looks that stray from the usual and instead draw in eyes.
What I love so much about this corset is the detail, from the off-the-shoulder puff sleeves that add a gorgeous dimension to the look, to the brown and gold zebra print that shifts away from the typical zebra print colourway. Whether worn with matching trousers or with a brown skirt, this is a great way to take on the trend.
5. Corset and mini skirt
I couldn't touch on this trend without honouring the UK It-girls like Jameela Joie, Mikai McDermott and Leomie Anderson, who continue to stun in their corsets and skirts at every chance they get, and inspire me to do the same. While the mini skirt trend hasn't always felt very body inclusive, the days of worrying about confirming the archaic fashion rules that curvy bodies shouldn't wear or follow certain trends are behind us.
While this option of styling isn't the most fall-friendly, I think this makes for a great 'going out out' outfit. And if showing off your bare legs feels unappealing, try pairing your mini skirt with a pair of tights or even better (depending on the style of the skirt) over-the-knee boots. I've opted for a colourful look, but there's a plethora of autumn-toned skirts and corsets that could work for you.
Ultimately, this trend is about experimenting, having fun with your clothes and using them as a form of expression. Fashion doesn't have to be serious and shouldn't be confined to particular narratives about what you should or shouldn't do with your body. Step outside of your comfort zone this season and enjoy the thrills that a new season brings.
