1Rihanna - 2005
Getty ImagesAn adorably fresh-faced RiRi was just 17 here, SEVENTEEN. While the rest of us were still in school, watching Hollyoaks and counting down the days to no longer needing a fake id, Ri was sailing on the success of 'Pon De Replay' and attending the VMAs.
We have so much noughties going on here: The hoops, crop top, belly chain and low-slung white jeans. Classic.
2Miley Cyrus - 2008
Getty ImagesNaturally, when thinking of Miley and VMAs, an image of a nude latex two-piece, double high bun, her ever protruding tongue and twerking upon a Beetlejuice suit-clad Robin Thicke come to mind. But it wasn't always that way.
Back in her Hannah Montana heyday, Miley's long auburn hair fell down the shoulders of a very modest dress complete with a noughties chunky waist belt back in 2008.

3Kim Kardashian West - 2011
Getty ImagesPre-Kanye Kim was a lot more bling than high fashion. This low-cut, metallic, floor-length gown with a sheer back and matching cuff is very true to form.
Beauty-wise, take note of the very smokey eye and lack of contouring, proving that, just like every other style icon, she's certainly had a fashion journey.
4Britney Spears - 1999
Getty ImagesBritney is another superstar who has a very coloured VMA history. Do we even have to remind you of the Madonna snog and performing 'Slave 4 U' with an actual living python draped around her neck?
But at her first VMAs, Britney represented like the true nineties pop princess she is. Wearing metallic errything (including eyeshadow), she even made sure to add in a choker for good measure.

5Taylor Swift - 2008
Getty ImagesThis is so early years-innocent-country girl Tay that its almost too much.
In 2008, Swift burst onto the scene with her long, blonde ringlets, neutral ballerina skirt, open-toed low-heeled sandals and long pendant necklace. Combine all this with a guitar and we wouldn't have it any other way.
6Kanye West - 2004
Getty ImagesIt's very interesting to take a look back at Kanye's wardrobe given he has since become a respected New York Fashion Week designer.
In 2004, the year he released his incredible College Dropout album, Kanye chose to wear top-to-toe baby pink to the VMAs. Here for it.
Never fear, true to his hip hop legend status, there is a glimpse of rap bling under the very wide collar. The aviator sunglasses are also peak 2004 Yeezy.

7Jennifer Lopez - 1998
Getty ImagesThe widely held belief that J.Lo simply does not age is further proven by this photo of her attending her first VMAS in 1998 - when she was 29.
We are here for the all-white getup, hat included, and reckon she was probably taking style tips from her boyfriend at the time: Puff Daddy.
8Beyoncé - 2000
Getty ImagesBefore Beyoncé ran the world all on her own, she did it with Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams as part of Destiny's Child. In 1999, they won their first VMA and accepted in studded leather outfits.
Bey wore a bardot-style long leather dress, Kelly in leather hot pants and knee-high boots and Michelle in leather trousers. All is right with the world.

9Chrissy Teigen - 2015
Getty ImagesOk, so Chrissy definitely benefits from only having attended her first VMAs more recently therefore avoiding some questionable outfit choices which her fellow celebs have had to endure.
Chrissy makes the list for looking so damn chic and for braving and pulling off the definitely-not-wearing-any-underwear vibe.
10One Direction - 2012
Getty ImagesIn 2012, One Direction flew stateside to join the big-timers at the VMAs. Harry Styles was in his pre-floral shirt days and dressed up in a waistcoat while sporting his trademark curly locks. Louis, Zayn, Niall and Liam all sported some variation of the instantly recognisable 2012 french crop for the occasion.
I wonder what they'll wear this year... Oh, wait :(

11Ariana Grande - 2013
Getty ImagesAriana looks absolutely adorable and essentially like she's on her way to prom at her first VMA red carpet appearance in 2013.
A far cry from the high pony, bunny ears and knee high boots we now love her for, the singer kept it cute in a floral mini dress and pointed stilettos.
Side note: Shoutout to the side fringe which many of us were definitely still rocking in 2013.
12Drake - 2010
Getty ImagesWhile Drake is now very much a male style icon, in 2010 the Canadian rapper wore an oversized white blazer buttoned up once at the front.
His shoes are also looking so shiny, they're bordering on velvet. We're hoping it's just the lighting.
