A carefully considered capsule wardrobe is *the* ultimate styling hack behind some of the world’s best-dressed women, and I’m going to show you exactly how to build one for yourself. As a shopping editor, I’ve learned a few things about personal style from interviewing celebrities like Zendaya and Tyla, reporting on fashion news and trends season after season, and providing advice on dressing for life’s biggest moments – weddings, date nights, black tie events, plus the ultimate workwear and holiday edits.
How to build a capsule wardrobe
“Capsule” alludes to something small and contained, so your capsule wardrobe is your shortlist of sartorial building blocks. Think the timeless staples – the perfect jean, a classic trench, a button-up shirt – that create the foundation for any occasion imaginable and can be mixed and matched to make endless outfit combinations. When we say capsule, that doesn't mean minimal, so feel free to inject your personal style by using these 10 must-haves as a canvas to customise your look.
Timeless jeans
Undoubtedly one of the hardest working pieces in any wardrobe, a well-fitting pair of jeans will take you from work to the weekend and beyond. Whether you prefer a ‘90s straight-leg, ultra-comfy baggy jeans, or a chic wide-leg fit, you can’t go wrong with classic denim. My personal faves? Paige’s Sasha wide-leg jeans, Citizens of Humanity Ayla baggy jeans, and Agolde’s ‘90s straight leg jeans.
Staple knits
When investing in quality knitwear, first look at what a garment is made of. As a fashion editor, I always choose cotton, linen, wool or cashmere even though the latter materials can be on the spennier side.
A transitional jacket
Warmer days call for a refresh to your outerwear rotation, and this season we’re reaching for perennially cool spring jackets. For those who prefer minimal tailoring, consider an oversized blazer. If you own a pair of biker boots, try pairing with a sleek leather jacket, while a bomber jacket is ideal for styling with a maxi skirt or denim.
Foundational footwear
No matter how you classify your personal style, there are three pairs of shoes that everyone needs: a comfy pair of sandals for your next holiday; simple ballet flats that can be seamlessly styled for the office, uni, or off-duty; and leather heels (whether kitten or stiletto) that will come in handy for a night out.
The LBD
Whether you prefer a little or long black dress, the LBD is the answer to every occasionwear question. Heading to a black-tie event? Try a simple maxi with statement jewels. Have a date coming up? Slip into a slinky, black mini with sky-high pumps. What about a funeral? You'll want a modest black midi finished with an understated clutch bag.
Signature jewellery
As a fashion editor, I’ve built up a curated collection of pieces from the best, affordable jewellery brands around. But even though I’m spoilt for choice, I never feel fully dressed without my go-to Pandora baroque pearl earrings, Laura Vann necklace and Mejuri ring stack. As for special occasions, I love a pair of statement earrings from Bonvo or Orelia, and By Alona’s beaded necklaces are a must-have on holidays.
A crisp shirt
From your first interview to an important meeting, a crisp button-up shirt is essential to your arsenal of workwear. While a white, cotton style is a great starting point paired with grey trousers, we love the look of a blue pinstripe number worn with a camel-brown maxi skirt. If you’re heading on holiday, try a roomy, linen style as a chic beach cover-up that’s perfect for hot weather.
Tailored trousers
All hail the office siren! All jokes aside, tailored trousers are a sartorial weapon when you want to look elegant and put-together in a pinch. I have a pair of grey, wide-leg trousers from COS that make me feel so effortlessly cool when styled with a button-up shirt or a slouchy, white t-shirt.
The classic trench
There’s no denying that a trench coat is spring style royalty. And though I love the versatility of a light-brown hue, you might be caught in a homogenous sea of beige when commuting across the city. So, don’t be afraid to venture beyond the norm and go for a chocolate-brown or khaki green trench instead – or try a leather or denim style.
Holdall handbag
With the space to fit your laptop, water bottle, lunch, and beauty essentials, a ludicrously capacious handbag is a non-negotiable for every girlie who loves her stuff. Our pick? A leather tote, of course. A second-hand designer tote from eBay is my go-to work bag, which I alternate with a cherry-red Sézane shopper for a pop of colour. As for a weekend away, a slouchy, oversized bag is a must-have for all your beach day necessities.
