Oscar-winning actor Brie Larson has opened up about landing her dream role of playing Princess Rosalina in the new The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, revealing it’s been an emotional, full-circle moment.
Ahead of the movie’s release in cinemas today (1 April), Larson, spoke with Cosmopolitan UK in an exclusive, one-off edition of CosmoGirl about what it was like stepping into the role.
Brie recounted happy memories of playing video games like Super Mario Galaxy with her younger sister Milaine on their Nintendo, during their childhood growing up in Sacramento, California.
“I’ve always loved video games. Some people assume they’re only for a certain type of person but I denounce that idea… It’s art, it’s for everybody,” she said.
Brie, 36, added that if her 10-year-old self knew she would one day get to voice this role, “She would just cry… a lot.”
“If I think back to [that time], I desperately wanted to be an actor, and everybody was telling me no… If I knew there was relief in the future and that I would get to live the life that I always dreamed of, I don’t think there would be any words, just tears,” she said.
Brie has enjoyed an impressive career, including her role playing Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She also won the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in 2015 film Room.
Despite doing voice acting previously, Brie admitted the role still brought some unique challenges. “You get into these conundrums, where the director goes, ‘Okay, well this is Princess Rosalina hugging someone,’ and you’re like, ‘Oh, how does that affect your voice?’”
Just like fans, the Captain Marvel star is excited for the world to finally meet her character, who is described as “an otherworldly, strong, motherly cosmic force.”
In Brie’s words, Princess Rosalina “is not fully definable, because she’s everything. She’s all of the things that I think are good and true in the world.
“Whether you know the world or not, the film has such a beautiful message.”
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is in cinemas across the UK and Ireland now.
