Tonight saw the long-awaited return of Grace on ITV for its sixth season. The new season, based on Peter James' novels about Detective Roy Grace, sees Grace (John Simm) and Branson (Richie Campbell) continue to solve a series of crimes in Brighton, but this time they also have to deal with the fallout of the Cassian case from series five.

The premiere episode of the new season saw the pair investigate the disappearance of a woman called Eden (Tamla Kari), after her husband Neel (Rishi Nair) reported her missing. The case developed and after some initial plot twists, they realised they were dealing with a murder case.

However, by the end of the episode it turned out Eden wasn't missing at all, but had in fact fake her death. And there were actually lots of clues at the beginning of the episode we missed that revealed Eden had planned this all along.

What happened to Eden?

Near the end of the episode Grace and Branson believe they have enough evidence to suggest Neel had killed and then disposed of Eden's body.

They found out about the abusive nature of Neel, including the mysterious circumstances of his first wife's death, and came to the conclusion Neel had killed Eden in a fit of rage. They found a burnt passport, her bloody dress and a dug out grave that all suggested Neel had killed his wife.

However, when no body was ever found, the team began to get suspicious and then realised Eden had set up her own death in order to escape from the violence of Neel, with the help of her friend Rebecca (Hannah McClean) and Neel's son. It also then became clear Eden had developed a relationship with Neel's brother Devan (Gurjeet Singh) and is pregnant with their child.

Eden and Devan attempt to make an escape on a boat out of Brighton, but Neel catches up with them and attacks Devan. Just as it looks Devan is about to die, Eden hits Neel over the head with a boat hook and he falls off the boat.

All the clues we missed Eden was alive the whole time

By the time Grace and Branson found out Eden had been faking her death the whole time, it really did seem to be starring us right in the face and here are all the clues we missed that gave it away early on.

Her conversation with Rebecca at the start of the episode

Our first introduction to Eden was her conversation with Rebecca at the party, where Rebecca asks how she's doing and there seems to be a knowing look between the pair. We now know this was because the pair were getting ready to put their escape plan into action...

Eden and Neel's fight at the party

Which brings us to the first step in their plan. Knowing of Neel's abusive behaviour Eden planned to get into a public fight with Neel at the party so there would be witnesses to his actions and start to plant seeds of suspicion that Neel could be behind his wife's death.

All the suggestions she was pregnant

Eden being pregnant is a massive motivator in her wanting to escape Neel and be with Devan. And we should have suspected she was pregnant when she was sipping on orange juice while the rest of the guests had champagne. There was also the clue of her constantly clutching at her stomach while in the bathroom.

Rebecca calling Eden

We get to see Rebecca call Eden at 11 o'clock at night, now of course you can call your friends late at night, but it does seem a bit suspicious that she was calling her right before bed. It's almost as if she was checking in on their plan...

Rebecca turning up and convincing Neel it was his fault

After drugging Neel, digging the crave and planting the other evidence the pair's final stop in the plan was to convince Neel he didn't remember what happened.

However, the way they did it was actually pretty obvious now we look back at it. Rebecca turns up out of the blue on her way into work to check in on Eden as she's received a "suspicious" voice note from her friend, but she's nowhere to be found. Instead Rebecca asks Neel leading questions and statements that get him to start questioning what happened. This now in hindsight is so obvious the pair were behind the fake death.
