If you’ve been hooked on ITV’s Gone (and are skipping ahead on ITVX), then prepare for a series finale full of twists, airing tonight!
While everyone else is circling Michael as the obvious suspect, Annie remains convinced something doesn’t quite add up.
We watch as she untangles more evidence to find out if Michael truly did kill his wife Sarah Polly…
Be warned, there are spoilers ahead.
Episode 6 explained
After a mysterious note appears to point the finger directly at Sarah’s husband, Michael, the tension ramps up, the accusations start flying, and it feels like the case is all but solved.
For most of the investigation, suspicion falls on Michael, Stephen and even Dylan. But the real danger was someone hiding in plain sight the entire time.
Annie realises the truth after spotting that the keys found near Sarah’s body belong to Rory. In a shocking twist, they work to open Rory’s house, and Annie sneaks in to look for evidence — only for him to unexpectedly return.
Instead of confronting him outright, Annie calmly draws him into conversation, allowing him to reveal what really happened.
Rory’s emotions surface, and he begins to reveal more about their past.
He tried to kiss Sarah once, he explains. They had been friends for years, and Sarah had even defended him at work after complaints about his inappropriate behaviour toward female colleagues.
“She was very important to you,” Annie gently acknowledges.
Annie carefully coaxes him into revealing more and the truth begins to unravel…
So, who killed Sarah Polly?
The killer in Gone is revealed to be Rory Bowman, the deputy head of St Bartholomew’s.
Annie cleverly pushes him to admit guilt, by suggesting it sounded like “an accident”.
But the reality is much darker.
Rory’s carefully constructed story begins to disintegrate when Sarah’s affair with Stephen comes to light. Furious about the potential scandal for the school — and nursing a bruised ego after Sarah never returned his feelings — Rory confronts her and demands she end the relationship.
When he later discovers she didn’t, the pair argue. According to Rory, Sarah “wouldn’t stop shouting”, and close-ups of his hands in a strangling gesture confirm the truth: Rory’s jealousy and wounded pride ultimately drove him to kill Sarah.
What happens next?
The conclusion to the case finally gives Annie the clarity she needs to cut ties with Craig, who had been creeping back into her life.
But she’s far from finished with the past. Craig leaves Annie with a file on the unsolved Tina Bradley case — the disappearance of Annie’s friend that has haunted her for years.
The case may be closed for Sarah Polly. But Annie Cassidy’s story is far from over.
Does this mean we’re on for season 2? We’re keeping our fingers crossed it happens.
