Channel 4’s epic rags-to-riches saga, A Woman of Substance, once again airs on our screens tonight.

This camp period drama is based on a best-selling 1970s novel, and follows Emma Harte on her journey from penniless maid to jet-set business woman (the girl boss is back!)

While the source material (and the 1980s TV show, which was the first time the novel was adapted, and a clear reference point) are brilliant, the show really shines thanks to its stellar cast.

Heading up the show is Brenda Blethyn (who plays an older Emma Harte) of Vera fame, alongside an ensemble of familiar faces from the likes of House of Guinness and Peaky Blinders who bring all the Harte family's scheming and backstabbing to life.

So, here’s your guide to the main characters and the actors playing them.

Which characters are missing from the original 80s series?

FYI: A Woman of Substance is adapted from Barbara Taylor Bradford’s 1979 novel of the same name, which is the first in a seven-book series about three generations of a retail empire.

The show was first turned into a TV show back in 1985, and starred Jenny Seagrove and Deborah Kerr as the younger and older versions of Emma Harte.

The 2026 Channel 4 adaptation of A Woman of Substance significantly streamlines the large ensemble cast seen in the 1985 series, keeping the core figures such as Emma Harte (played by Brenda Blethyn and Jessica Reynolds) and the Fairley family while removing or reshaping many supporting roles.

The most notable change is the absence of "Blackie" O’Neill – played by none other than Liam Neeson – who serves as Emma’s closest confidant, protector, and ally in the original. In the new version, his role has been loosely reworked into a smaller character (“Mac”).

Other characters from the 1985 adaptation, including Laura O’Neill, Joe Lowther, and Arthur Ainsley, have been removed entirely – along with whole subplots such as the Kallinski family storyline, who help Emma with her entry into business.

Laura O’Neill (also known as Laura Spencer) is romantically tied to Blackie, while Joe Lowther and Arthur Ainsley are tied to Emma’s early struggles and working-class roots, in the 1985 version.

Other Harte family figures, such as Winston Harte, and additional extended family members have also been omitted from the new series.

A Woman of Substance airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 9pm on Channel 4.
