Killing Eve set the standard when it came to cat-and-mouse thrillers, thanks to the undeniably chemistry between Sandra Oh's Eve Polastri and Jodie Comer's Villanelle. Oh, it was so good! Thankfully, there are many good replacements to binge-watch this weekend, if you're looking for a TV series of a similar calibre.
In haunting legal thriller The Killing Kind, a stalker reenters his victim's life, while The Day is an outstanding bank heist drama. Meanwhile, what could be better than Eddie Redymayne's portrayal in The Day of the Jackal, in which he stars opposite Lashana Lynch. So, get yourself settled, because these are the 10 underrated cat-and-mouse thrillers to watch now on ITV, Netflix, the BBC and more.
We Hunt Together
It's fair to say Eve Myles knows what she's doing when it comes to dramas. Enter We Hunt Together, a detective show which has flown under the radar. In the nail-biting series, Eve plays DSI Lola Franks who, along with her partner, DI Jackson Mendy (Babou Ceesay), get stuck in a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse with psychopathic serial killers on the run. The result is a crime drama that "provides echoes of early Hitchcock or Tony Scott’s True Romance", according to former UKTV executive, Philippa Collie Cousins.
We Hunt Together is available to watch on NOW.
Spy/Master
Spy/Master covers one dramatic week in the life of fictional character Victor Godeanu (Alec Secăreanu), the right-hand man to Romanian President, Nicolae Ceaușescu (Claudiu Bleonț). But it’s not Victor’s day job (so to speak) that’s caused his week from hell - he's actually a secret agen for the Soviets, and his double life is about to be revealed to the Romanian government. So, Victor makes the decision to deflect to the US - he just has the not-so-small matter of eluding the KGB and his country’s own spooks to get there.
Spy/Master is available to watch now on BBC iPlayer.
The Killing Kind
Fans of Killing Eve seriously need to make time for the Killing Kind. The show follows high-flying defence barrister, Ingrid Lewis (Emma Appleton), and her client, John Webster (Colin Webster), who was accused of stalking his ex-girlfriend and won his case. However in a twist of fate, John then becomes more than just Ingrid’s client, before their relationship ends badly. Only, er, John isn't interested in letting her move on - and we all know where this might end.
The Killing Kind is available to watch now on ITVX.
The Madness
If you didn't watch The Madness when it first landed on Netflix last year, it's the perfect weekend binge-watch. The story revolves around TV pundit Muncie Daniels (playedd by the incredible Colman Domingo), who's framed for the murder of a white supremacist while on a work sabbatical in the Pocono Mountains. In a desperate fight to clear his name, he's forced to flee the authorities, and must race against the clock to unravel a global conspiracy he’s unwittingly found himself at the centre of. Sounds good, right?
The Madness is available to watch now on Netflix.
Poker Face
Orange Is The New Black favourite Natasha Lyonne plays Charlie Cale, a drifter who’s perpetually on the run across the US. Only, she doesn't make life easy for herself on the road, due to her extraordinary ability to tell if someone’s lying – a skill she doesn’t exactly keep concealed. Indeed, rather than laying low, Charlie uses her talent to help a cast of colourful characters solve a string of equally colourful crimes. If you aren’t already sold, Poker Face has a brilliant array of guest stars, including Katie Holmes and Adrien Brody, and it’s worth watching for their performances alone!
Poker Face is available to watch now on NOW.
Suspicion
Yep, the Uma Thurman in a cat-and-mouse thriller, where she plays an American media mogul, Katherine Newman, whose son is kidnapped from a New York hotel. Suspicion quickly falls on four British citizens, who were in the hotel on the night in question. The cat-and-mouse drama takes them trans-Atlantic to evade the combined forces of the National Crime Agency and the FBI to prove their innocence, but it quickly becomes apparent that not everyone can be relied upon to be truthful... Classic!
Suspicion is available watch now on ITVX.
Beef
This is probably one of the best shows on Netflix right now. In season one, all the action in Beef kicks off after a minor road rage incident between two strangers, entrepreneur, Amy Lau (Ali Wong), and struggling contractor, Danny Cho (Steven Yeun).
While most people might forget about it after the next traffic light, Amy and Danny don't, and instead, they enter into an ongoing feud that escalates to such a dangerous extent that both their lives and relationships begin to unravel. If you’re looking for a truly unique series that’s impossible to predict, Beef is the thriller for you. And the good news is, a season two is on its way!
Beef is available to watch now on Netflix.
Irvine Welsh’s Crime
Irvine Welsh is best-known for Trainspotting, but Crime, his first TV drama, isn't one to be missed. The series follows Detective Ray Lennox (Dougray Scott) who’s investigating the murder of a young girl by a serial killer known as Mr Confectioner. Initially, it seems that the murderer holds all the cards, due to some personal struggles the detective is going through, but can he flip the table and take control? It takes a dive to a seriously dark place before he can find out.
Irvine Welsh’s Crime is available to watch now on ITVX.
The Day of the Jackal
If you haven't watched Eddie Redmayne and Lashana Lynch in The Day of the Jackal yet, what are you doing?! The 10-part series follows a ruthless and experienced assassin The Jackal (Eddie Redmayne), who’ll kill anyone for the right fee. But tenacious MI6 agent, Bianca Pullman (Lashana Lynch) is onto him, and makes it her mission to capture him. How will she fare? Who will come out on top of this intense game of cat-and-mouse?
The Day of the Jackal is available to watch now on NOW.
The Americans
Ok, so this has been out for more than a decade, but don't let that put you off. It truly is a classic, and stands up to any new show. The cat-and-mouse thriller follows Philip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth Jennings (Keri Russell), who seem like any other married couple living in suburban Washington DC.
Only, in true Mr and Mrs Smith style, they're actually two KGB spies in an arranged marriage, who are posing as ordinary Americans. Only, er, maintaining their cover is no mean feat, and they struggle to cover up their secret missions, particularly as there are threats left, right and centre.
The Americans is available to watch now on Disney+.
