Contains spoilers for Fallout season 2
After eight episodes of control chips, leadership struggles and family reunions, Fallout season two aired its final episode today (4 February) in the UK, and now we've been left with a ton of questions that need to be answered.
Thankfully a third season of the video game adaptation has already been confirmed by Prime Video, and so we hopefully won't have to wait too long to find out what happens when the Ghoul (Walton Goggins) travels to Colorado.
So when is the third season going to come out? And what else is there to know about it? Here's everything we know so far, including Ella Purnell's (who plays Lucy MacLean) predictions for potential plots.
When was Fallout season 3 confirmed?
Prior to the release of Fallout season two in December 2025, Prime Video confirmed the show would be getting a third season back in May 2025.
The news was announced during a Prime Video presentation, with Vernon Sanders, the global head of television at Amazon MGM Studios sharing the exciting news.
He said: "Jonah [Nolan], Lisa [Joy], Geneva [Robertson-Dworet], and Graham [Wagner] have done an exceptional job bringing this beloved video game franchise to vivid life on Prime Video. Together with our amazing partners at Bethesda Games and Bethesda Softworks, we are delighted to announce a third season of Fallout, well ahead of the much-anticipated debut of season two.”
What will happen in Fallout season 3?
So far the majority of the plot has been kept under wraps by Prime Video. However, we can guess a lot of what could happen based on how season two finished.
The Ghoul seems set to go on another road trip, this time to Colorado. The series ended with him discovering the cryogenic chambers of his daughter Jenny and his wife Barb were empty. Hidden in the chambers was a postcard with Colorado, with a message written on the back: "Colorado was a good idea." If you recall Colorado was brought up in a flashback with Cooper suggesting it was a good idea to his family to move away to. So it seems likely the next season will follow The Ghoul making his way to potentially find his family after so many years.
Elsewhere Lucy and Maximus have remained in Vegas, where it seems war is inevitable. But will the pair decide to stay or leave? Ella Purnell, who plays the role of Lucy MacLean opened up about what she thinks could happen to Lucy during her Cosmopolitan UK cover interview in December.
Ahead of the second season's release, Ella pondered on what the future held for her character, saying: "What does she do next? Who is she going to be? Is she going to go back to the Vault? Is she going to lead a revolution? Is she going to get shot? Is she going to survive? Is she going to just shack up somewhere in the Wasteland and cut hair for a living? I don't know. I don't know what they've got in store, but I do know that with all she's seen, all she's learned, she will not be the same Lucy." We're curious to see what she does!
There's also the Forced Evolutionary Virus to contend with, and Steph telling the Enclave to "initiate phase two". Um, what does that mean?
Who from the cast will return for Fallout season 3?
Ok so technically the cast for Fallout season three has not been confirmed yet, however, we would be very surprised if the following do not reprise their roles:
- Ella Purnell as Lucy MacLean
- Walton Goggins as The Ghoul/Cooper Howard
- Aaron Moten as Maximus
- Kyle MacLachlan as Hank MacLean
- Moisés Arias as Norm MacLean
- Frances Turner as Barb Howard
- Justin Theroux as Mr House
- Johnny Pemberton as Thaddeus
- Annabel O'Hagan as Steph
One person who won't be coming back is Kumail Nanjiani, who played Paladin Xander Harkness, as his character died after just two episodes.
When is Fallout season 3 set to be released?
As of yet, Prime Video has not confirmed the official release date of the new season.
Filming has not yet begun and is expected to take place at some point during this summer. Executive producer Jonathan Nolan told IGN back in 2025, "With regards to production, we're hoping to be shooting again next summer. We'll see if that all comes together — best laid plans and all."
The filming for season two began in November 2024 and then concluded by May 2025, before being released in December 2025.
If the third season is to follow a similar timeline of around a year, then we could be looking at a release at some point in the summer of 2027.
