The Night Manager is back after almost a decade away, with Jonathan Pine (Tom Hiddleston) stepping into dangerous new territory.
Nine years have passed since Pine outmanoeuvred arms dealer Richard Roper in Egypt, delivering him into the hands of Syrian captors. Now Roper is dead, Pine is living under a new identity as MI6 operative Alex Goodwin, and his hard-won sense of safety is about to unravel when a familiar face from Roper’s former mercenaries appears in London.
With nearly 10 years separating us from the show’s explosive first run - and plenty of high-stakes twists, betrayals and double-crosses to remember - it’s the perfect moment to look back. So, before the story picks up again, here’s a full recap of The Night Manager season one to refresh your memory.
What happened in the Night Manager season one?
The series kicked off like a sleek spy thriller, following Jonathan Pine, the night manager of a five-star hotel in Cairo. A former British soldier with a mysterious past, Pine kept his history under wraps.
While at the hotel, he crossed paths with arms dealer Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie), a charming but ruthless villain dubbed "the worst man in the world," who profited from chaos and war. Hot on Roper’s trail was Angela Burr (Olivia Colman), a relentless Foreign Office investigator who recruited Pine to infiltrate his inner circle - an offer he took without hesitation.
Pine’s motivation was personal. He’d grown close to Sophie Alekan, girlfriend of Roper’s brutal associate Freddie Hamid. When Pine discovered Freddie’s violence, Sophie begged for help, but Freddie killed her, leaving Pine determined to take down Roper and his network.
Four years later, Pine was working as a night manager in Switzerland - until, surprise, Roper checked into his hotel. Pine seized the opportunity for revenge, sneaking into Roper’s room and handing stolen SIM cards over to Burr.
As he embedded himself deeper into Roper’s world under Operation Limpet, Pine was given a fake criminal past and saw a staged kidnapping of Roper’s girlfriend Jed (Elizabeth Debicki) and son, cementing his place in the inner circle. Everyone trusted him, except Roper’s right-hand man Corky Corcoran, who was suspicious from the start and warned Pine he’d exact brutal revenge if he was deceived.
To keep Corky off his back, Pine used his drinking problem to discredit him. With intel from Roper’s young son Danny, he snuck into Roper’s office to photograph Tradepass documents - the front company selling weapons under the guise of agricultural equipment. Eventually, Corky was sidelined, and Pine assumed the role of Tradepass frontman under the alias Andrew Burch, gaining full access to Roper’s operations.
Meanwhile, Pine fell for Jed, and the two shared a steamy romance while Roper remained distracted. Back at MI6, Burr uncovered two shady weapons deals, codenamed Halo and Felix, only to discover that Halo was senior MI6 official Geoffrey Dromgoole and Felix was CIA station chief Barbara Vandom, both falsifying documents to cover Roper’s deals.
When Roper learned of the leaks, he had his lawyer Apo killed and warned Pine that he still didn’t trust someone in his circle. The stakes escalated on a trip to the Haven, Roper’s Syrian "kingdom," where Pine was tasked with organising a weapons demo. Remote-controlled warplanes bombed villages, and Roper killed a local father and son - something Pine tried to stop, with Jed witnessing the horror. Corky nearly blew Pine’s cover, leading to a deadly confrontation.
Pine also tracked an "aid convoy" smuggling weapons. Burr then organised a US inspection, only to find agricultural equipment. Roper had duped them. Despite the setback, Roper and his entourage headed to Cairo to reconnect with Hamid.
The Night Manager season one ending explained
Burr followed Roper and his team to Cairo, while Pine reassured her they still had a shot, even though the British government had shut down Operation Limpet.
With Jed’s help - though she was under Roper’s watch through Sandy’s wife - Pine managed to break into Roper’s safe and steal documents crucial to the arms deal.
Pine then made a bold move at a casino, drugging Hamid’s drinks and uncovering that Roper had ordered Sophie’s murder. He killed Hamid and left his body in the pool. In Cairo, Pine also called on his former hotel colleague Youssuf and his Muslim Brotherhood contacts to infiltrate the compound where Roper’s weapons were stored.
The next morning, Pine returned the stolen documents to Roper’s room via the breakfast trolley. But when Jed tried to enter the safe code, it had been changed - and Roper was standing behind her. He now knew Pine was the mole and tortured Jed until she revealed who else they were working with.
Roper and his team then headed to the weapons compound, where he tried to force Pine to complete the sale with Mr. Barghati. But Pine outsmarted him, detonating the weapons trucks remotely and destroying Tradepass’s business in one blow. Burr had already cut off MI6 support, leaving Roper trapped, powerless, and defeated.
Who was Sophie Alekan?
Sophie was the girlfriend of Freddie Hamid, a member of the wealthy and corrupt Hamid family that controlled much of Cairo. During a brief relationship with Pine, we learned her real name was Samira - and that she was also a spy.
She had stolen a detailed list of Hamid’s weapons, including napalm, chlorine gas, and sarin. Pine photocopied the documents and passed them to a diplomat friend, who helped smuggle them out of the country - a chain of events that ultimately led to Samira’s death, ordered by Roper.
Who was Richard Roper?
Roper was a charming but ruthless arms dealer, driven by money and power, with only his son Daniel as a weak spot. His inner circle included his loyal second-in-command Corky (Tom Hollander) and his fragile yet striking girlfriend Jed.
Season one ended with Roper’s empire collapsing around him. Burr and Joel Steadman (David Harewood) finally had enough evidence to arrest him for breaching Egyptian import laws and conspiracy to murder. As he was led away in handcuffs, a very angry Mr. Barghati appeared and took control of the police vehicle, with Angela saying: "He deserved it."
Did Corky die in the Night Manager season one?
He did. Corky, played by Tom Hollander, had been part of Roper’s inner circle before Pine arrived and was the only one who saw through Pine’s charm - a suspicion that ultimately cost him his life.
While in Syria, Corky caught Pine sneaking in from outside the camp and confronted him. The confrontation escalated into a fight, and Pine killed him, later claiming Corky had snuck out and might have betrayed them. Before that, Pine had persuaded Jed to frame Corky as the traitor, saying that Corky had seen her phone which contained photos of Roper’s private documents.
What was Operation Limpet?
Operation Limpet was the joint British-American plan to take down Richard Roper’s arms empire. At its centre was Jonathan Pine, who was tasked with infiltrating Roper’s inner circle under the careful guidance of Angela Burr.
What happened with Jonathan Pine and Jed?
Pine and Jed were finally free to be together by the end of season one. After a passionate night together, Pine saw Jed off at the airport as she headed to America to be with her son.
They then went their separate ways with a promise to see each other again...
The Night Manager season 2 starts on BBC One on Thursday 1st January at 9pm.
