The third of final season of The Newsreader will be back on our screens tonight (Thursday 11th September).
This time round we’re heading into the whirlwind of 1989. Helen and Dale are back, and they’re right in the thick of some of the biggest stories of the year - from the Exxon Valdez oil spill and the protests in Tiananmen Square, to the fight against Apartheid in South Africa and the fall of the Berlin Wall. It all starts on 17 March 1989, with a night at the Logie Awards, but things are about to get a whole lot more serious.

Anna Torv as Helen Norville
Who is Helen Norville? Helen is the first female newsreader on The News at Six. Breaking into the role during a deeply sexist era, she faces constant challenges, made tougher by her struggles with mental health. Her path to healing begins when she forms a complicated bond with rising reporter Dale.
What else has Anna Torv been in? Anna Torv is an Australian actress, best known for her role in Fringe. She's also appeared in The Last of Us and Mindhunter.
Sam Reid as Dale Jennings
Who is Dale Jennings? Dale is an ambitious junior reporter at The News at Six. Keen to make his mark, he becomes Helen’s producer and eventually, her partner. But as their relationship draws media attention, Dale starts to worry that his private life and hidden truths could be exposed.
What else has Sam Reid been in? Reid is known for Belle, '71, Anonymous and The Railway Man.
William McInnes as Lindsay Cunningham
Who is Lindsay Cunningham? Lindsay Cunningham is the tough, short-tempered boss of The News at Six, more focused on ratings than respect. His old-school views and blunt approach often put him at odds with the changing world around him.
What else has William McInnes been in? McInnes is known for Unfinished Sky, Blue Heelers, SeaChange, and Look Both Ways.
Marg Downey as Evelyn Walters
Who is Evelyn Walters? Evelyn Walters is the wife of Geoff Walters, who diligently manages his career off-screen - much to his annoyance. They have a daughter named Kay.
What else has Marg Downey been in? Downey is an Australian actress. She previously starred in Queen of Damned and Something Stupid.
Robert Taylor as Geoff Walters
Who is Geoff Walters? Geoff Walters is the veteran co-anchor of The News at Six. He's skeptical of Helen’s rise and sees it as a sign that serious journalism is being replaced by style and spectacle. Feeling increasingly sidelined as part of the old guard, Geoff clings to his role (even as his health declines), determined not to be pushed out.
What else has Robert Taylor been in? Taylor is best known for playing the lead role of Walt Longmire in the A&E/Netflix television series Longmire. His other credits include: Territory, Coffin Rock and Into the Ashes.
Stephen Peacocke as Rob Rickards
Who is Rob Rickards? Rob Rickards is a former VFL player turned sports editor. When he's bumped up to co-anchor, the pressure gets to him, but he leans on Noelene for support, and soon finds himself drawn to her, with the pair going on to get married.
What else has Stephen Peacocke been in? Peacocke's previous TV and film appearances include Hercules, Me Before You, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, and Danger Close.
Michelle Lim Davidson as Noelene Rickards
Who is Noelene Rickards? Noelene Rickards (nee Kim) is a dedicated library researcher and autocue operator at The News at Six, quietly determined to prove herself. Noelene juggles many tasks and is constantly overlooked. She is married to Rob.
What else has Michelle Lim Davidson been in? Davidson is also known for Born to Spy, Harrow and Goldstone.
Chum Ehelepola as Dennis Tibb
Who is Dennis Tibb? Dennis Tibb is the newsroom’s intense and sharp-tempered head producer, known for his precision and no-nonsense attitude.
What else has Chum Ehelepola been in? Ehelepola also plays Jagadish in the streaming series Nautilus.
Philippa Northeast as Kay Walters
Who is Kay Walters? Kay Walters is the trouble daughter of Geoff and Evelyn. She often turns to her father for support as tensions with her mother grow.
What else has Philippa Northeast been in? Northeast is an Australian actress best known for playing Evelyn MacGuire in Home and Away from 2013 until 2017. In 2019, she starred in Standing Up for Sunny with RJ Mitte.
Daniel Henshall as Bill McFarlane
Who is Bill McFarlane? McFarlane started out as Helen Norville’s producer at the Seven Network and later rised to co-executive producer on her show Public Eye. Though committed to the job, his unreturned feelings for Helen add tension to their working relationship, blurring the line between professional and personal.
What else has Daniel Henshall been in? Henshall previously starred in Mickey 17 alongside Robert Pattison, Snowtown and Okja.
