23 years after its original release Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later is finally getting a long-awaited sequel with 28 Years Later coming out in cinemas later this week. Forgotten the plot of the original? Well don't worry, as now the movie is available to stream completely free ahead of the sequel's release.
28 Years Later will land in cinemas from 20 June and stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes. The movie is set 28 years after the initial outbreak and shows a father and son who live on an isolated island who must venture into the outside world for a mission that ends up showing them the horror of the rest of the world caused by the virus.
Forgotten key details of the franchise? Well allow us to remind you. 28 Days Later came out in 2002, directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland. It starred Cillian Murphy as bicycle courier Jim who awakes from a coma only to discover a highly contagious virus has ravaged society, destroying much of Britain.
At the time the movie was highly praised for reinvigorating the zombie genre and for its filming which often saw the crew shoot in the early hours of the morning on usually incredibly packed London streets that they managed to make look deserted.
For years it's been impossible to find on streaming sites, however, now you can watch it totally for free on BBC iPlayer.
Yep, the film was shown on BBC One over the weekend and has since been uploaded to iPlayer, much to the delight of fans online, many of whom have been watching it for the first time. One person said on X: "Finally got around to watching 28 days later and WOW" and another said: "FINALLY giving this a go (I know, I know!) If you're looking to do a catch-up or re-watch, 28 Days Later is available to stream on BBC iPlayer."
In 2007, there was a sequel to the film called 28 Weeks Later, which Boyle was not a part of but starred Robert Carlyle, Rose Byrne, Jeremy Renner, Harold Perrineau, Catherine McCormack, Mackintosh Muggleton, Imogen Poots, and Idris Elba. The movie shows what happens when the American led NATO tries to establish a safe-zone from the virus in London, only for two siblings to accidentally reintroduce the virus.
28 Weeks Later is available to watch on Netflix. Sounds like it's time for movie marathon to us.
