**Contains spoilers on Netflix's Adolescence**
Stephen Graham's new drama Adolescence has become a runaway hit for Netflix after launching on the streaming platform on Thursday 13th March.
The four-part series, which follows Jamie Miller, a 13-year-old boy who is accused of murdering a girl at his school, has been called "TV perfection" by critics, while fans have praised newcomer Owen Cooper for his portrayal of Jamie.
While not based on one specific true story, the producers wanted to raise awareness following the rise of knife crime in recent years, with Graham explaining to Netflix: "One of our aims was to ask, 'What is happening to our young men these days, and what are the pressures they face from their peers, from the internet, and from social media?"
The show begins with one of the most devastating scenes as 13-year-old Jamie Miller is arrested for the murder of his schoolmate, Katie.
Throughout the case, Jamie maintains that he didn't do anything. However, his innocence is called into question once CCTV footage and images are revealed showing him in an altercation with Katie.
Despite this, there is a constant question around whether Jamie actually committed the crime he's being accused of, with one character even suggesting that the video could have been faked.
So did Jamie kill Katie in Adolescence?
Read on for everything we know, including the events that led to the devastating crime.
Adolescence ending explained
The entire story takes place over 13 months and comes to an end in the fourth and final episode when Jamie calls his dad on his birthday and reveals that he's changing his plea to guilty.
In the final scene, Eddie steps into Jamie's untouched room and breaks down in tears. He then apologises to Jamie's teddy bear (which acts as a symbolic stand-in for his son), and says: "I'm sorry son, I should've done better."
Did Jamie kill Katie in Adolescence?
Yes, Jamie did kill Katie. The truth behind Katie's murder is confirmed in the last 10 minutes of episode one when detective Luke Bascombe (Ashley Walters) plays a video of Jamie stabbing Katie seven times in a parking lot, after following her around.
The video is undeniable and the revelation leaves Jamie's father Eddie (Stephen Graham) horrified and unable to look at his son, as Jamie continues to deny his guilt.
"We wanted the audience to feel the same feelings that Eddie feels when he looks at it and realises what Jamie did," Graham revealed to Tudum.
Speaking about Jamie's character, Graham admitted that the audience is purposely made to believe that a 13-year-old boy like Jamie could never be capable of committing such a violent crime.
"That was down to the casting. We wanted the audience to be on Jamie’s side and think, 'Oh my God, this arrest is terrible. There’s no way he's done this.'"
In the opening scene, we see Jamie wet himself during the police raid, which was intentionally added to the script to emphasise that Jamie is still very much a child.
Jack Thorne and the creative team on Adolescence planned to reveal Katie's murderer by the end of the first episode, aiming to pose new questions rather than film the usual whodunnit style drama.
"Telling a drama that’s a why-done-it, rather than a whodunit, hopefully engages people in different questions," Thorne said while speaking to Tudum. "Questions like, 'What’s going on within our teenage boys?' Phil, Stephen, and I are looking at masculinity — thinking about ourselves as men, the kinds of fathers, partners, and friends we are, and questioning with some intensity who we are as people."
Despite it being revealed that Jamie did commit the crime from as early as episode one, we don't see him actually take accountability until the final episode when he calls his dad.
Speaking of this moment, Thorne added: "In episode four, he’s much further along on his journey than before. Jamie now knows what he’s done and what his future might be. That allows him to put his feelings in a box and close the lid on himself in some way."
Why did Jamie kill Katie in Adolescence?
There were a number of contributing factors including Jamie's "lack of self-esteem, perceived bullying at school, and access to online incel propaganda," according to Tudum.
In the third episode, Jamie tells Briony that he once asked Katie out after a topless photo of her was sent among classmates as an act of revenge porn. Jamie thought Katie might like to go out with him as she might have felt humiliated by the images that were shared, so her self esteem would have potentially been lower.
However, Katie rejected him and sent him emojis mocking him for even asking her out. She later publically called him an incel, which is a term associated with a mostly online community of people who define themselves as unable to find a romantic or sexual partner despite desiring one, and who may blame, objectify and denigrate women and girls as a result. Shortly after these comments, Jamie stabbed Katie.
What happened to Jamie's family in Adolescence?
Following Jamie's arrest, his family faced various issues in the community they live in. His father Eddie's van was defaced with offensive graffiti and their neighbours persistently watched them, making their once quiet lives feel like a constant surveillance.
Eddie in particular seemed to be greatly affected by his son's absence, as he struggled to manage his temper. He chased after a young boy who he thought was responsible for the rude writing on his van and held him to the ground. He also made a massive scene while out shopping with the family, causing the security to warn him to leave the premises.
Similarly, Jamie's sister Lisa (played by Amélie Pease) appeared quite withdrawn. Although not a central character, Lisa's sadness could be felt as she interacted with her parents in the final episode.
Adolescence is available to stream on Netflix.
