Late last week Netflix dropped their latest drama inspired by true events, Apple Cider Vinegar, and honestly, it's all we've been able to think about. The six-part series follows Belle Gibson, a wellness influencer who claims to have cured her brain cancer with a healthy diet and holistic approach, except, she never had cancer in the first place.
The series is inspired the true story of the influencer of the same name who was exposed in 2015 for not donating to a number of charities she had claimed to, which then opened the flood gates for people to begin suspecting if she actually had cancer. It was then discovered she had never been sick.
Not only does the series follow Belle's journey, but also that of Milla, a wellness influencer who is genuinely sick, Lucy who is struggling with cancer and looking for alternative methods to cure, and Chanelle, Milla's best friend, who works with two journalists to bring Belle down.
But how does the series end? Are Belle's lies discovered? Here's exactly how the series wraps up for each of the main characters.
The ending of Apple Cider Vinegar explained
What happened to Belle?
The sixth and final episode of the series kicks off with Belle attending Milla's funeral. From the look on Chanelle's face it's clear Belle wasn't actually invited to the service, but in classic Belle form shows up anyway.
The episode then gives us a flashback to earlier that day when Belle receives an email from Justin and Sean asking for answers to their questions about her numerous charity donations. Belle then scrambles and gives them a number of answers before sending off a donation to one charity.
Back at the wake, Belle has an awkward phone conversation with Hunter's mum who is asking where the money is she promised for her son's lifesaving surgery. She's also told by Arlo how much Milla disliked her when she tries to connect with him. So far, not a good day for Belle.
Things then go from bad to worse when The Age publish their story about her not giving the charity donations she claimed to. While she initially gets messages of support from her followers, the tide soon turns and people begin to question the authenticity of her claims about her cancer.
Back at home Clive is considering meeting up with Justin to speak about Belle, but upon meeting up with Nathan, Belle's son's biological father, he realises he would lose access to Belle's son who he has built a great bond with. Therefore, he doesn't meet up with Justin.
Belle returns home after being stopped at Apple headquarters in America. She also learns her book isn't being published. Clive and Belle have a tough conversation and Clive shows his commitment to staying with Belle. Belle then suggests they move to Los Angeles.
The last we see of Belle is when she's being interviewed in her friend's home for 60 Minutes to discuss her story and is being paid $75,000 for her appearance.
What happened to Milla?
Sadly Milla passes away at the end of the fifth episode and the sixth one begins with Belle attending her funeral. Belle also goes to the wake where she attempts to connect with Arlo, however Arlo calls Belle out on her lies. The last we see of Chanelle, Joe and Arlo is the three of them planting trees in the garden, most likely in memory of Milla and her mum.
What happened to Lucy and Justin?
The sixth episode sees Justin and Sean finally find a way to get their article on Belle published by going after the charity angle, rather than that she's faking her cancer.
After its publication, Lucy, who is still in a retreat in Peru, reads the article and then posts a comment asking if Belle's cancer has ever been verified, much to the delight of Justin.
Justin also speaks to Hunter's mum who discovers she's been blocked by Belle and realises she has to cancel her son's life-changing surgery because Belle isn't providing the money. Justin later works with the family to share their story about Hunter and Belle's empty promises.
Lucy agrees to come home and undergoes treatment while also carrying on with her wellness journey and gets Justin involved in yoga and ice baths. It's not confirmed what happens to Lucy after her treatment ends.
