It's basically TV lore at this point that any Harlan Coben adaptation must include either Richard Armitage or James Nesbitt, and luckily for us the latest series Missing You stars both of them. But who is the mysterious character Nesbitt plays in Missing You?

The new series dropped yesterday (1st January) and across five episodes we follow missing persons detective Kat Donovan who discovers the ex-boyfriend who ghosted her 11 years ago has popped up on a dating app. This discovery propels Kat to reopen the mystery of her dad's death all those years ago.

And one person who had seemingly had a big part to play in her father's death is Calligan, played by James Nesbitt.

This isn't the first time we've seen Nesbitt in a Netflix Harlan Coben series, having previously played Detective Broome in the 2022 series Stay Close.

However, in Missing You, he's now on the other side and playing a criminal mastermind, so who is James Nesbitt's mysterious character Calligan? Here's what you need to know about him.

Who is James Nesbitt's Missing You character Calligan?

Throughout Missing You, Nesbitt's character Calligan is continually referenced but we don't actually meet him properly until episode four.

Calligan is an organised crime boss with enormous power and wealth, with episode three revealing he began working as a local dealer before working his way up in London's crime world.

Kat begins to suspect for a man like to evade capture for so long he must have had help from the inside. It takes a conversation with Stagger for Kat to realise her dad was the man Calligan had on the inside. Stagger shows her a picture of her dad and Calligan together, revealing Clint had betrayed the police by working for Calligan.

Stagger then put forward the lie that Clint didn't want to work for Calligan any more and so Calligan had him killed.

Calligan becomes aware Kat is poking around the story of her dad's death and wants his name to be kept out of it and so he arranges a meeting with her in an art gallery. Well, by that we mean he has her kidnapped and dropped off at the gallery, where he's waiting for her like a Bond villain.

At their meeting Calligan reveals he did not have Kat's father killed, and that he liked working with Clint. He reveals he was an asset to him and has places he could kill people if he wanted to but that's not what he did to Clint.

He also revealed Monte Leburne, who originally confessed to Clint's murder, also didn't do it. He tells Kat Monte asked to confess to Clint's murder in order to get more privileges in prison, which he would get thanks to the help from someone on the inside. Calligan plants the seed in Kat's mind that only someone in the police could have murdered and got away with killing her daad.

Calligan later helps Kat out by connecting her with Parker, the man her dad was having an affair with and that's the last we see of him.

So while he didn't directly kill Clint, he's hardly the most innocent of men.
