Earlier this week the BBC dropped a new police drama series The Jetty, telling the story of Detective Ember Manning (Jenna Coleman) who begins the series investigating a fire at a boat house, but the investigation soon takes a turn and Ember dives into a complex case of sexual abuse and reexamining the case of the disappearance of Amy Knightly from 17 years ago.
The case leads her to question her own history with her recently deceased husband Mack, who she discovers was having a relationship with Amy before her disappearance all those years ago. She's also got to contend with a podcaster investigating Amy's case, and her own daughter's struggles throughout school.
So how does the series wrap up? Well, after three episodes we see Ember arrested by the police for perverting the course of justice as she kept her knowledge of Mack's relationship with Amy a secret from her colleagues. But thankfully as episode four kicks off she is released on bail and carries on her investigations. So what does she discover? These are all the important questions Ember gets answers for in the season finale of The Jetty.
Get ready for some major spoilers.
Who killed Amy Knightly?
It turns out Amy Knightly's (accidental) killer was Ember herself. The night Amy died was the night of Ember's 17th birthday party. Mack/Malachy lied to Ember that he had a factory shift when in actual fact he was using the evening to break up with Amy, however before leaving Ember's she found Rohypnol in his pocket and he let her keep them.
At the boathouse Amy had convinced Caitlin to accompany her, and lied that they would lose their virginities together, with Amy and Mack sleeping together, while Caitlin had sex with Joe, Mack's half brother. While having sex with Joe, Caitlin changed her mind and stormed out, Amy followed her and revealed she had lied to her and essentially given Caitlin to Joe because Joe was blackmailing Mack and Amy about their relationship and was threatening to go the police about their illegal age difference.
Amy stormed back to the boathouse, where Mack then tried to break up with her and as they were arguing Joe ran away driving away in Mack's car.
Back at the pub Ember and Arj were high and having a great time, until Mack called them asking to pick him up. Driving high Ember and Arj picked up Mack, and Ember then accidentally drove past and hit Amy who was running into the car. However, Mack lied to her and said she had just hit a log.
In order to protect Ember, Mack convinced Arj he was the one driving (which wasn't difficult due to the drugs in his system) and to help him find Amy. They discovered she was in fact dead and they buried her under the boathouse.
Who killed Riz?
In the 17 years since Amy's death, Arj believed he was the one responsible for killing her. After the boathouse was sold to the new owner and renovations were beginning, Arj was worried about Amy's remains being discovered and so he dug up her remains and set fire to the boathouse to cover his tracks. However, he messed up by leaving one of Amy's bones at the scene.
Podcaster Riz, who had turned up in town a few weeks prior to investigate Amy's disappearance, hired a private investigator to go into the boat house, and he found Amy's bone which Ember then confiscated as evidence, and left in her locker. However, the PI had taken a picture of the bone and sent it to Riz before Ember took it away. Arj discovered Riz had the photo and so he stole her laptop.
Riz tracked her laptop down to the boathouse. The audio recording from her murder featured a whirring sound that Ember recognised from a boat at the boathouse when she went to go and speak to Arj. It was hearing this sound that made Ember put the pieces together and realise Arj had killed Riz.
What happened to Ember and Arj?
Arj confessed his feelings for Ember and when she realised she had in fact killed Amy, he wanted the pair to continue to cover up her murder as he loved Ember and wanted to be with her. However, Ember wasn't down for this and tried to escape but Arj attacked her and strangled her.
When she awoke at the end of the jetty, she saw Arj dousing himself and the jetty with petrol. He then set himself alight and Ember managed to escape by crawling into the water.
While Arj had no intent throughout the 17 years of revealing what he thought he did to Amy, Ember had made her mind up to confess to the police what she did to Amy. However, after meeting up with a now grownup Caitlin and confessing what she did, Ember decided to continue the lie that Arj killed Amy.
Caitlin said there was a difference between truth and justice, and Ember then decided now she had confessed the truth there would be no justice in going to the police and telling the truth and abandoning her daughter by having to go to prison.
With the knowledge her husband was in fact innocent, Ember, Hannah and Ember's mum ended the series spreading Mack's ashes.
