We’re heading back to the planet of Arrakis with Paul Atreides, Chani and more for Dune: Part Two, which comes to cinemas on 1st March. But, will there be another film in the sci-fi franchise?
The sequel stars Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh and Austin Butler and follows Paul as he seeks revenge for his family and must choose between the love of his life and the fate of the universe.
We can’t wait to watch the epic adventure after the first film was released nearly three years ago. But if, like us, you already want to know if there will be more movies then here is everything you need to know about Dune 3.
Will there be a Dune 3?
Currently, there hasn’t been any official confirmation of a third instalment in the Dune franchise.
But, director Dennis Villeneuve has already said he wants to make a third film which would be based on Frank Herbert’s second novel in the series, Dune Messiah, and that the script is almost done.
Speaking to South Korean press last December, he said, “The screenplay is almost finished but it is not finished. It will take a little time… There’s a dream of making a third movie… it would make absolute sense to me.” Can’t wait!
Who might be in the Dune 3 cast?
If a third instalment does go ahead, we would expect the majority of the main cast to return based on the events of the book by Frank Herbert. They would include:
- Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides
- Zendaya as Chani
- Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan
- Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica
- Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck
What might be the plot of Dune 3?
Spoiler alert if you haven’t read the books, but a third film would follow Paul’s rule as Emperor after accepting the role of messiah to the Fremen. We can expect to see him grapple with the burdens of leadership and the weight of prophecy.
Plus, we'd also see Paul marry Princess Irulan to secure his leadership, but continue a relationship with Chani who he later has two children with.
What would be the Dune 3 release date?
As there’s been no official confirmation, we can’t say for sure but if a third instalment in the Dune franchise does go ahead, then we’d expect to see it in 2026 or 2027. Fingers crossed, Dune fans!
