If you’re obsessed with TikTok like the rest of us, then you might have heard about this new app called Lemon8.

The photo and video-sharing app is owned by TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, and it's surged in downloads after being launched on app stores in February.

Lemon8 is a photo and video sharing app, that looks a lot like a combination of Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest.

Much like our favourite apps, you're able to scroll through videos and photos and content on the app often focuses on a specific topic, like fashion, beauty or cooking. It even has a ‘for you’ page!

Who owns Lemon8?

Lemon8 is owned by ByteDance, the same company that owns TikTok.

The app is ByteDance's attempt at competing with US-based Instagram, which users are liking less and less, and its connection to TikTok, the most popular app in the US, can influence users to move from Instagram.

Why is Lemon8 so popular?

Since its release in the UK and the US in February, it has surged the app charts. But, Lemon8 was first released in Japan in 2020 and by 2022, it had more than five million monthly users worldwide, with expansions into Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Singapore.

It also has similarities to a popular Chinese lifestyle app known as Xiaohongshu, which translates to “Little Red Book”, hence why many overseas users love the app.
