Great British Bake Off fans have been rallying around Steph Blackwell after she had a bit of a ‘mare in last night's tense final. After 10 weeks watching the bakers rustle up a selection of delightful dishes in the GBBO tent, it was David Atherton who was crowned the winner of the 2019 series.

Shop assistant Steph had been tipped as the favourite to win after being awarded Star Baker four times throughout the series, which was more than any other contestant in the competition. But sadly it just wasn’t her day.

First up, the bakers had to make a luxurious chocolate cake and Steph didn’t do too badly with her classic Black Forest gateau, the only criticism being that it was slightly overbaked. But when it came to the Technical challenge, she didn’t bake her stilton soufflé properly and basically presented a tray of slushy liquid to Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith.

The 28-year-old also failed to impress the pair with her picnic feast Showstopper. At one point, poor Steph said: "I just feel a bit stupid. It couldn’t have gone much worse, could it?"

But the lovely GBBO fans at home could feel her pain and quickly flocked to Twitter to give her lots of virtual hugs.

"I just want to hug Steph and tell her she’s wonderful," one wrote, while another tweeted, Omg that was a difficult watch. Steph has been my favourite from the start to see her upset got you right in the feels one bad day can ruin it all is not right."

Despite narrowly losing out to David, Steph had only good things to say about her time on the Channel 4 show: "What an incredible journey this has been, from something inconceivable to where I am now is what fairytales are made of."

We reckon it's definitely not the last we've seen of Steph and her Star Baker skills.
