30 times celebrities powerfully normalised breastfeeding

Breastfeeding shouldn't be a taboo, and these famous faces are reminding us of that...

By , and

Breastfeeding, despite being an entirely natural bodily function and literally necessary for helping to keep a baby alive, is sadly too often speckled with shame for many. Disappointingly, there are still stories of feeding mothers who have suffered abuse – or who been sidelined – by daring to do it outside of a public toilet. (Reminder: this is even though it's actually illegal for anyone – be it in a coffee shop, cafe or on public transport – to ask a breastfeeding woman to leave on that basis).

Some small-minded people are why it's a) so refreshing and b) actually kinda crucial to see celebrities proudly normalising breastfeeding, by posting beautiful, intimate photographs of themselves doing it as a reminder that it is so, so normal. Sharing these images of breastfeeding are also a great way to facilitate conversations around some of the struggles that can accompany feeding a little one too, from mastitis (ouch! If you know, you know) to finding your milk supply is running low or dry. Heck, Ashley Graham is even out here showing twin breastfeeding life!

Here are just some of the empowering famous faces, from Jenna Dewan to Cardi B (in a music video, no less!), with platforms who are making a difference by helping to remove the stigma surrounding breastfeeding. Shout out to all of them for moving the dial that little bit further forward:

1

Jenna Dewan

After welcoming little Rhiannon into the world in early June, Jenna has been keeping fans updated about her life in the baby bubble – including all the ups and downs of breastfeeding. "Postpartum is truly a vibe," she captioned one carousel of images.

2

Molly-Mae Hague

Taking to her Instagram Story, first-time mum Molly-Mae Hague opened up about the struggles of breastfeeding.

"Had a super super low supply yesterday, literally couldn't get a single droplet of milk from me," the former Love Islander told her fans. "For the first time we had to give Bambi some formula because she just wasn't sleeping from being starving/not getting enough breast milk as my body couldn't produce it."

Molly-Mae said she believes the cause of the problem is tiredness. "I think [it's] from being so exhausted," she went on, before describing the experience as a "really crap moment".

"I'm REALLY determined to not give up," she continued. "Hopefully it was just a bad day... just managed 4oz in one pump so that's really perked me up!"

Ashley Graham

Superhero mum Ashley Graham always keeps it real with her 21 million followers – and never more so than when she uploaded a photo of herself tandem feeding her twins, Malachi and Roman. She captioned the snap: "double fisting 😂 (peep the whacky tan lines)".

Her followers clearly appreciated the model allowing them a glimpse into the world of mothering twins, as one wrote in response: "As a new mama of twins I know the struggle of breastfeeding them. I’m so impressed by the tandem feeding and hope we can get there soon. Power to you!"

Another added, "Gurrllll I am exhausted with ONE breastfeeding baby! 👏👏❤️" while a third said, "This picture is so powerful. The strength of a woman."

This is far from the first time the mother-of-three has been candid about breastfeeding (and all things related to pregnancy or the fourth trimester) – since welcoming her eldest child, Isaac, in 2020, she regularly shared updates on everything from feeding in public (see below) to postpartum hair loss.

6

Stacey Solomon

After welcoming her fourth child, Rose, Loose Women star Stacey Solomon took to Instagram to share her breastfeeding experience, telling her 6 million followers that all she does is "eat, sleep, feed, repeat!"

In another post, Stacey explained her nipples were like "one giant blister" due to breastfeeding, and she also opened up about the other difficulties she'd been experiencing.

"I'm struggling again with feeding this time around, so spending all of my energy trying to feed, eat and rest," she said. "Also seeing local breastfeeding specialists and the community midwives who have been incredible, so hoping for a more positive journey in the end this time but not putting pressure on myself. Even though it makes me a bit sad. Whatever will be will be."

Halsey

Back in 2021, singer Halsey proudly posted a photo "just in time" for World Breastfeeding Week, showing them breastfeeding their first child, Ender Ridley Aydin, who is mere weeks old in the picture. The cutie!

Throughout pregnancy, Halsey regularly shared updates on their changing body and connected with fans over "the joys and horrors" they experienced while carry a baby – helping to further smash taboos and stigma placed on parents. One taboo in particular that Halsey has been speaking out on is wanting to still remain connected to their sexuality, whilst embarking on a journey of parenthood.

"The idea that me as a sexual being and my body as a vessel and gift to my child are two concepts that can co-exist peacefully and powerfully," they said, when revealing their album cover artwork for If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power.

We're so here for it.

"I wish I wouldn’t have put so much pressure on myself surrounding breast feeding. I wish I had a formula ready that my baby liked, and not been afraid of using it."
