While we've always loved Demi Moore, the actor is definitely having a major moment right now, thanks to the release of her latest film, The Substance. In the movie, she plays Elisabeth Sparkle, a renowned aerobics instructor who is fired on her 50th birthday. To try and salvage her fading celebrity, she accepts a substance that promises to transform her into an enhanced (see: younger) version of herself. But instead, she experiences horrifying side effects.

The plot, which explores Hollywood's unrealistic beauty standards, is something that Demi can relate to. The 61-year-old has been very open about her struggles with body image over the years, which led to her putting her body through some pretty harsh diet and fitness routines when she was younger.

For example, in her 2019 memoir, Inside Out, Demi revealed that during the 90s - especially after giving birth to her second daughter, Scout - she followed an intense regime. Cutting out carbs, running, biking, and working out on "every machine imaginable," Demi admitted she felt like she "couldn't stop exercising."

And, when writing about the 1992 film, A Few Good Men, she admitted: "Getting in shape for that movie launched the obsession with working out that would consume me over the next five years. I never dared let up."

"I put so much pressure on myself," Demi confessed more recently to CBS Sunday Morning. "The idea of what I did to my body, it's, like, so crazy, so ridiculous."

These days, Demi has a much healthier approach to diet and exercise, and is keen for others to know that being healthy is the most important thing. Now in her seventh decade - and still looking completely and utterly fire - let's take a look at how Demi stays in shape and the lifestyle choices she makes to keep fit...

And remember: if you're worried about your relationship with food and/or exercise, or are concerned about a loved one, Beat are there to help provide support and information.

What is Demi Moore's workout routine?

Bikram yoga

Bikram yoga is a type of hot yoga that involves two breathing exercises and a series of 26 asanas (poses). According to Healthline, it helps to improve flexibility, build bone density, reduce stress, ease depression, nourish the skin and provide a cardiovascular boost.

In 2010, Demi revealed that she had taken up this form of exercise. At the time, her then-trainer, Gregory Joujon-Roche confirmed to InStyle that she had combined the workout with strength training.

As per MailOnline, Demi also became a verified Kundalini yoga teacher a few years later.

Dance cardio

After taking a break from exercising altogether in 2015, Demi took to social media in 2019 to announce that she had taken up virtual dance cardio classes.

Dance cardio is kind of similar to an aerobics class. Basically, it's a full-body workout that combines cardio exercises with dance choreography, and for many - including Demi - is a fun way to stay in shape.

Upon announcing her transition into dance cardio, Demi shared a video on Instagram alongside the caption: "I haven't exercised in over four years," while asking her followers to wish her luck. The actor revealed that she was taking her dance classes through 'The Mirror,' which is now known as the 'lululemon Studio.' These at-home workouts are tailored to all levels, from beginner classes all the way to experts.

What is Demi Moore's diet?

Demi's a raw vegan

MailOnline reported that Demi follows a raw vegan diet, which in the past has been described as a diet centred on food that can be eaten raw, such as vegetables, fruit and legumes. It's also naturally low in processed foods.

Obviously excluding all foods of animal origin, Healthline adds the raw aspect dictates "foods should be eaten completely raw or heated at temperatures below 104 - 118°F (40 - 48°C)."

Raw veganism is pretty popular in Hollywood, with fellow celebs like Gwyneth Paltrow and Megan Fox also having been strong advocates of the diet in the past. But it's a pretty intense one to follow, so it certainly isn't for everyone.

There are some alleged benefits, including the fact that it eliminates processed and high-fat foods, which, according to the NHS "have been linked to an increased risk of health conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes and heart disease."

However, a 2023 study on the effects of raw veganism from a clinical perspective concluded that "a raw vegan diet with more than 90% raw food cannot be recommended for a long time due to micronutrient deficiencies as well as related complications."

Demi's sober

In an ever-growing health-conscious society, plenty of celebs - including Demi - have decided to turn their back on alcohol. In her 2019 memoir, she revealed that she had been sober for 20 years, but briefly broke it with a beer.

Demi explained her sobriety to Harpaars Bazaar in 2019, saying: "Part of being sober is [that] I don't want to miss a moment of life."
