We’ve reached August, our favourite transition month bridging Summer and Autumn. For most people, August represents the last month of fun, relaxation, and sun before September brings new beginnings (and wet weather). If you’re expecting a baby this month, you might be looking for a name that embodies that August feeling.
Every year, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) collates data about all the names given to babies born in England and Wales.
The following are the top names for baby boys and baby girls born in August last year:
Top August baby names for boys:
- Oliver
- Leo
- George
- Arthur
- Noah
- Muhammad
- Harry
- Freddie
- Charlie
- Oscar
Top August baby names for girls:
- Amelia
- Olivia
- Ava
- Isla
- Grace
- Lily
- Mia
- Emily
- Ivy
- Sophia
However, if you’re looking for something more unique but which still nicely aligns with your baby’s month of birth, how about these alternative August names?
- August (a little on the nose, but we like it)
- Summer (it is still Summer for a little while longer!)
- Augustus (a traditional, masculine name for babies born in August)
- Augusta (a saintly, feminine variation of Augustus)
- Bay (Though it officially means "berry," Bay is a refreshing water name for your Summer baby)
- Beach (since you’ll be squeezing in your last beach trips before Autumn hits, why not commemorate the event?)
- Coral (Coral is always ‘in’ during August, plus it’s cute and beachy)
- Daisy (you’ll find these everywhere during this month!)
- Lily (a flower in bloom during August)
- Sunflower (for the bold!)
- Dahlia (another August flower, but with an edge)
- Cora (a popular August name in the US, meaning “maiden” in Greek)
August famously has three birthstones - Peridot, spinel and sardonyx. While these certainly make for unique names, they might be a little out there for some. Fortunately, there are some sweet shorteners you can try for size:
- Perry (a nickname from Peridot)
- Perdit (playing with the letters from Peridot)
- Dot or Dotty (short for Peridot, and you’ll still find it in a baby book)
- Nelly (taking the ‘nel’ of Spinel)
- Nyx (for Sardonyx)
Whatever you decide to choose, we're sure it's the perfect decision for you and your little one!
