4 best eye creams that fight dark circles, wrinkles and puffiness, tried and tested 2025
As recommended by dermatologists and skin experts!
I don't know about you, but right now my under eyes could rival a zombie's (think, dark circles, puffy eye bags and dehydration lines creeping up around the edges). That's why I've been on a mission to find the best eye creams and serums – because I want to wake up looking like I've had 10 hours sleep, and not spent half the night catching up on MAFS episodes.
If all of the above sounds familiar, we may be able to help. Yep, not only have we been testing out some of the industry's top-rated eye creams and serums, but we spoke to two consultant dermatologists, Dr Derrick Phillips and Dr Ophelia Veraitch, who shared their expertise on everything eye cream.
But before we get to the product recs, first, an age-old question, answered:
Is eye cream necessary?
The general consensus? Not always... But wait! Before you click off this page, hear me out. It's not a hard and fast 'no', it's more a 'depending on what you want out of it'.
"Eye creams aren’t strictly necessary. A good face moisturiser can usually be used safely around the eyes, as long as it isn’t too heavy or fragranced," Dr Derrick says. "Where eye creams do come into their own is if you are trying to introduce certain active ingredients, like retinol or vitamin C, to target fine lines or dark circles," he adds.
And not only that, but because "the skin around the eyes is much thinner, it can be more prone to congestion," Dr Ophelia adds – aka, thicker face creams used around the eyes could cause milia. Whereas eye creams carefully formulated with said ingredients are designed to be tolerated by the thinner, more delicate skin around the eyes, so you can still reap the benefits without as much risk of irritation.
So, for hydration alone, your face cream is often enough, but for targeted actives, an eye cream can be a smart choice.
How to know which eye cream is for you
Skincare can be a minefield, we know. So, to help you understand which eye cream is best suited to your needs, Dr Ophelia breaks down the benefits of the recommended ingredients below:
Caffeine – reduces fluid build-up under the eyes by tightening blood vessels, which, in turn, reduces puffiness.
Niacinamide – brightens pigmentation (dark circles) and strengthens the skin barrier.
Retinol – gently stimulates collagen and cell turnover to improve fine lines, wrinkles and tone.
Hyaluronic acid – hydrates and plumps thin, wrinkled undereyes by drawing water into the skin.
