Being in the salon chair, staring at your new nail colour and absolutely hating it for over an hour has to be one of the top 5 worst beauty moments going. Regretting your mani choice and not having the guts to say anything about it, whilst you still can, means you’ve got a good month to come to terms with your decision. Honestly, teal? What were you thinking!
For all your 2026 manicures, we vow that this will never happen to you again. Instead, you’ll be the girl at the party who gets all the compliments on her fresh set of nails, because we have sourced all the failsafe options that come with an envy guarantee.
Some nail colours are better suited to certain skin tones, and other shades get more compliments in certain seasons (it’s all very complicated), so we’ve broken it down into our top 5 most-complimented colours, so you know exactly what to ask for at your next salon appointment. Regret? Be gone!
Classic red
As timeless as they come, a classic red manicure is *the* ultimate manicure. And celebrity manicurist Ami Streets via Kure Bazaar tends to agree, explaining that "classic reds remain unmatched in their impact - confident, elegant, and universally flattering". No other manicure screams girl-boss quite like a true. It’s also a great choice for anyone with cooler undertones in their skin, particularly if the red is blue-based or a berry tone.
Milky sheers
Ever since Hailey Bieber debuted her glazed doughnut nails, sheer manicures have been all the rage, and we don’t see the trend dying down anytime soon. Neither does Ami! “Soft neutrals such as beige, cream, and milky sheers are equally admired for their understated luxury”. The soft hue and translucent effect have a super luxe vibe, which is undoubtedly why they are such a compliment magnet of a manicure.
This colourway also goes hand in hand with the rise of hard gel and BIAB manicures, which Ami explains are “well suited to sheer and milky tones [because they create] a healthy and super glossy effect that feels effortless and refined”.

Chocolate brown
Although we are starting to see the tail end of the winter months, chocolate brown is an always-on nail colour choice. The right shade of brown or burgundy can bring such depth and richness to a set of nails, and that’s the kind of sought-after colour that will get you year-round compliments! We are particularly loving the Magnifico shade from Kure Bazaar, it's deep, rich, and oh-so-Parisian.
Natural nails
Whilst we will always have time for the classic reds and the chocolate browns, sometimes there is no better choice than a natural hue. From baby pinks to creamy whites, a ‘your-nails-but-better’ manicure will lend you to the “enduring clean girl aesthetic” (as Ami puts it). Ami also says that it’s the perfect choice for anyone with shorter nails as the natural colour helps “elongate the nail and maintain a clean appearance”
French tips
Another manicure for the ages, this style has stood the test of time for a reason. A natural nail bed with a white tip will always draw in the ‘oh I love* your nails’ and the ‘where did you get those done!!’ compliments that stroke our ego in all the right ways. In fact, Ami says not only are “clean modern French finishes” some of the most complimented, but they are “always requested” too!
