12 best lightweight foundations for a fresh, glowy complexion – tried and tested

Trust me when I say there's a formula for everyone!

Lightweight foundations are proof that less really can be more. Think more glow, more comfort, and a complexion that looks fresh and effortless – minus the heavy feel or cakey finish that can sometimes come with fuller-coverage formulas.

Don't get me wrong, a full-coverage foundation has a spot in every makeup bag. But sometimes, daily wear calls for something that lets your skin breathe, yet still evens out your tone.

The best lightweight foundations should essentially make your skin look like, well, skin – but brighter and more unified, all while feeling comfortable to wear.

The best lightweight foundations 2026

If there’s anyone to back this up, it’s makeup artist Emily Wood, who explains that lightweight foundations are all about creating a sheer wash of coverage that lets natural skin details show through – like freckles, texture and even the odd blemish or two.

“Typically, you can expect a fresh, skin-like finish with a lightweight foundation – anything from natural to radiant depending on the formula,” says Emily. “They’re designed to enhance rather than conceal, delivering that ‘your skin but better’ effect.”

While coverage remains subtle, modern lightweight formulas are anything but boring. Many are now packed with skin-loving ingredients, helping your base look good both immediately after application and throughout the day.

Tempted to purchase? Below, you’ll find 12 best lightweight foundations for 2026. From Victoria Beckham Beauty's The Foundation Drops that not only brightens but boasts a skin cell rejuvenating technology, to the oh-so-affordable Rimmel Multi-Tasker Wake Me Up Foundation & Concealer that sits at a comfortable £12.99, there’s a pick for everyone.

Scroll to the bottom too, as I also ask Emily the most common FAQs about lightweight foundations — from application tips to how to make a sheer base last longer.

1
Best lightweight foundation on a budget

Rimmel Multi-Tasker Wake Me Up Foundation & Concealer

Multi-Tasker Wake Me Up Foundation & Concealer

Multi-tasking by name and nature, this creamy formula can be used as both your foundation and concealer. With enough coverage to conceal a spot, but still feeling lightweight and comfortable to wear all over, it lends a radiant and revitalised glow to your complexion – whether you decide to use it as a spot concealer, or blended all over. I also highly appreciate the cooling metal applicator which is especially welcome on groggy mornings.

Glowing customer review: “Amazing for blending. The metal ball tip makes it easy to outline contour and blend it out for a flawless look. The coverage is amazing and the finished look is always glowy.”

2
Best lightweight stick for glow

Revolution Skin Silk Glow Tint Sheer Foundation Stick

Skin Silk Glow Tint Sheer Foundation Stick

I grew up wearing Revolution and even after many years, I still reach for this budget beauty brand. I mean, I’m only 25 (lol), but that’s still loyalty. There’s loads I’d recommend but in the lightweight foundation category, it has to be the Skin Silk Glow Foundation Stick.

It literally does everything it promises to. With just a few swipes, it layers on a creamy, radiant, sheer wash of coverage that has enough oomph to knock back redness and even out my skin tone. I still need a concealer to tackle spots, but for days when I want light, comfortable coverage, this is where it’s at.

Glowing customer review: “Wow this is beautiful and lightweight. It gives you a lovely dewy look. They could do with a few more shades to get my perfect match, but it glides on the skin and blends in well. The coverage is light but fab for a day to day look.”

Best lightweight balm

Laura Mercier Tinted Blur Balm

Tinted Blur Balm

When Laura Mercier launches a new foundation, it always gets my attention. The product in question? The Tinted Blur Balm. Well, technically this isn’t a foundation, but more of a lightweight, sheer veil of coverage.

In a few swipes, the hydrating balm delivers a soft-focus, filtered finish – as opposed to anything too dewy or matte. It evens tone, softens redness, and keeps texture looking almost airbrushed from a distance. Day-to-day I prefer a little more coverage, so if you’re like me, this is the perfect, low- maintenance base to bring on holiday to a hot climate.

Glowing customer review: “The tinted blur balm by Laura Mercier is the definition of your skin but better, I'm literally glowing! I've gotten so many compliments too when wearing this and it lasts all day.”

4
Best multi-tasking lightweight foundation

The Minimalist Perfecting Complexion Stick

Perfecting Complexion Stick

There’s so much hype around the Merit Minimalist Complexion Stick. I mean, it is the brand’s best selling product for a reason. Scribble the blendable, creamy stick over your skin and use a dense brush to buff it in. The finish is natural and skin-like, simply evening tone and knocking back redness.

It’s also described as a foundation-concealer hybrid, so you can use it to spot conceal specific areas for light coverage, or apply more generously for an all-over finish. Either way, the result will always look like your skin, just smoother.

Glowing customer review: “This tool is a new number on product in my morning routine! They were not kidding when they said it would replace your concealer and foundation. The ease of this product is why I will always use it!”

Best lightweight foundation overall

Sweed Glass Skin Foundation

Glass Skin Foundation

The day my Sweed Glass Skin Foundation runs out will be a very, very sad day. I was only introduced to this foundation a few months ago, and I have not put it down since. Doing exactly as it says on the bottle, it lends my complexion a beautifully glossy and smooth sheen, evening out texture and pigmentation in the process.

But perhaps one of my favourite things about this formula is how comfortable it is to wear. Packed with vitamin E, sucrose and sea water, it moves naturally with the contours of my face rather than sitting stiffly on top of the skin.

Glowing customer review: The coverage is great. The shade is perfect and this is now one of my best foundations. I love the way it gives a subtle glow and it lasts all day until I cleanse in the evening. You won’t regret picking this up.”

6
Best lightweight foundation for oily skin

Kylie Cosmetics Skin Tint Blurring Elixir Foundation

Skin Tint Blurring Elixir Foundation

Ngl, I had zero expectations trying this. But surprisingly, I now reach for it every day. IMO, it’s the perfect balance between a foundation and a skin tint, offering the right amount of coverage to give a blurring, flawless finish but without feeling heavy. The texture is very thin so it glides on seamlessly, is easy to blend and settles into a skin-like finish – not too dewy nor too matte. For a skin tint, I’m also impressed at its longevity. It lasts me a full day of wear without fading or slipping into creases or fine lines. Kylie, you done good.

Glowing customer review: “Great colour match. Easy to apply. Coverage could be a bit better to cover blemishes but perfect for day wear or just for work if you don’t like heavy foundation.”

Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter

Hollywood Flawless Filter

For many, the Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter is an ‘I can’t live without’ product – and that includes Emily Wood herself. Undoutably it’s one of the most popular skin tints, foundations, filters – call it what you will – for adding a light, sheer wash of coverage and a load of glow.

Thanks to the handy wand applicator, a quick scribble over your cheeks, forehead and nose is enough to softly even out your complexion. With a very light texture, is also blends seamlessly and lasts an impressive amount of time before a touch up is required.

Glowing customer review: “The flawless filter is amazing. It brightens up my face and it makes my skin look younger and fresh. I’d recommend this to everybody I know.”

Best luxury lightweight foundation

Victoria Beckham Beauty The Foundation Drops with TFC8®

The Foundation Drops with TFC8®

Your skin, but posh! VB really married luxury skincare with foundation, and although a splurge, it's one we can justify.

These silky drops melt into the face like a dream, leaving your skin looking as radiant as Victoria's. Plus, that TFC8® tech? It helps your skin act like its younger self – improving elasticity, hydration, and smoothness over time while supporting the skin barrier. Think of it as a built-in skin coach that encourages your cells to do their best work.

Glowing customer review: "I originally purchased the Victoria Beckham Beauty Foundation Drops directly from the VB website and absolutely fell in love with them! The texture is silky and blends like a dream — lightweight yet gives such beautiful, natural coverage. When I pair it with my Augustinus Bader skincare, my skin literally glows all day long."

Best lightweight foundation for coverage

VIEVE Skin Nova Complexion Balm

Skin Nova Complexion Balm

From when I first got my hands on the Vieve Skin Nova Complexion Balm, it has not left my makeup bag since. I’d call this the perfect everyday foundation – well, balm. IMO it has the ideal finish, not matte nor dewy but a skin-like in-between.

The coverage is just enough to cover blemishes, pigmentation or redness but it still appears natural – nor does it oxidise throughout the day. And possible my favourite part? Thanks to ingredients like niacinamide and polyglutamic acid, it feels comfortable to wear without sinking into creases or fine lines.

Glowing customer review: “I’m normally a full coverage girl but this really is buildable if you need to. I normally get patchy foundation near my brows but haven’t with this. My face feels incredibly soft and moisturised.”

Best lightweight foundation for combination skin

Rare Beauty Liquid Touch Weightless Foundation

Liquid Touch Weightless Foundation

This is for the makeup lovers who love coverage but hate feeling like they're wearing it. Rare Beauty's formula floats on like air, evens out pigmentation and stays comfy all day. Bonus: No eye sting, no cakey chaos (aka, perfect for sensitive complexions)! Just flawless, breathable skin that feels as good as it looks.

Glowing customer review: "The formula for these products works really well with my skin. They are lightweight but have good coverage and the shade matching is great as well. Don’t go into it thinking you will need a lot of product. A little bit goes a long way that is another reason to like it! It lasts long time and it is all day wear! I love it. The price is good for the quality of the formula. I also have an issue with makeup making my eyes burn but the rare beauty formula has not made my eyes burn or redden at all. I will be using rare beauty as my makeup brand for good. Love it!"

L'Oréal Paris True Match Nude Plumping Tinted Serum

True Match Nude Plumping Tinted Serum

Part skincare, part makeup, all glow. This budget buy is infused with hyaluronic acid, meaning it plumps, smooths and evens out tone, all while looking undetectable on the skin. It's the perfect pick for no-makeup days… and glam nights when you just add a few extra drops. Smooth skin? Sorted.

Glowing customer review: "Brought this when L’Oréal was on 3 for 2 and this did not disappoint. I’ve been having really bad skin at the moment and this light weight serum with tint is great for the no makeup days but makes skin look great. Now using it as a foundation when I go out - I just put a few more drops on and looks so smooth and natural looking glory skin. LOVE IT"

e.l.f. Halo Glow Liquid Filter

Halo Glow Liquid Filter

If ‘lit-from-within’ were bottled, this would be it. e.l.f.’s Halo Glow went viral for all the right reasons – namely, its power to blur, brighten and glow, while also steering clear of greasy doughnut-like skin territory. Wear it alone for off-duty radiance or under foundation when you want to look like a walking filter.

Glowing customer review: "The e.l.f. Halo Glow Liquid Filter gives such a beautiful, healthy glow to the skin. It really blurs and smooths everything out, making the complexion look radiant and fresh without feeling heavy. The texture is lightweight and blends easily with fingers, sponge, or brush. I love using it under foundation for extra luminosity or on its own for a natural, glowy look. The coverage is light—more of a skin enhancer than a foundation—so don’t expect it to hide imperfections."

What is the best way to apply lightweight foundation?

Lightweight foundations are designed to bring you that just-woke-up-like-this, skin-like look – so it’s important to apply it in the right way. “The key to making lightweight foundation look natural is thin, strategic layers,” suggests Emily. “I recommend starting in the centre of the face around the nose and cheeks where most of us have redness or uneven tone and blending outward. This prevents product build-up around the hairline and jaw.

When actually applying the foundation, Emily recommends using light pressure, buffing it into the skin so that it absorbs properly rather than just sitting on top.

“Lightweight formulas are designed to enhance skin, not mask it, so think ‘skin tint’ rather than ‘full coverage’ base.” If needed, go back in with a small amount just where you want extra coverage instead of applying more everywhere,” says Emily.

Should you use fingers, a sponge or brush?

The tool you use to apply a lightweight foundation depends on the finish you are after explains Emily. “Fingers are great for the most skin-like result. The warmth of your hands helps melt the product in beautifully especially with stick or balm textures. A damp sponge gives a seamless, diffused finish and is perfect if you’re worried about over-applying. A dense buffing brush works well if you want slightly more coverage while still keeping it lightweight,” she says.

Who are lightweight foundations best suited for?

The great thing about lightweight foundations is that they work for everyone – whether you have dry, oily or acne-prone skin. “Lightweight foundations are ideal for anyone who prefers a natural, breathable base. They’re especially popular with people who like their real skin to show through (like me) freckles, texture and all,” says Emily.

“For acne-prone or sensitive skin, lightweight formulas can actually be a great option because they tend to feel less occlusive. The key is choosing non-comedogenic formulas and prepping skin properly,” adds Emily. She recommends something like the Revolution Superdewy SPF30 Skin Tint saying: “It’s ideal for those who want hydration, glow and light coverage without layering multiple heavy products.”

Calling on a lightweight foundation may be situational too. Yes they’re an excellent day-to-day choice for those who enjoy minimal makeup (same). But if you usually opt for a high-coverage formula, you may want to switch to a lighter layer in hot climates where you don’t want your makeup to feel heavy or slide off by midday.

How do you make lightweight foundation last longer?

Emily says it is all about the skin prep if you want your lightweight base to last the entire day. She spotlights four main steps to ensure a long-lasting base:

  • Use a lightweight moisturiser suited to your skin type.
  • Allow the skincare to fully absorb before applying makeup.
  • Use a gripping or blurring primer where makeup fades fastest.
  • Applying in thin layers rather than one thick layer.

“To lock it in, use a small amount of finely-milled powder and set only where needed – usually the T-zone. Over-powdering can take away the natural effect. A setting spray at the end helps melt everything together while boosting wear time,” recommends Emily.

Let me start by saying that narrowing down this edit of the 12 best lightweight foundations wasn’t easy — especially when there are hundreds of formulas on the market. And yes, I’m willing to wager that I’ve tried a fair few of them.

To create this roundup, I leaned on favourites from across the Cosmopolitan beauty team, as well as expert insight from Emily Wood. Every product was assessed with the everyday wearer in mind, taking into account texture, application, longevity and overall finish. And what came from it? A carefully curated selection of lightweight foundations that genuinely elevate your skin without feeling heavy or overdone.
