Best foundation for oily skin: 13 shine-control formulas, tried and tested

We've tested for all budgets, coverage preferences and finishes

By and

Finding the best foundation for oily skin can feel like a race against the clock. With summer just around the corner, the pressure to stay shine-free all day is real, especially when you’re churning through a pack of blotting papers a day or feeling your foundation slip off by midday.

But here’s the good news! Finding a foundation for oily skin doesn’t mean buying the first matte formula you see. Today, there are ways to make *any* foundation work for your oily complexion, from the skincare products you use to prep to the setting spray you use to keep everything in place.

Best foundations for oily skin...

Before your spree commences, we called on celebrity makeup artist, Buster Knight, to share his top tips on how to find, apply and wear foundation with oily skin. And we’ve (hi, your Cosmo beauty team) reviewed best-selling formulas and recommendations from Buster to create an edit of the best foundations to shop when you have oily skin.

1
Best foundation with a blurred finish

Huda Beauty Easy Blur Foundation

Easy Blur Foundation

Pros

  • It smooths the appearance of pores while keeping a skin-like finish
  • It lasts the day without turning cakey

Cons

  • It can settle into fine lines and pores so be sure to prep with a hydrating primer

I can vouch for everyone on the Cosmo beauty team by saying Huda Beauty’s Easy Blur Foundation is the dream if you want a blurred, soft-focus finish. Layered on top of the Easy Blur primer, this combo gives you an ultra-smoothed and unified complexion, while still adding natural radiance. The formula also contains ‘blurring polymers’ and niacinamide, so it gave my complexion a smooth, second-skin veil of coverage while still feeling hydrated. And most importantly for those with oily skin, it lasts impressively well – it only faded slightly over my chin, but shine was kept at bay all day.

Glowing Customer Review: “Been using this foundation for a couple of months now and I love it. Love the texture and the finish plus I have the power which actually works beautifully together.”

Clarins Skin Illusion Full Coverage Foundation 30ml

Skin Illusion Full Coverage Foundation 30ml

Pros

  • Skincare benefits in formula protect the skin and reduce blemishes over time.
  • Radiant matte finish enhances skin's natural appearance without looking cakey.
  • Does not separate with wear

Cons

  • Heavy glass packaging isn't great for travel

Admittedly, when this foundation launch landed on my desk, I almost immediately ruled it out. Clarins? For a 25-year-old? I think not... said the ignorant Gen Z. However, after seeing the results of my first 8-hour wear, I fell in love and came to the realisation that the brand isn't just for mature skin.

The finish of the foundation is dubbed 'luminous matte' and I couldn't agree more. It's perfect for those with a more oily complexion looking for a polished, 'your skin but better' look.

In terms of coverage, it is full; however, the lightweight, water-based formula had me falling in love at first swipe. It's not at all heavy on the skin and, contrary to a lot of full-coverage formulas, doesn't cake up after hours of wear. Acne marks, hyperpigmentation, redness where?!

I have oily skin to rival that of a refinery, yet this foundation keeps the slick at bay. Usually, after a long day of wear, my foundations tend to look a little worse for wear, but not this formula. Not a speck of separation in sight!

– Lia Mappoura, Beauty Writer

Best K-beauty foundation for oily skin

TIRTIR Mask Fit Red Cushion Foundation

Mask Fit Red Cushion Foundation

Pros

  • It lends flawless coverage while still feeling weightless to wear
  • It lends a soft-matte finish without looking cakey
  • It's super long lasting and doesn't fade throughout the day

Cons

  • The cushion applicator can make it tricky to apply the product to hard-to-reach areas like under the eyes

I have found my foundation soulmate – if that can be a thing?! I have tested *so* many formulas over the years, and while, yes, many have impressed me, the TIRTIR Mask Fit Red Cushion Foundation made me think: ‘I’ve found the one’.

It’s the K-Beauty foundation loved by celebrities (hi, Cynthia Erivo) and I can completely see why. When I tell you this foundation is flawless, it is flaw-less. When you pat the lightweight formula onto your skin using the unique, velvety sponge, it blurs texture, pigmentation and discolouration instantly. It’s giving, IRL filter vibes. The lasting power is impressive too, holding its full-coverage, demi-matte finish without turning cakey.

Best designer foundation for oily skin

GUCCI Éternité de Beauté - SPF 15 Foundation

Éternité de Beauté - SPF 15 Foundation

Pros

  • SPF15 offers skin protection
  • Infused with hyaluronic acid and black rose oil, it hydrates and soothes the skin, providing a comfortable wear
  • Doesn't need setting with powder as it's so mattifying

Cons

  • Expensive

While beauty is not only my passion, but my job, I would have never thought to try out a Gucci foundation. I mean, with so many well-established beauty brands out there (MAC, Estée Lauder, Clarins), why look to a fashion house for new makeup?

Well, luckily for me, testing out new makeup is my 9-5 and I was tasked a few years back with trialling Éternité de Beauté... Dolly Parton would be proud. A few swipes, lots of blending and 12 hours of wear later, and I was in love.

The formula is super matte and super full-coverage, catering to my foundation needs, so if, like me, you're an all-or-nothing, oily-skinned girlie, look no further.

This is all thanks to the bamboo powder in its ingredients list; shine is controlled all day and the appearance of pores is minimised, making it a top-tier contender. So much so that my setting powder addiction has been reduced. Who'd of thought it!

Best long-lasting foundation for oily skin

Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup

Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup

Pros

  • It offers full, long-lasting coverage
  • It's the perfect formula for a flawless finish

Cons

  • It's a little pricy
  • It doesn't come with a pump

Classics stay classics for a reason, and Estée Lauder’s Double Wear is a great example. I love using the oil-free formula when my oil production is in hyper mode, as it delivers great coverage without feeling like I’m caked in foundation. Plus, it’s self-setting, so it lasts the day without sliding around. As for the finish, it’s matte, but it doesn’t make me look flat. So when I layer on my bronzer, blush and highlighter, my complexion still looks radiant!

– Clare Stephenson, Senior Beauty E-commerce Writer.

Glowing Customer Review: “This is my must have foundation. It goes on beautifully without leaving your skin feeling heavy or it sitting in any fine lines. And it has long lasting wear even after a long working day.”

Best foundation for oily-combo skin

ILIA Skin Rewind Complexion Stick 10g

Skin Rewind Complexion Stick 10g

Pros

  • Contains ceramide-peptide complex, squalane, butterfly lavender extract, and kelp extract to hydrate and improve skin elasticity
  • Big shade range
  • Formula blurs imperfections and evens skin tone

Cons

  • Stick feels a little unhygienic directly applying onto skin

While foundation sticks may seem like a thing of the past (hi, hello, liquid EVERYTHING), Ilia's Rewind Complexion Stick is anything but dated. Finish-wise, it’s definitely the most matte option from the brand's complexion range, but the ceramide-peptide make up means it still nourishes the skin without feeling greasy – a natural, hydrated matte, if you will. Aka, it's an oily-combo girly's dream.

The formula blends in one swipe and can be built up from a medium to full coverage look. Upon application, your pores will appear non-existent. Blurring at its best.

Ilia claims that their complexion stick will ensure your canvas is intact for up to 12 hours, and I can certainly vouch, having trialled it with many a night out.

Though not many of us left in the revolution that is glowing, glass, glazed doughnut skin, we matte-loving girlies are often pigeon-holed into using full-coverage foundations – I mean, not many skin tints hail a shine-free finish. However, this product allows us to maintain a set base without that heavy skin feeling. Basically, what I'm trying to say is that this is the ultimate everyday foundation for those with an oilier skin type! It hasn't left my makeup bag since the first use, which speaks for itself, IMO.

– Lia Mappoura, Beauty Writer

Glowing customer review: “I use mainly lower coverage face products due to my dry skin. However this is a game changer for me. It blends in seamlessly and looks like skin, not like a full face of foundation. It looks natural on me, not dewy or matte. I tried this with and without primer. With and without setting spray as well as with and without setting powder and a combo of all 3. It held up to all 3 without creasing or settling or caking on my dry skin. You can blend this in with your fingers, a sponge or a brush. To use as concealer with my dry skin I did have to warm it up on the back of hand first (I have to will all though to prevent under eye creases). This is a great complexion product and I highly recommend.”

Best budget foundation for oily skin

Maybelline New York SuperStay Lumi-Matte Foundation

SuperStay Lumi-Matte Foundation

Pros

  • It minimises shine while keeping a fresh, radiant sheen to the skin
  • It doesn't dry out or turn cakey over time

Cons

  • It requires powder to keep it in place, especially on oily skin types

This is a brilliant budget foundation for oily skin. It has all the coverage (hey, medium-full) and lasting power of a classic matte formula, but it still gives the skin a luminous and fresh-faced glow. It almost has a serum-esque texture, so when I pressed the formula into my skin using a damp sponge, it seamlessly blurred pores and left a velvety finish.

I didn’t have it in me to test its 30-hour wear claim – those all-nighters are behind me now; however, it lasted during an 8-hour work day, only requiring some small touch-ups with powder to bring down shine.

– Clare Stephenson, Senior Beauty Ecommerce Writer.

Glowing Customer Review: “The formula is nice, not too thick and doesn’t dry too quickly so you can blend it out. I like the lumi-matte finish, it gives a bit of radiance without looking cakey. A little goes a long way although you can add more to build up coverage.”

Best medium-buildable coverage foundation for oily skin

ROSE INC Softlight Skin-Smoothing Liquid Foundation

Softlight Skin-Smoothing Liquid Foundation

Pros

  • Non-comedogenic formula – will not clog pores, making it suitable for acne-prone skin

Cons

  • Can cling to dry patches (so do remember to moisturise thoroughly before – even those with oily skin!)

Rose Inc's Softlight Foundation? Obsessed. The formula blends like a dream, covers like a filter, and somehow doesn't ghost me by 3pm (unheard of, TBH).

The soft matte finish keeps me looking fresh all day, and it never settles into pores. It’s lightweight yet buildable, giving flawless coverage. Need I say more?

Honestly, it's one of the best foundations I’ve ever used for oily, breakout-prone skin.

Glowing customer review: "I bought this after seeing it on social media and it's one of my favourite foundations ever. It stays all day and makes my skin look so good, would definitely recommend."

Best foundation for oily skin with a fresh finish

L'Oréal Paris Infallible 24hr Freshwear Liquid Foundation

Infallible 24hr Freshwear Liquid Foundation

Pros

  • It's a long-lasting formula
  • It offers full coverage but still feels lightweight to wear
  • It's affordable

Cons

  • Over time it can accentuate texture so be sure to prep with a pore-smoothing primer

If you’re looking for a budget liquid formula, L'Oréal’s Infallible Freshwear foundation is one I always count on. IMO, it’s got the perfect day-to-day finish for oily skin, leaving a semi-matte veil that reduces shine while still giving a healthy glow to my complexion. The liquid beautifully blends in, whether using a brush or blender, and despite it being fuller coverage, the fluid texture absorbs well into the skin, so it’s very comfortable to wear.

Best long-lasting foundation for oily skin

Too Faced Born This Way Soft Matte Foundation

Born This Way Soft Matte Foundation

Pros

  • Non-comedogenic - will not clog pores, making it suitable for acne-prone skin
  • Covers every imperfection – even the most stubborn of blemishes

Cons

  • Can be a bit too thick for some people

Too Faced is on another level when it comes to foundations, and their Soft Matte iteration is no exception. The formula? Silky smooth, oil-free, and somehow doesn’t make me look like a glazed doughnut after just a few hours of wear. The coverage is chef’s kiss – medium to full, buildable, and still lets my skin breathe (thank you, coconut water and alpine rose). The soft matte finish? Matte, but make it alive. Not flat, not cakey – just flawless. And the staying power? Well...

This foundation has seen me through many a traumatic time (the blonde hair is an indicator of said traumatic time). I’ve cried, danced, and sweated through this foundation, and I can confidently say that it does not budge.

Plus, it's also non-comedogenic, so my pores aren’t mad at me for layering on a full beat, either!

Glowing customer review: "I love this foundation, really nice thin formulation but has pigment - reminds me of the nars soft matte foundation which I love also. alittle goes along way, great coverage I have acne prone skin with acne marks which are more dark purple (I have mixed race skin) and find I can get away with 1 layer of foundation and just dab alittle ontop of my dark marks to cover. i wore this foundation with a water based matte primer, no powder and no setting spray and it was really nice and radiant and dewy looking after a few hours I didn’t look oily it wore really beautiful and was long lasting."

Best powder foundation for oily skin

M.A.C Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation

Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation
Now 56% Off

Pros

  • It leaves a light, breathable layer of coverage
  • The finish is very natural

Cons

  • It doesn't provide full coverage – and it can look patchy if you don't blend it enough

There’s been a lot of beauty chat about the reformulation of M.A.C’s Studio Fix Powder. Some say that the iconic powder shouldn’t have been touched, while others are pleased about the new Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation, saying it leaves a soft-focus, smoother finish compared to the OG formula.

IMO, I’m all for the new upgrade, but let me tell you now, this is not for you if you like coverage that will cover acne scars or pigmentation. I’d use this on holiday to dust over a light veil of coverage before dinner. The finish is super natural so it leaves my complexion looking softly diffused, but it can be layered up if you fancy a little more coverage. Just take time fluffing the powder into your skin so it doesn't look patchy.

– Clare Stephenson, Senior Beauty Ecommerce Writer.

Glowing Customer Review: “This powder is my go to for warmer weather foundation! You can build up on the coverage depending on the brush you use, and it seems to set pretty well on my skin! So many skin tone colours to choose from. 10/10.”

Best stick foundation for oily skin

Fenty Beauty Eaze Drop Blur + Smooth Tint Stick

Eaze Drop Blur + Smooth Tint Stick

Pros

  • It's easy to blend and sinks into the skin seamlessly
  • The stick applicator makes it an easy option for travel
  • It lends a natural, second-skin finish

Cons

  • The formula may slip on super-oily skin types

I would have never considered a stick foundation before trying Fenty’s Eaze Drop Tint Stick. I assumed all were thick and cakey, but this lightweight formula proves my theory wrong! It melts into my skin, thanks to murumuru butter, which gives it a creamy feel, and it lends a blurred, second-skin glow to my complexion. The finish isn’t full, but it’s easy to layer as it won’t crease throughout the day. I’m also obsessed with the radiant finish that glows in all the right places, but keeps grease at bay.

Pros

  • It has a very extensive shade range
  • It offers medium, semi-matte coverage while keeping a radiant finish

Cons

  • It can transfer so be sure to set it down with a translucent powder

Day to day, I’m all for lightweight finishes, but I always fancy a flawless base for evenings out. When in need, I go for M.A.C’s Studio Fix Fluid. It has a semi-matte finish that feels more ‘glam’, but it still feels lightweight and doesn’t make my complexion look flat. The lasting power is impressive, too; all I need is a setting powder, a spray, and it’s locked in place for the day.

– Clare Stephenson, Senior Beauty Ecommerce Writer.

What is the best foundation for oily skin?

line break

It’s easy to think that when you have oily skin a matte or powder foundation is your only option, but this doesn’t have to be the case. There’s no one must-have formula when you have oily skin, as now there is a foundation and finish to suit everyone no matter your skin type.

If you love a glowy look, sans the grease, opt for a foundation with a satin finish and make sure you prime and use a setting powder. Or you could opt for a matte finish and add in radiance with a cream highlighter. “If you’re exceptionally oily and your makeup vanishes after a couple hours of wear, I’d recommend an oil-free, long-lasting formula,” says Buster. He recommends Armani’s Luminous Silk or Laura Mercier’s Silk Crème Oil-Free Foundation.

He also says the trick to keeping foundation on all day, especially on oily skin, is how you prep the skin rather than the foundation you use. “Well hydrated, primed skin can allow any skin type to wear a foundation. So I tend to simply use whichever is my favourite foundation at the time, but use an oil-free primer to prep and a good powder,” says Buster.

How should you prep oily skin for foundation?

line break

The right skin prep lays the groundwork for keeping your foundation in place, especially when you have oily skin. “Start by making sure the skin is thoroughly cleansed. I recommend the Cosmetic Consult wipes before glam as they really pull out any impurities and keep oil production at bay,” says Buster.

Even when you have oily skin, you need to keep your hydration topped up, as dehydrated skin can produce even more oil. “Hydrate with a light moisturiser, preferably water based, as this will hydrate but without clogging the pores,” says Buster. ““I then massage in excess skin care and use an oil-free primer to keep oil production at bay,” he adds.

When news broke out in the Cosmo office that I was testing the best foundations for oily skin, Lia Mappoura (Cosmo’s Beauty Writer) jumped into the chat saying: “As a girlie with crazy oily skin who loves foundation, I’m happy to test with you!”

So here, you have two beauty journalists, two greasy faces and a bunch of foundations we can attest work for oily skin. The best ones control shine, offer great coverage without turning cakey and they last throughout the day without fading. We also tested how well they blend, ingredients in the formula and their overall finish – and no, they aren’t all matte.
