If you haven’t been introduced to the best eyebrow tinting kits yet, get ready for me to change your life. Picture this: You’re about to do your makeup, which usually requires eyebrow pencils, brow gels, and positive thoughts. But instead of putting in all that effort, your eyebrows are already done before you even start. Have I got your attention?

Welcome to the magic of eyebrow tinting, where a few minutes with an at-home tinting kit and some detailed instructions will give you semi-permanently dyed brows that can last anywhere from one day to three weeks.

How to apply an at-home eyebrow tint

If you’re used to getting your eyebrows professionally done in a salon, you’ll be pleased to know that achieving a natural-looking tint at home is surprisingly simple. While most kits come with step-by-step instructions, I spoke to Baebrow founder Victoria Singh to get her expert tips on how to apply your tint for a natural finish – without ending up with overly heavy brows.

“Choose a shade that matches your hair or slightly darker,” advices Victoria, noting that this is key to keeping the result soft and believable rather than overly bold. “Then, apply the tint within your natural brow shape. A small angled brush or spoolie will help control placement.”

When it comes to avoiding that blocky finish, she recommends going slow and steady to begin with. “If it's your first time or if you're worried about going too dark, check the colour early – wipe a small section after a few minutes to see how the tint is developing.”

Victoria also emphasises the need to keep things precise, especially if you want a natural result. “Remove any excess product from the skin quickly. This keeps the tint focused on the brow hairs instead of staining the surrounding skin. Focusing on tinting brows rather than skin makes the results more natural,” she explains.

Are at-home eyebrow tints safe to use?

While it might seem like a low-maintenance beauty treatment, it involves the eye area – so safety matters. In the EU, regulations restrict the use of certain ingredients in hair dyes, including eyebrow tints.

As of June 3, 2022, substances such as 1,2,4-trihydroxybenzene, 4-amino-3-hydroxytoluene and 2-[(4-amino-2-nitrophenyl)-amino]-benzoic acid are no longer permitted in cosmetic products. The UK now operates under its own cosmetics regulations post-Brexit, but these rules closely mirror EU standards. This means products sold in the UK are subject to very similar safety restrictions.

Each kit we’ve chosen is as safe a formula as you can find when it comes to DIY’ing your brows at home. Though, it’s important to do a patch test before you apply the formula over your brows.

Got it? Cool, now keep reading for more information and the best way to apply eyebrow tints after you check out the products below.

    Eylure Dyebrow Eyebrow Dye Kit

    On Sale
    Dyebrow Eyebrow Dye Kit

Would it even be an eyebrow tint round-up without including the Eyelure DyeBrow kit? This bb has been a part of my routine for years – and for good reason. The cream only needs 15 minutes of developing time and once wiped away, it leaves a very natural brown pigment with zero red undertones.

It comes with an activating cream, developer gel and spoolie to brush the formula through your brows – although I would appreciate a more detailed brush for more precision – so the kit is easy enough to apply at home. I would suggest applying a moisturiser around your brows to begin with as this formula has a tendency to dye the surrounding skin.

Glowing Customer Review:“Great dye kit! So easy to use, makes my brows look fuller and there's no strong smell which is an added bonus. Would repurchase!”

    L’Oreal Paris Brow Color

    Brow Color

If you ever find yourself in need of a last minute eyebrow tint (you never know!) this L’Oreal Paris Brow Color Kit shows results in as little as five minutes. It’s as easy to use as other tinting kits – simply mix the cream with developer – and then use the spoolie to brush the formula through your hairs.

If you’re after a natural look only keep it on for five minutes before wiping off. But, if like me, you want something a little more defined, leave it for 10-12 minutes. The result is a rich, deep brown that looks like I’ve magically grown more eyebrow hairs overnight.

    Key Specifications:

    Shades:Five
    Formula:Cream
Glowing Customer Review:“It’s an excellent product on a very economical price. I really love the quality and how easy it is to apply. It stays on for a long time and doesn’t look artificial.”

    Best capsule tinting kit

Baebrow ALL CAPS Starter Kit - Powder Henna Capsules

ALL CAPS Starter Kit - Powder Henna Capsules

Baebrow was one of the first brands to create a capsule form of eyebrow tint – and actually, that’s a pretty big deal. While with other kits you have to embrace your inner scientist and measure out your own formula, the Baebrow capsules contain the perfect dose so you know you aren’t wasting anything.

To use, pour all the powder from one of the ALL CAPS capsules into the mixing dish and add 10-15 drops. Stir until everything is combined and then apply an even layer over your arches in the shape you want.

The finish really is one of the most natural I have come across. It gently tints the skin underneath (this lasted around seven days before fading) but my fair hairs remained brown for at least two weeks following application. I used the shade ‘Dark Brown’ and it gave me defined, bold brows that not only defined my face, but made my morning routine 10 times quicker.

    Key Specifications:

    Shades:11
    Formula:Powder capsules
Glowing Customer Review:“This eyebrow tint is the real deal! After I applied it to my brows and removed it, I saw eyebrows I did not know were there! It was a WOW moment. The liquid tint just absorbs into each hair. This will be my go to brow tint from now on! I cannot brag enough about this tint!“

Maybelline New York Tinta Sopracciglia Tattoo Brow Peel-Off

    Tinta Sopracciglia Tattoo Brow Peel-Off
    Now 23% Off

This brow peel-off from Maybelline earns our number one high-street pick because you get all the benefits of a traditional eyebrow tint, but it's totally safe because it's specially made to use on your eyebrows and acts more like a makeup stain rather than a traditional tint (despite its name).

It's also mess-free because there is no DIY mixing required, and you don't need to rinse the tint off your eyebrows after 20 minutes. Just peel off the top layer of dried gel with your clean fingers and, boom – fully tinted brows for your entire weekend.

    Key Specifications:

    Shades:Four

Best eyebrow tinting kit on Amazon

    Ardell Brow Tint

    Brow Tint

With thousands of views, this eyebrow tinting kit is an Amazon favourite for a reason. The colour lasts for a full two weeks, and it takes just a few minutes to do all three steps. Pro tip: For this kit (and really any eyebrow tinting kit), a little bit of Vaseline around the edges of your brows will prevent any staining on your skin – just make sure you don’t get it on your actual brow.

    Key Specifications:

    Shades:Four
    Formula:Powder Mix
Glowing Customer Review:"This is one of the best products I've used! This can be easily applied, leave it on for 10 minutes and your eyebrows look great. Best of all this lasts at least 2 weeks, on my first try the colour lasted almost a month!"

    Best peel-off tint

Rimmel Wonder'Bond Brow Filler Peel-Off Tint

    Wonder'Bond Brow Filler Peel-Off Tint

Sparse brows? Listen up. Thanks to the brush applicator of this peel-off tint, you’re able to precisely fill in your brows to ensure a natural and clean result.

While some kits come with a spoolie, these can be a little too bulky for slimmer or sparser brows, making it harder to get that defined shape. This, on the other hand, gives you much more control. You can map, fill and define exactly where you need it without creating block brows ~ burr.

To use, simply apply a thick coating over your brows – I find using a damp cotton bud is then the best way to shape your arches. Leave the product to dry for 20 minutes and then peel off. Easy.

    Key Specifications:

    Shades:Four
    Formula:Gel
Glowing Customer Review:“Colour was accurate to my natural colour, enhanced my brows without making them too dark and it was easy to apply. Definitely a good product to use in between salon tints.”

    WUNDERBROW Waterproof Eyebrow Gel, Blonde

    Waterproof Eyebrow Gel, Blonde

Rain, showers, and sweat cannot compete against this waterproof eyebrow tint, which goes on like a regular eyebrow gel but stays for up to three days. One reviewer says they showered, washed their face, and, at one point, mindlessly rubbed their eyebrows, and the tint still didn't smear, flake, or budge. I mean, that's freaking great waterproof makeup, IMO.

Air Brow Tinted Volumizing Treatment Gel

If dyeing your eyebrows sounds too intimidating, a tinted brow gel is the next best thing. And even though it’s not semi-permanent like actual eyebrow tinting, it’s still less maintenance than filling in your brows with an eyebrow pencil (although, for bold, va-va-voom brows, start by filling in sparse spots with a pencil and follow up with the gel), and safer than some of the DIY kits.

Best tinted gel for fluffy brows

Em Cosmetics Micro-Fluff Sculpting Brow Cream

    Micro-Fluff Sculpting Brow Cream

Not into the stiff, crunchy brows that some gels give you? Opt for this cream-based formula that coats your brow hairs in pigment while lifting and sculpting them into your desired shape. For a light layer of colour, brush the spoolie through your brow hairs in the direction of the hair growth. And for ultra-fluffy brows, brush the spoolie against the grain of your brows first – wait, hear me out – and then go back in the direction of hair growth with the spoolie. Trust me, it’s one of the eyebrow tricks I live by.

    Key Specifications:

    Shades:Five
    Formula:Cream
Glowing Customer Review:"Been using this eyebrow cream for a couple of years now. It holds hair in place without being stiff/crunchy staying flexible, the perfect amount of product each application. So many things I love about this!"

How do you use eyebrow tinting kits?

You'll need to follow the instructions that come with your kit very carefully (since every kit is a little bit different), but generally, you'll paint the dye across your clean, dry eyebrow in the direction of your hair growth, covering any area you would normally cover with a brow gel or pencil.

Then, after letting the dye sit for anywhere from 20 minutes to overnight, depending on the instructions and how dark you want your brows, you'll either rinse your brows or peel off the hardened dye coating. My advice? Start with letting the dye sit for the shortest amount of time, as advised on your kit, and see how dark they get. You can always apply it again for more colour, but you can't exactly hit the rewind button once that dye is set.

If you want to thread your brows too, Victoria suggests doing this after you have tinted them. “Once all your brows are tinted you might find you have a much fuller brow that you thought. Seeing what you have to work with lets you define the shape you want rather than be restricted by a sparser ‘before’ brow,” she says.

How long does an eyebrow tint last when done at home?

Truthfully, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. According to Victoria, how long an at-home tint lasts depends on a few factors. “Usually you can expect the tint to last around three to six weeks on brow hairs and a few days on the skin. However this all depends on on your hair and skin type,” she says.

Victoria also notes that your skincare routine plays a role. Using exfoliating acids, retinol or spending lots of time in the sun can all cause the tint to fade more quickly.

Can you remove eyebrow tint if it goes wrong?

If you’re a tinting newbie, you’ll be pleased to know that mistakes can easily be corrected – so there’s no need to panic if you go a little heavy handed.

“You can remove the skin tint fairly easily with an oily or stronger cleanser and cloth,” says Victoria. “Gentle exfoliation will also help.”

That said, tint on the hairs themselves are a little more stubborn. “The hair part can also be faded quicker with cleansing products or exfoliation, but it will take longer,” she explains, adding that the intensity will naturally soften over time.

Her biggest tip? Go slowly from the start. “You should check the colour early if you’re doing it for the first time to avoid going too dark.”

How to choose the best eyebrow tinting kit:

Ensure it's safe for your eye area

When it comes to using any kind of dye, you want to make sure you’re getting the safest formula with the longest-lasting results – a tall order when every kit on Google claims to be the very best. First things first: Make sure the kit is actually made for eyebrows. As in, don't think you can just sub in your at-home box dye because "hair is hair." Nope. As Malynda Vigliotti of Boom Boom Brow Bar in New York City has previously told Cosmopolitan, hair dye contains ammonia, which is dangerous for your eyes and the sensitive skin around them. Instead, eyebrow tinting kits tend to be made with natural, vegetable-based formulas.

    The fewer steps, the better

Instead of experimenting with a 12-piece tinting kit that makes you feel like a mad scientist, go for the low-stress kits that come with just a dye, an activator, and a few tools for application, or try the peel-off formulas that just require painting over your brows, letting them dry, and then gently peeling off the coating. Or, if you just want to test out some temporary one-day tints, go for a wash-off brow gel or coloured brow wax.
