18 of the best setting powders for makeup that lasts all day – tried, tested with pictures

Your midday oil attack has officially met its match

By , and
best setting powders

No matter your skin type, a setting powder is a staple product everyone should keep in their makeup bag. Designed to control shine, prevent creasing and lock makeup in place all day, it’s what makeup artist Tayaba Jafri calls “one of the oldest makeup tricks in the book.” It’s why celebrity MUAs rely on it backstage and on the red carpet to keep A-list makeup looking flawless under flashing cameras and bright lights.

Why take the time to put on a full face of foundation, concealer, and bronzer if it’s just going to fade away in a few hours? Exactly. A truly great setting powder keeps everything fresh and seamless, so your makeup looks just as good at 7pm as it did when you first applied it.

So how do they work? Setting powders contain ingredients that "lock" liquid and cream formulas to your face to help extend wear time. I’ve personally tested 30+ setting powders in the last six months to find the best for my skin type and makeup. With the help of Jafri and makeup artist Tobi Henney, I’ve handpicked every setting powder that gets the Cosmopolitan UK seal of approval.

Keep reading to find the best setting powder for your skin type, along with the difference between setting powder, finishing powder, and powder foundation at the end.

Best budget setting powder

Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder

Stay Matte Pressed Powder

Pros

  • It removes excess shine without turning cakey
  • It’s an affordable option
  • It can add very sheer coverage when layered up

Cons

  • The shade range is limited

Rimmel’s Stay Matte Pressed Powder has had icon-status in many makeup bags over the past decade, and for great reason. This budget bb has been around for years, loved for its ability to nix shine and softly mattify, without leaving a dusty finish – oh, and all for the price of £4.99.

A few sweeps is all that’s needed to blur and smooth, and it also does an impressive job at keeping makeup in place all day, especially on oily-prone complexions.

Best powder for glow

e.l.f. Halo Glow Powder

Halo Glow Powder

Pros

  • Reduces shine while still ensuring a radiant finish
  • It’s a budget option
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • Those with oily skin may want something with a matte finish

If you are someone who cannot not set your cream and liquid makeup for fear of it either melting away or creasing (no bc same), but is still after a natural glowy base, look no further than to e.l.f.’s Halo Glow Powder Filter.

The pressed formula allows for a light (yet buildable) touch that in just a sweep of a bush, blurs the appearance of skin, reduces shine and sets makeup. However, because it is so light, it doesn't cake on the face and instead, retains skin luminosity. Pair it with the Halo Glow Liquid Filter for an IRL-filtered base.

Key Specifications:

Type:Pressed powder
Finish:Glowy, with a soft focus finish
Shades:12, with varying cool, neutral and warm undertones.

Best powder for oily skin

Huda Beauty Easy Bake Pressed

Easy Bake Pressed

Pros

  • It creates an airbrush-like finish by reducing the apperance of pores
  • Certain shades can be used for colour correction
  • It leaves a smooth, matte finish
  • It’s talc free

Cons

  • It may feel too much for those with super-dry skin – as every ingredient is designed to soak up oil

I swear I’ve been using the Huda Beauty Loose Powder since the beginning of time. Okay, well since it set the standard for baking back in 2016. So as a loyal lover, you could say I was a little sceptical using this pressed iteration – especially as it already launched back in 2023 and the response was, well, questionable.

So, what’s new? It has now re-launched to deliver matte finish and the ingredient’s list has been refreshed, with rice starch used to absorb excess oil. It also has a ‘micronized’ formula which means you can layer up the powder without it turning cakey.

I’d certainly say the formula is catered to those with oil complexions. With just a few taps it blurred shiny zones and reduced the look of fine lines and wrinkles.

The real test came throughout the day. While initially it smoothed texture, over time it attached to dry zones, emphasising my point that it’s best for oily skin types.

Best talc-free setting powder

Kosas Cloud Set Baked Setting & Smoothing Powder

Cloud Set Baked Setting & Smoothing Powder

Pros

  • It's talc-free and very lightweight
  • It sets makeup without reducing a radiant glow
  • It gives a smooth and blurred apperance

Cons

  • It's expensive

If you don’t like the chalky, heavy feeling of loose powder, try Kosas’s talc-free pressed powder. It’s so lightweight you can barely feel it on your face, even though it leaves behind a satin, skin-like finish. FYI: Hailey Bieber swears by this setting powder to lock her makeup in place without ruining her signature “glazed donut skin” glow. And I, too, would like to have Hailey Bieber’s skin, so pls give me three.

Best pressed setting powder

Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish

Airbrush Flawless Finish

Pros

  • It blurs the appearance of pores and smooths texture
  • It doesn't feel too heavy and doesn't turn cakey

Cons

  • It has a limited shade range

As much as I love the weightless feel of a loose setting powder, sometimes I need something with a little extra coverage to smooth out my textured skin – and that’s where this GOAT pressed powder from Charlotte Tilbury comes in. It has a ~smidge~ of tinted coverage that helps even out your makeup and skin tone without looking heavy or obvious, thanks to its super-fine consistency. The result is incredibly even-looking makeup that legit lasts.

Best matte setting powder

Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder

Translucent Loose Setting Powder

Pros

  • It has a finely milled texture that disappears on the skin
  • It smooths pores, fine lines and texture while knocking back shine

Cons

  • It has a limited shade range
  • It's expensive

No roundup of the best setting powders would be complete without the mention of the iconic Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder. You’ll find this in the makeup bags of celebrities (*cough cough* Victoria Beckham and Molly-Mae Hague), makeup artists, and editors alike.

Why? It has a fine, airy texture that feels light on your skin while giving you a smooth, blurred, matte finish. To really nix shine, Jafri recommends pressing the powder into your skin with a powder puff instead of brushing it on, which “creates a sweeping motion and moves the product around.” Instead she says that “pressing the powder into the skin results in long-lasting makeup.”

Best celeb-owned setting powder

Kylie Cosmetics Setting Powder

Setting Powder

Pros

  • It leaves a soft-matte finish without being dry or cakey
  • It blurs pores and texture
  • Only a small amount is needed to lock makeup in place

Cons

  • Those with very oily skin may find this doesn't provide enough shine control after hours of wear

Call me sceptical when it comes to celeb-founded beauty products — but Kylie’s Setting Powder proves me wrong. This offers everything I need from a setting powder: it’s incredibly lightweight, smooths pores without looking cakey, cuts back shine while still looking radiant and keeps my makeup on all day without fading.

Following on from that last point, it really does a stellar job at locking my makeup in place alll day – and coming from someone with combination skin who turns into a greaseball by 4pm, that’s saying something. A very small amount is needed to dust over your complexion, so this £24 tub will last.

Best brightening setting powder

Huda Beauty Easy Bake Loose Baking & Setting Powder

Easy Bake Loose Baking & Setting Powder

Pros

  • Gives a smooth, brightening finish
  • Depending on the shade you opt for, it can be used to brighten under eyes
  • Locks makeup in place and reduces texture

Cons

  • Some may not like the scent
  • On dry skin it can turn a little patchy

I didn’t believe the hype with this brightening, pink-toned powder for a long time. But I’m eating my words now, as I sit here looking like I got the best eight hours of rest when I actually took a four-hour red-eye flight next to a screaming baby. The rosy pigments counteract the dark tones under my eyes to disguise them a little bit, even without a full-coverage under-eye concealer. And on the days that I need some extra help, I can dab it on with a sponge, and it smooths out my skin to slightly create an illusion that my under-eye bags are a bit flatter.

Best blurring loose powder

ONE/SIZE Ultimate Blurring Setting Powder

Ultimate Blurring Setting Powder

Pros

  • It controls shine but without looking dry or cakey
  • It smooths pores and creates a blurred result
  • The tub contains 34.5g of product

Cons

  • It's expensive

This very nearly went into my giveaway pile, but thank goodness I held onto it as it has changed my makeup game for the better. This is a very fine setting powder so a light dusting is all that’s needed to blur pores and set makeup in place.

The shade translucent is designed to be a universal shade as it doesn’t provide any coverage, but delivers a soft-focus matte finish while absorbs excess shine. And just because it’s matte doesn’t mean it’s flat – it controls oily zones around my nose, cheeks and forehead while still keeping a radiant, healthy glow to my complexion. And while the price tag may seem steep, this is a mighty 34.5g so the tub will last.

Best lightweight powder

NARS Light Reflecting Pressed Setting Powder

Light Reflecting Pressed Setting Powder

Pros

  • Makes skin look smooth and pore-less IRL and in photos
  • It’s super lightweight
  • Leaves a soft focus, radiant finish to the skin

Cons

  • Those with oily skin may find it too lightweight

So lightweight you can barely see it, the NARS Light Reflecting Pressed Setting Powder has to be one of the most finely-milled powders I’ve come across – making it a great option for those with dry skin.

While there are four shades available, it seems only Crystal – a translucent – is widely available atm. However out of the four, this one is definitely the most flexible.

Near enough invisible, it layers on a super-fine dusting to lock down makeup and reduce shine, but it still keeps a healthy radiance to the skin – ideal if you have a dry complexion. Cleverly, it uses photochromatic technology (which essentially darkens on exposure to light) so you’ll never be caught out by a dreaded flash-back on photos.

Best blotting powder

Fenty Beauty Invisimatte Instant Setting and Blotting Powder

Invisimatte Instant Setting and Blotting Powder

Pros

  • It visibly smooths pores and reduces excess shine
  • It feels lightweight and non-cakey on the skin
  • It’s refillable

Cons

  • Those after coverage too won’t find that with this formula

Cast your mind back to the 2023 Superbowl and you may recognise this bb, having its moment when Rhianna, mid way through her performance, blotted her face using the Invisimatte Instant Setting and Blotting Powder.

We all know that an oil-absorbing blotting powder is an essential to reduce shine and keep makeup locked in place – but even more so when you’re dancing on stage in the face of blinding lights. So the fact that Riri’s makeup still looked 10/10 after her performance just shows how well this powder blots away excess oil and shine, leaving an invisible-matte finish with zero flashback.

Best setting powder for fine lines

Haus Labs Bio-Blurring Talc-Free Loose Setting Powder

Pros

  • It doesn't contain any talc, which some may prefer
  • It lends a soft-focus finish while still appearing radiant
  • It doesn't settle into fine lines

Cons

  • It's expensive

Legit, this powder feels like actual silk when you pat it into your skin, which is how it creates a velvet-y-smooth finish on your skin. So don’t worry about it highlighting or settling into fine lines, forehead wrinkles, or skin texture.

Just be sure to press the powder into your skin with a puff or brush instead of dusting for that blurred effect.

Best setting powder for a radiant finish

Saie Airset Radiant Loose Setting Powder

Pros

  • It locks makeup in place while keeping a healthy, radiant finish to your makeup
  • It doesn't cling onto dry patches

Cons

  • Those with oily skin will find it too radiant to control shiny zones

A powder that makes your skin look glowy, not flat? YUP, Saie’s clean loose setting powder is filled with itsy-bitsy flecks of mica (ethically sourced!) that give a bit of radiance back to your skin, which makes it look surprisingly seamless and natural. Plus, it’s made with hydrating squalane, which won’t moisturise your skin like a face cream or facial oil would, but it will help keep the naturally drying silica from clinging to any dry patches you might have.

Best blurring pressed powder

IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores Pressed

Pros

  • It has a natural, matte finish that doesn't appear too flat
  • It sets makeup in place while smoothing the look of pores and texture to give an airbrushed finish

Cons

  • It's expensive
  • It has a limited shade range

True story: When I became a beauty editor, I gifted this smoothing powder to my mom as repayment for all the times I ~borrowed~ it from her makeup bag. She’s got an oily T-zones with prominent pores (especially with all those dewy skin tints I’ve made her test with me), and this powder sets down her makeup and eliminates shine without emphasising her pores or uneven texture. TBH, my mum’s skin is so smooth, she gets mistaken for my sister now at 52 more than she did 10 years ago.

Best lightweight setting powder

Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder by Hourglass

Pros

  • It’s a very fine and lightweight powder that instantly dissolves into the skin
  • It reduces shine while keeping a natural, second-skin finish
  • The smooth finish helps reduce the look of pores, creases and fine lines

Cons

  • It's very expensive

TBH, this is the powder for people who think they hate powder. It was my starter-powder a few months ago (and look at me now!), because it feels and looks like absolutely nothing on my skin.

It helps tone down excess shine without fully mattifying the dewy finish from my creamy concealers and blushes, helping me keep my ~lit-from-within~ glow.

I just sweep it all over my skin with a big, fluffy brush, and then, with a smaller brush, layer a bit more over oil-prone areas, like around my nose and over my T-zone.

Best loose powder for oily skin

Fenty Pro Filt'r Instant Retouch Setting Powder

Pros

  • It has a very fine, silky texture that blends into the skin seamlessly
  • It leaves a matte finish and provides shine control, without dulling radiance

Cons

  • Those with dehydrated skin may find that it can accentuate dry patches

Ever since my skin turned on me and became as greasy as a teenage boy’s, I always have this setting powder nearby to mattify my skin (no joke; looking at it right now). It’s full of talc, silica, and dimethicone, which makes my skin look luxe, smooth, and velvety. Just a lil tip tho: If you’re not ready to commit to a full-size version yet, grab the mini. You only need a light dusting across your entire face, so you’ll def be able to make it last a while.

Best waterproof setting powder

Urban Decay All Nighter Waterproof Setting Powder

Pros

  • It does a stellar job at locking in makeup all day, plus it’s heat and humidity proof
  • It reduces shine and offers oil control throughout the day

Cons

  • One ‘translucent' shade isn't universal enough

If you’re dealing with heat and humidity (hi, my underground train commute), dust this water-resistant powder over your skin, and you won’t have to worry about your makeup sliding or running. You’ll get a satin, skin-like finish wherever you pat it on without your skin feeling dry and heavy. And trust me: It bloody lasts – like, reviewers say this kept their makeup looking fresh for 12+ hours.

Pros

  • Certain shades can be used to brighten the under eyes and counteract dullness
  • It contains clay minerals which help oil control
  • It has a very wide range of shades

Cons

  • It can settle into fine lines if skin isn't prepped properly

Spending hours late-night scrolling on TikTok 🤝 Me using this under-eye powder to solve all my problems.

Since I discovered P.Louise's Under-Eye Brightening Powder, not a day has gone by where I don't use it – yes, my eye-bag situation is truly severe sometimes. I pair it with a lighter-than-skin-tone concealer and the combo helps to brighten and awaken my eyes.

I also appreciate how finely milled it is, so it seamlessly presses into the skin without looking like I'm wearing making. It offers a little coverage too, so I often use it to set the concealer hiding my acne scaring – cause I pick my spots too. Don't come at me!

What is setting powder?

“Setting powder helps keep your makeup from moving and does exactly what it says: sets it in place,” says makeup artist Tobi Henney. “You should use it on top of cream and liquid products, like foundation and concealer, because it can eliminate shine.”

These powders can be loose or pressed and are usually translucent or in a few extremely light coverage shades that come in natural, luminous, and matte finishes. Consider it like swiping a top coat on your nails after painting them.

line break

What’s the difference between setting powder and finishing powder?

No, setting powder and finishing powder are not the same thing, and yes, using the incorrect formula can seriously mess with the results you’re trying to get. Here’s the general breakdown:

  • Setting powder: Medium-weight formula without coverage for setting and prolonging makeup
  • Finishing powder: Lightest formula with no coverage that is dusted over your skin as the final step in your makeup routine to blend everything together and sometimes add a glow
  • Powder foundation: Densest formula with coverage meant to even skin tone and replace liquid foundation (not meant to be used as a setting powder)

“One of the biggest mistakes I see is people using powder foundation to ‘set’ their base foundation,” says makeup artist Tayaba Jafri, “which can add a heavy layer to your skin and look cakey or dry.” Basically, powder foundation is foundation; it’s not meant to be used as a topper. But if you’re trying to keep your makeup matte and locked in place? Reach for setting powder. And if you want to save your shiny glow but “blur” your skin, finishing powder will be your BFF.
