6 best lightweight hair masks for fine and thin hair that hydrate and boost shine without weighing it down

Get healthier hair without the heaviness!

By

As someone with thin and colour-treated (okay, damaged) hair, I used to have a ‘pick a struggle’ approach to haircare. Whenever it felt especially dehydrated, brittle and prone to breakage, I wanted to lather on a heavy-duty hair mask to make amends. But when deep hydration came from thick, dense formulas that weighed my thin hair down, it was left looking glossy, but flatter than ever.

On the other hand, when I regularly packed on volume-boosting sprays and mousses, my poor strands found themselves in need of some extra TLC and hydration. Frankly, it was a vicious circle.

Instead of continuing to sacrifice one struggle for another, I made it my mission to discover the best – and most lightweight – hair masks. It’s taken a lot of trial and error, but thankfully, modern formulas are as weightless as they are nourishing, and can revive lacklustre hair in a matter of minutes.

What should you look for in a hair mask?

"When you’ve got fine or thin hair, look for lightweight, moisture-focused ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, panthenol (vitamin B5), and lighter oils such as argan or jojoba," recommends Neale Rodger, STIL Salon's style director. Rodger adds that proteins can also be helpful, but should be used in moderation, as they run the risk of stiffening hair, rather than softening it.

How often should you use a hair mask?

Typically, fine hair doesn’t require masking as frequently as thicker hair types. Rodger says that once a week is usually plenty, though this can vary depending on how dry or damaged your hair is. "If it's very fine, you might even find that using a mask every 10-14 days works better."

"It’s really about watching how your hair responds – if it starts feeling heavy or flat, scale back slightly until you hit that sweet spot," adds Roger.

There's no gatekeeping around here! So ahead, find 6 of our favourite masks for fine and thin hair girlies.

KEVIN.MURPHY ANGEL.MASQUE

ANGEL.MASQUE

As far as formulas go, KEVIN.MURPHY's might just take the cake. Instead of offering surface-level shine and calling it a day, this lightweight mask is designed to repair (thanks to bamboo extract) and strengthen (hey, quinoa proteins!) the hair follicles from within.

The texture is silky rather than creamy, so there's no risk of adding unnecessary weight. Hannah Akerman, educator for the brand, recommends using this mask once a week to see "a huge improvement in the density and texture of your hair".

OUAI Fine-Medium Hair Treatment Masque

Fine-Medium Hair Treatment Masque

Senior beauty ecommerce writer Clare swears by this hero mask for fine and thin hair types; by infusing shea butter and keratin, OUAI delivers smoother, stronger hair across the board.

"This hair treatment will completely improve the appearance of split ends, reverse damage from heat styling and give your fine hair unreal swoosh and shine," she says.

Olaplex Weightless Nourishing Mask

Weightless Nourishing Mask

If we're talking seriously impressive, results-giving haircare, Olaplex is an OG for a reason. And this mask only needs to be left on for five minutes post-shampooing to work its magic.

While a volume boost complex reduces frizz and breakage, Olaplex's biomimetic cuticle technology seals hydration into the hair cuticles. Even better, you can even use this in place of a conditioner; less product on your lengths means less weight on thin hair.

Davines NouNou Nourishing Repair Mask

NouNou Nourishing Repair Mask

If you've got a little extra time on your hands (10-15 minutes, to be exact), I seriously recommend giving the NouNou mask a try. It's enriched with ultra-nourishing vitamin E, making it ideal for dry (or bleached) hair in need of deep hydration and softer strands.

Pureology Hydrate Superfood Deep Treatment Mask

Hydrate Superfood Deep Treatment Mask

I love my signature red hair, but it does mean I've had to incorporate colour-protecting formulas into my haircare routine. Pureology are experts at the colour-preserving part, but this proves they also deserve some praise for their 10/10 masks.

This one blends goji berry extract (which aids moisture), olive oil (for conditioning) and coconut oil (for both, and a cleaner-than-clean scent). If you prefer your products silicone-free, look no further.

Garnier Ultimate Blends Banana Hair Food

Ultimate Blends Banana Hair Food
Now 50% Off

Beside how great the price is (I've spent more on an average pint in London), my favourite thing about the TikTok-approved Hair Food is that it can be used as a leave-in.

Pro tip: use this instead of a gel to slick back your hair, and give your hair a little love on greasier days. A little goes a long way (I only use a coin-sized amount for mid-length hair), so one tub will last you months, too.
