My scalp and I have been through some trials and tribulations, from scalp eczema to oily skin and roots to scalp acne. So when I started dealing with flakes and itching – the hallmark sign of dandruff – I sighed, bought a few dandruff shampoos, and got to work on my treatment plan.
As a reminder, dandruff (aka seborrheic dermatitis) is caused by an overgrowth of Malassezia, a fungus that’s naturally found on everyone’s skin, says dermatologist Marisa Garshick. And, thankfully, it’s also pretty easy to treat at home with a medicated, anti-fungal dandruff shampoo that uses a mix of moisturisers and anti-inflammatories to soothe itch and irritation.
