A change in season signals a change in hair colour: we don't make the rules, that's just how it goes. After a long summer of bleaching the hell out of our strands, it's time to give our hair a well-deserved break.

But what should you do? If you've had the same hair colour for a while now, you're probably not sure how to switch up your strands. That's ok. First, think about the tone you want. Choosing the right tone really is vital to nailing the perfect hair colour for you. If you've never done this before, don't stress it's very easy.

The first thing you need to do is take a look at your skin tone and figure out exactly what your undertones are. For example, two people with olive skin can have completely different undertones. One might be red and the other might be yellow. If you're not sure what undertone you are it is a good idea to look at the description of your foundation shade because this will usually tell you. Next, look at the colours in your eyes. If you have brown or gold specks in your eyes your undertones will be warm, greens or blues indicate cooler tones.

Once you've worked these two out, you should then think about how you want to emphasise these tones. In a nutshell, warmer skin tones look incredible with warmer hues, like honey, caramel, cinnamon, golden-brown, and chestnut. Cooler skin tones will look beaut with cooler colours like ashy blondes, cool browns and blacks.

Can't bear the thought of saying goodbye to your blonde for good? That's ok? You can still stay light without going for the full blonde finish. Rather than having a whole head of bleach, try highlights or balayage instead. Your hair will be in better condition and you'll still have the lighter colour.

Now, go forth and browse our edit of the best hair colours for winter...
