The bob is the haircut equivalent of a perfectly cut blazer: it's been around forever, never dates, and somehow, makes everything else feel more polished. Which explains why so many of us keep circling back to it – even if we harbour a quiet fear that, on fine hair, it might fall a little… flat.

But according to Andy Heasman, International Creative Director at Rush Hair, the bob is actually one of the best cuts for creating the illusion of thicker hair – provided one clever detail is worked into the shape.

"Big, voluminous hair is at the forefront for this season's trend forecast," he says, "but this style isn't just reserved for long hair and creating big, bouncy blow dries – those with bobs can get involved too."

In fact, the classic cut already has a head start. "Possibly the most versatile classic cut, the bob gives the illusion of naturally thicker hair," Andy explains. The challenge, however, is achieving that airy, relaxed volume with shorter lengths, which can sometimes feel stubbornly resistant to lift.

The trick? It all lies in the ends. Quite literally.

"When it comes to styling, texture and movement are the main focal points," he says. "Blending long layers throughout and adding feathered ends will inject movement and depth into the cut."

Feathering might sound subtle, but that's precisely the point. Rather than leaving the hair blunt and heavy, which can cause fine strands to sit flat, feathered ends soften the shape and create tiny pockets of movement. The result is a bob that looks lighter, fuller and far more dynamic, embodying that effortless, slightly undone finish everyone is after.

Of course, the cut does half the work, and the styling does the rest. To bring out that lift, Andy recommends blow-drying with a medium-sized round brush. "Focus the heat at the root to lift the hair," he advises, pairing the technique with a volumising mousse to enhance the appearance of the long layers and amplify that big, bouncy effect.

And if you want to dial up the dimension even further, a fringe can help tie everything together. "If you’re looking for extra dimension, a face-framing fringe will beautifully harmonise the elements of this look," says Andy.

That's all to say: big hair isn't reserved for Rapunzel lengths. With feathered ends and a thoughtfully cut bob, even fine hair can appear fuller, lighter and noticeably more voluminous!
