Pheromone perfumes are the secret to “you smell amazing” compliments: 6 scents to try now

Science is pretty wild!

By

Just like The All American Rejects, I – and the world of fragrance – have a dirty little secret... pheromone perfumes! They're specialised, often musk-based scents that are designed to enhance your natural body chemistry, which, in theory, should make you more sexually attractive. Interest piqued? Yep, I thought so.

Now, while I'm firmly in the camp of wearing a perfume that you love (not what you think will make strangers weak at the knees), there's something undeniably intriguing about a perfume that works with you. Inspired by the science of pheromones – those invisible chemicals linked to attraction – the below scents lean into subtle, skin-like allure, without bottling sweat (thank God).

But first, some facts – because the world of science has really good scent chemistry...

What are pheromones?

"Pheromones are a form of biological, nonverbal communication," board-certified dermatologist Karan Lal previously told Cosmopolitan. "These are scents that come from bodily fluids – like sweat, urine, and breast milk in humans – that are excreted out of the body and involuntarily evoke a certain response in members of the same species," he explains.

In some animal species, pheromones act as warning signals to predators, while in others they play a role in attraction. That's partly why everyone has their own distinctive natural scent. So, if you find your partner particularly sexy post-workout, it could be because sweat releases chemical signals that some people subconsciously associate with attraction. Vabbing is another 'dating trend' to note, rooted in the same idea; it's the practice of dabbing vaginal fluids onto pulse points like a natural perfume... Which would also explain the niche market for buying and selling worn underwear... Science is wild, huh?

Pheromone perfume, however, isn't literally bottling bodily fluids (cue the collective sigh of relief). Instead, the idea is to create a perfume filled with essential oils that are meant to work with your natural scent chemistry and either recreate or enhance your body's pheromones. And as previously mentioned, this should, in theory, make you more sexually attractive.

Do pheromone perfumes work?

That all said, although there is science to prove that pheromones clearly influence behaviour in animals, it's not established that humans have a biological system that processes pheromones in the same way. According to the National Library of Medicine, "further study is required to validate these conclusions before any commercial claim of the ‘arousing’ activity of androstadienone can be endorsed scientifically."

The Cosmopolitan Beauty Team, however, have tried and tested hundreds (and I mean hundreds) of perfumes, many formulations of which have been designed with specific oil combinations to complement and enhance your natural body chemistry – rather than masking it.

And with years of spritzing and many "you smell amazing" compliments later, these are the six that we truly believe work. Personal allure? Yeah, we've got it in abundance... humble brag.

Pure Instinct Pheromone Unisex Perfume Oil

Pheromone Unisex Perfume Oil
Now 50% Off

Back in 2021, Pure Instinct's Pheromone Unisex Perfume Oil blew up on TikTok and was promptly crowned "the best perfume ever" (the internet is nothing if not decisive). It's claim to fame? Synthetic pheromones that react with your body and smell different on everyone.

On Beth Gillette, Cosmo US's Beauty Editor, results were... fine; On thousands of social media users, however, it was borderline witchcraft. We're talking compliments, obsession and even strangers leaning in.

Consider me curious, and this, your official invitation to flirt with fate, caution and a little hope.

Glowing customer review: "Love the smell of this. Makes me feel more confident, obviously that could just be a placebo but either way I'm happy! Wish the little bottle was 5 times the size but it should still last a while. Not sure if it smells the same for everyone but to me it smells sweet but not sickly, like honey mixed with fruity sweets. Love it so much"

D.S. & DURGA I Don't Know What

I Don't Know What

While it's not laced with pheromones, D.S. & DURGA's I Don't Know What has a transparent and airy scent that can be combined with others – including your very own bodily aroma – making for a total compliment magnet.

How? Well, it uses "molecular" ingredients that cling to your skin instead of sitting on top of it. These molecules bind to your natural oils/the oils of other perfumes, basically locking scent to you rather than floating off into the room.

It's uniquely modern and perfect for those who enjoy mixing and matching perfume notes. When mum says we have an olfactory laboratory at home...

Glowing customer review: "I got a sample of this and I don't think l've ever used a sample so much! I straight away was very drawn to the scent it's very strong and fresh but also fruity and musky. I found that if I layered it with my other perfumes I got a stronger different scent each time. I've contemplated buying this now and I have added this to my birthday list! It's a really gorgeous pertume and surprisingly really really lovely."

Mojo Pro Attract Men Pheromone Spray 3ml

Attract Men Pheromone Spray 3ml

Sold on Lovehoney, this Attract Men Pheromone Spray is a tiny 3ml pheromone-infused spritz by Mojo Pro (more of a sex/attraction brand rather than any perfume house).

It promises to harness "natural human pheromones" to make men take notice, and while the fresh scent won't overpower your favourite fragrance (because yes, it can be layered!), results really do vary from person to person. Think of it as an intriguing party trick rather than a guaranteed love potion.

Glowing customer review: "Got this as an add on to get free shipping, but honestly. . . I was floored by how well it worked. Within moments he was all over me, couldn't stop saying how good I smelled. I was actually trying to cook dinner at the time but he couldn't stop kissing my neck, so be wary about when you apply it or you might end up with burnt food :)"

Escentric Molecules Molecule 01 is famously just one ingredient – Iso E Super – but somehow it feels like emotional alchemy. It melts into skin, fusing with natural oils to create a soft, woody aura that smells more like someone than something. My auntie wears this, and every time she does, I instantly feel at home. I, actually, love it on her way more than on myself – it smells warmer, safer, familiar.

As scent science explains, "A lot of these attractions come from olfactory memory," says Dr. Lal. "Essentially, when we are exposed early in life to certain scents, we recognise them and our brain retains this memory," he explains. That's why one note can feel comforting to some and overwhelming to others – your nose remembers before you do!

Glowing customer review: "This is the most essential part of my scent wardrobe. It works it's magic both alone and when layered with other fragrances. I can hardly smell it on myself, but when I can, it smells woody and slightly spicy. I know that others can smell it on me, because I get complemented constantly when I wear it. From my experience, it smells different on everyone. Like I mentioned above, it is woody/spicy on me, but it smells sweet on my best friend, slightly musky on my boyfriend, and like nothing on my mom."

Venom Pheromone Perfume Collection

Pheromone Perfume Collection

Like Pure Instinct and Mojo Pro, the Venom Pheromone Perfume Collection isn't created by a legacy perfume house. Instead, it's the signature scent line from Venom Scents, a brand built around pheromone-infused fragrances that claim to "amplify your natural chemistry" rather than just mask it with florals and musk.

The idea is part perfume, part social experiment: subtle base notes meet woody-amber aroma chemical formulas designed to make you memorable.

Glowing customer review: "The first night I wore it, my boyfriend asked what l'd done differently. It's become our date-night ritual now."

PHLUR Missing Person Eau de Parfum 50ml

Missing Person Eau de Parfum 50ml

Just like the D.S. & Durga and Eccentric Molecules scents mentioned, PHLUR's Missing Person works by bonding its aroma molecules with your skin's natural oils. Unlike heavier perfumes that sit on top, this one becomes part of you – whether soft and spicy or warm and woody – so it interacts with your unique chemistry – pH, temperature, and even diet!

Like previously mentioned, a lot of these attractions come from olfactory memory, and this is one your brain may have retained. That's why it smells slightly different on everyone and is reminiscent of your "missing person"... Get it?

Quietly magnetic and smartly composed.

Glowing customer review: "I get the most compliments when I wear this scent, even tho it’s slightly more expensive then other brands I’d say it’s well worth the money, I consider this a more luxury fragrance as it’s so long lasting and you don’t need a lot of it at all, I repurchased this as a gift for my mum for Mother’s Day as she fell in love with it!"
