Pheromone perfumes are the secret to “you smell amazing” compliments: 6 scents to try now
Science is pretty wild!
Just like The All American Rejects, I – and the world of fragrance – have a dirty little secret... pheromone perfumes! They're specialised, often musk-based scents that are designed to enhance your natural body chemistry, which, in theory, should make you more sexually attractive. Interest piqued? Yep, I thought so.
Now, while I'm firmly in the camp of wearing a perfume that you love (not what you think will make strangers weak at the knees), there's something undeniably intriguing about a perfume that works with you. Inspired by the science of pheromones – those invisible chemicals linked to attraction – the below scents lean into subtle, skin-like allure, without bottling sweat (thank God).
But first, some facts – because the world of science has really good scent chemistry...
What are pheromones?
"Pheromones are a form of biological, nonverbal communication," board-certified dermatologist Karan Lal previously told Cosmopolitan. "These are scents that come from bodily fluids – like sweat, urine, and breast milk in humans – that are excreted out of the body and involuntarily evoke a certain response in members of the same species," he explains.
In some animal species, pheromones act as warning signals to predators, while in others they play a role in attraction. That's partly why everyone has their own distinctive natural scent. So, if you find your partner particularly sexy post-workout, it could be because sweat releases chemical signals that some people subconsciously associate with attraction. Vabbing is another 'dating trend' to note, rooted in the same idea; it's the practice of dabbing vaginal fluids onto pulse points like a natural perfume... Which would also explain the niche market for buying and selling worn underwear... Science is wild, huh?
Pheromone perfume, however, isn't literally bottling bodily fluids (cue the collective sigh of relief). Instead, the idea is to create a perfume filled with essential oils that are meant to work with your natural scent chemistry and either recreate or enhance your body's pheromones. And as previously mentioned, this should, in theory, make you more sexually attractive.
Do pheromone perfumes work?
That all said, although there is science to prove that pheromones clearly influence behaviour in animals, it's not established that humans have a biological system that processes pheromones in the same way. According to the National Library of Medicine, "further study is required to validate these conclusions before any commercial claim of the ‘arousing’ activity of androstadienone can be endorsed scientifically."
The Cosmopolitan Beauty Team, however, have tried and tested hundreds (and I mean hundreds) of perfumes, many formulations of which have been designed with specific oil combinations to complement and enhance your natural body chemistry – rather than masking it.
And with years of spritzing and many "you smell amazing" compliments later, these are the six that we truly believe work. Personal allure? Yeah, we've got it in abundance... humble brag.
