How 12 celebs handle blemishes and breakouts

From gentle cleansing to not really caring.

By

Acne happens to pretty much everyone at some point, celebrities included. Here's how 11 stars deal with skin issues, from gentle cleansing to not really caring.

1

Karlie Kloss

The gravest skin sin is to pop your own spots, but even supermodels can't resist. "This really annoying pimple popped up this weekend. It doesn't matter how much your mom tells you not to touch, it stares at you! So, I picked at it and three more showed up," Karlie told ELLE.com, adding that she is normally religious about removing her makeup before bed and indulges in regular facials. "I take enjoyment from having a professional pop a zit. They know what to do, especially when you've been so patient and haven't picked out a zit. I go once a month."

For Selena, the risk of acne comes with her career. "My chin gets it the worst because I hold my microphone as close to me as I possibly can, because some of my music has softer tones to it," she told Allure. "So the chin is always the first area that I treat. I usually put a mask on and a humidifier on my face after my show."

After years of struggling with breakouts, Bella Thorne turned to the powerful anti-acne drug Accutane. "The [doctors] told me, 'Nine out of 10 people never get one pimple again,'" she told Us Weekly. "So many things are bad for you, but when you have this thing on your face that feels like a monster… I was like, 'OK, I'll do it.'" But after nearly two years of treatment, she still was breaking out. She ditched it and decided to embrace her skin as it is. Bella, who's a spokesperson for Burt's Bees #LoveYourNature campaign, said, "I got this pimple the other day and I said to my sister, 'Look at this! I have a press day coming up!' And she said, 'That's a beautiful pimple, Bella. That is beautiful. Scars are beautiful.'" Now, she leans on her sister for support. "We both struggle with acne, but now, every time we get something on our face, we just say to each other, 'That's beautiful. I love my scars. I love my skin.' You have to change your mindset."

For Demi, the tough part about skincare is keeping her hands away from her face. "I get clogged pores, and my problem is I pick," she told Allure. "If I didn't pick, it would stay pretty clear." Demi — who has a skincare line, Devonne by Demi — is onto something: your fingers carry all sorts of bacteria, which can make acne and clogged pores worse.

Going on tour sounds like a dream come true, but during Fifth Harmony's Harmonize America tour, Camila had a hard time dealing with her skin. "I would wake up in the morning and be scared to look in the mirror. It was the worst thing ever," she told TWIST. To get her skin back on track, she switched to a healthier diet. "That helped me a lot," she said. "I didn't realize how much having bad skin plays into your self-confidence until I went through it. It sucked."

Skincare struggles can happen pretty much anywhere, and for Zendaya, that meant on her body. "When you have chest and back acne, it really makes you feel self-conscious and you have to be careful about what you wear so that it doesn't show," she told TWIST. (Reminder: there's no reason to hide your skin — wear whatever makes you feel good.) "My mom and I would go to the store and get a bunch of different products to try. She always told me to never pick at my zits or touch them because that would make them worse."

Laura Marano

For Laura, confidence comes from keeping perspective. "You look at it and you flip out because you're like, 'Oh my God, this is the biggest thing I've ever seen in my entire life. My face is just totally ruined like the smoothness of my face,'" she told TWIST. "And you go to school, and nobody notices it unless you point it out. No one will notice it at all unless you say, 'Look at this giant pimple I have!' And then, once you say it, then people are like, 'Oh, I wasn't noticing it before but now I see it!'" She's totally right.

Leigh-Anne Pinnock

One trick for instantly happier skin? Take off your makeup before bed. "That is so important," Little Mix's Leigh-Anne Pinnock told TWIST, noting that she used to have "really, really bad skin." She added, "And cleanse, tone and moisturize. Like, I never used to tone, but it closes your pores and since doing that my skin has gotten a lot better."

Olivia Holt

Hair, Mouth, Lip, Hairstyle, Chin, Forehead, Eyebrow, Eyelash, Facial expression, Style,

Olivia knows firsthand that a single spot can ruin your whole day — if you've ever melted down over a bad skin day, you're not alone. "I was in Tennessee with my family and we were going out to meet some friends," she told TWIST. "I got the biggest pimple… it was literally the size of the moon and it was right above my lip. I can remember throwing the biggest fit because I did not want to go out with the big pimple above my lip, and mom said that I shouldn't pop it because it might get worse. I can just remember bawling my eyes out, and at the time I didn't wear makeup, so it's not like I could cover it up easily. So, that was a very emotional day."

Miley had "really bad skin growing up," she told Byrdie, so now she makes a point of taking off her makeup and washing her face every single night, even when she's exhausted. "I will make sure I zombie walk [to the sink], no matter how late, and wash my face, because I just think it's so important," she said. Cleanliness doesn't stop there. "I never used to understand the importance of washing my brushes, but it's so important," she added. (Miley's right — every two weeks, clean your brushes to avoid conjunctivitis, infections, and more.)
