• Um, Anne Hathaway just got a short, choppy shag haircut and now looks like a ’70s kween.
  • The new haircut was the creation of hairstylist Adir Abergel, who showed off Hathaway’s short hair on Instagram last night.

If you’re still in disbelief (and possibly rage?) over last night’s Game of Thrones episode, I have good news and bad news. The good news: This story isn’t about GoT (so no spoilers or additional anxiety). The bad news: You’re still going to feel a wave of shock, because Anne Hathaway, your childhood bestie, just chopped off all her hair into a shaggy bob and looks crazy-cool.

In case you haven’t been obsessively documenting Hathaway’s hair status over the last, uh, decade, you should know that she pretty much always has longer, chest-length hair, save for the occasional lob every so often.

But over the weekend, the 36-year-old actress cut her hair into a short, shag haircut, making humans everywhere want to grab a pair of scissors and go to town on themselves (seriously, someone please restrain me).

The shag cut is the work of celeb hairstylist Adir Abergel, who first posted a photo of the new hair to Instagram, captioning it “New cut. New vibes.” Apparently, Hathaway cut her hair in promotion of her new movie, The Hustle (opening 10th May), in which she costars alongside actress Rebel Wilson. But regardless of the reason, the effect is the same: ridiculously cool, summer-ready hair.

And because Abergel is such a nice person, he posted a second photo of Hathaway’s cut yesterday, including a breakdown on exactly how to recreate the messy, piece-y texture on straight or wavy hair:

WE EARN A COMMISSION FROM PRODUCTS PURCHASED THROUGH SOME LINKS IN THIS ARTICLE.

  1. First, rough dry your damp hair with your fingers “until it’s completely dry."
  2. Then “add some random waves with a curling iron, a 1-inch iron is perfect.”
  3. Once your waves have cooled, rake a few dabs of mousse through them (Abergel used Virtue Moisture-Defining Whip), working from ends to roots
  4. Smooth a few drops of shine-enhancing serum (he used Kristin Ess Working Serum) from tips to the middle of your hair.
  5. Diffuse the product into your hair with your blow-dryer and a diffuser attachment (the heat helps set the product and create those piece-y waves).

Okay, so maybe it’s not exactly the easiest look to create if you’ve, like, never even held a blow-dryer before, but trust: There’s no way to f*ck up a shag haircut once you’ve got one. The messier it is, the better, which is why it’s honestly the best haircut to try for summer, when your hair is already a humid, swampy mess.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got an appointment with my kitchen scissors.
