It’s no secret that the world of beauty trends is circular – and there are some that we couldn't be happier to see returning. From Jerry Hall’s flowing, fluffy 70s waves to Naomi Campbell’s 90s high-gloss hair and soft smoky eyes, there’s a power in recreating a trend made famous by an icon, and getting to enjoy a little slice of their confidence (and the main character energy that comes with it).
No wonder we’re seeing countless looks from decades gone by back in the spotlight today – with a few modern updates, of course. Scroll on for some of our faves, including piecey updos, flicky layers and the thoroughly modern mullet.
The 70s disco queen
Jerry Hall’s golden curls and dancefloor-ready dresses made the late 70s disco-glam era of Studio 54 legendary. Now they’re having a resurgence, albeit with a 2024 twist, in our fave pop girlie, Sabrina Carpenter – with her big blonde blowout, curtain fringe, and bold blusher, she’s giving a truly Gen-Z take on the style.
When it comes to disco queen hair, shine and bounce are your two best friends. Ensure hair is freshly washed with TRESemmé Lamellar Shine Shampoo and Conditioner, then prep lengths with a pump of the TRESemmé Lamellar Shine Leave-In Cream Serum, to ensure locks are glossy, smooth and oh-so shiny. Finally, grab a blowdry brush and get to work, to add some serious movement and bounce.
The 80s rock icon
From smudgy, kohl-lined eyes and biker jackets to messy mullets, the rock-and-roll style took hold of the 80s with artists like Joan Jett, Tina Turner and Stevie Nicks leading the charge. These women broke boundaries across the music industry, amassing millions of fans and countless awards – so it’s hardly surprising that in 2024, we’re still inspired by their spirit, not to mention their aesthetic.
The modern mullet has been spotted on everyone from Rihanna to Greta Lee. The top layers have been softened to give a subtleness to the classic 80s style, but there’s no denying the trend still has an edge – paired with a leather jacket and slick of eyeliner, it oozes power and confidence. A trick to enhance your modern mullet? Mist a texturising hair spray through the lengths and ends for a soft-yet-defined finish.
The 90s supermodel
Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, we could go on…the 90s gave us the stratospheric rise of the supermodel, and we’re still looking to them today for style cues. Frosted eyeshadow, skinny brows, grungy brown lipstick and claw clips were all elements that shaped the 90s.
Nowadays, the piecey updo is just as popular as ever, with the likes of Dua Lipa, Zendaya, Millie Bobby Brown and Bella Hadid championing the look. Team yours with just a touch of lip liner shading and a dab of gloss (we like Glossier’s Lip Line in Nip and Gisou’s Honey Infused Lip Oil in Coconut Frost) for the ultimate 90s-inspired look.
The 00s ‘It’ girl
A sweeping side fringe, cami tops, ballet flats…tell me you grew up in the 00s without telling me you grew up in the 00s. From Paris Hilton to Beyonce and JLo to Avril Lavigne, the 00s gave us so many ‘It’ girls, and even nowadays, it’s impossible to think of chunky highlights, lip gloss and bandeau tops without the theme tune to Paris and Nicole’s The Simple Life playing in your brain. No wonder Gen-Z are obsessed with the Y2K aesthetic – it’s as cute as it is empowering.
Whilst pin-straight hair with feathered, flicky layers was the 00s look du jour, nowadays, it’s all about glass hair. Shine reigns supreme, but of course, we still love to rock flicked out ends and a sweeping side fringe à la Ariana Grande from time-to-time. Glass hair demands an ultra-smooth finish, so we suggest having a lightweight but nourishing hair oil, such as TRESemmé’s Lamellar Shine Finishing Oil, on hand to keep flyaways under control. Now all you need is a cami top, shrug cardigan and a Jane Norman bag.
The TRESemmé Lamellar Shine edit is a four-part collection including shampoo, conditioner, a versatile leave-in cream serum, and a finishing oil. Using patented lamellar technology, it aligns hair fibres for maximum smoothness and a hyper glossy, salon-worthy finish. Discover the TRESemmé Lamellar Shine range now at boots.com
