It’s easy to assume that simply cleansing your skin for make-up-removal purposes with whatever is available is enough. But trust us, it’s not.
An efficient cleanser is the unsung hero of your skincare regime, crucial for removing leftovers from the day (or night), such as makeup, sunscreen, pollution and sweat. Pick the right one and it’ll also preserve your skin’s natural pH and prepare it to absorb other products.
But how do you know which one is right for you?
We’ve teamed up with skincare gurus Simple, who are on a mission to make skincare easy to understand, to show you how to recognise if you’re using the wrong cleanser for your skin type, and which products will help you get it right.
1. If your skin feels greasy
If your skin feels oily or greasy after your morning splash, it’s time to switch to a foam or gel-based formula. These cleanser types are best suited to those with oily, combination or particularly acne-prone skin – or a combination of all three – as foams and gels are able to deeply cleanse your pores while leaving your natural facial oils to do their thing. Using a heavier, cream-based cleanser has the potential to leave you with greasier skin than necessary.
Simple’s Smoothing Gel Cleanser contains 5% AHA for efficient exfoliation while you cleanse, plus a dose of hydrating hyaluronic acid for balance, removing dirt, oil and makeup while still being super gentle on skin. It also works with your skin’s natural pH balance while blitzing impurities.
2. If your skin looks dull
If your current cleanser is causing your skin to look a little grey and dull or showing any other signs of being a bit lacklustre, you might be reacting to an overload of ingredients in the product. Those with flat-looking skin should be super-vigilant when picking a cleanser, so look for products that contain clay to draw out impurities and natural exfoliators such as bamboo, like the Simple Glow Facial Wash.
Naturally derived exfoliators and natural ingredients (think anti-oxidant vitamins c and e) will do wonders for gently removing dead skin cells, you will need to regularly get rid of the build up to ensure your skin can reflect natural light. Using a cleanser that encourages brightness will see you become the radiant queen you deserve to be in no time.
3. If your skin feels dry and tight
After cleansing, your skin shouldn’t feel dry, taut or rough. If you’re experiencing any of these, it’s likely that your cleanser has stripped your skin of its natural oils, as well as potentially compromising its pH level.
If you’re a dry-skin sufferer, a cream cleanser will help ensure precious moisture remains locked in while swerving dry patches, so keep your eyes peeled for formulas containing super-hydrating hyaluronic acid, like Simple’s Replenishing Cream Cleanser. This clever cleanser is also packed with ceramide boosters to support the skin’s natural ceramide production (fatty acids that keep the skin strong and supple). If you spot glycerin on your cleanser’s ingredient list, that’s another green flag – it’s a top-level hydrator for dry skin. Just because cleansers remove impurities, doesn’t mean they should steal your glow, too.
Once you’ve found your perfect product, keep it consistent. Cleanse your face twice a day and stick with your product for at least three months to really see it working its magic. You’ll be in fresh-skin nirvana in no time.
