If Travis Kelce wants to retire from the Kansas City Chiefs he better act fast, because apparently he's been giving a hard deadline by the team.
According to a report from The Athletic (via People) the Chiefs have given Travis a deadline of March 14 to decide if he wants to keep playing, which is pretty much exactly a month away. The outlet also notes that Travis' contract (which goes through 2025) includes a $11.5 million "roster bonus" due to be paid out on March 15.
Speculation about Travis' potential retirement has been growing since the Chiefs lost the Super Bowl to the Eagles on February 9. He addressed rumors during a recent conversation with Jason Kelce on their podcast New Heights, saying “I know everybody wants to know whether or not I'm playing next year, and right now, I'm just kicking everything down the road. I'm not making any crazy decisions.”
Trav added, “I'm gonna take some time to figure it out. And, I think I owe it to my teammates that if I do come back, it's a wholehearted decision. I'm not half-assing it, and I'm fully here for them.”
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was also asked about Travis retiring, and said the decision is ultimately his.
“I’ll let Travis make that decision on his own, man,” he explained during a post-Super Bowl press conference. “He’s given so much to this team and to the NFL, and been such a joy not only for me to work with, but for people to watch. And so, he knows he still has a lot of football left in him. You can see it, he always makes plays in the biggest moments. But it's if he wants to put in that grind. It’s a grind to go out there and play 20 games, whatever it is, and get to the Super Bowl.”
