Almost 20 (!!!!) years after The Devil Wears Prada strutted into our lives in 2006, it's finally happening: The Devil Wears Prada sequel is officially in production! And while the sequel at first seemed to be moving at a glacial pace (You know how that thrills me), things are now moving at warp speed!
When was The Devil Wears Prada sequel announced?
Reports originally circulated in July of 2024 that Disney was developing a sequel and had tapped Aline Brosh McKenna to return as screenwriter.
Speaking at an event at the Red Sea Film Festival in December 2024, Emily Blunt confirmed the reports that there had been talks about a possible Devil Wears Prada 2. (Or, as I'd like it to be called, The Devil Wears Prada: That's All.) But she couldn't reveal whether or not she had actually signed on.
It wasn't until June of 2025 that an official announcement was made via 20th Century Studio's official Instagram. Not only is The Devil Wears Prada sequel happening, it's already in production.
Is there a trailer?
While not a full trailer, the studio did release a teaser trailer today, and I'm not kidding when I say I got chills watching this. It shows Miranda walk into an elevator, only to be joined by Andy. They are both, notably, wearing sunglasses indoors and looking chic as hell while doing it.
What will The Devil Wears Prada sequel be about?
Per Variety, the project's storyline would focus on Miranda Priestly, played by Meryl Streep, "as she navigates her career amid the decline of traditional magazine publishing and faces off against [Emily] Blunt’s character, now a high-powered executive for a luxury group with advertising dollars that Priestly desperately needs.” TL;DR: Emily, Miranda's neurotic, aggressive assistant in the original film, is going to go head-to-head with her old boss in what I can only assume will be a very fashionable war of the wills.
Anne Hathaway had said at one point in V Magazine that the current state of the media industry would make a sequel hard to navigate. "There’s a huge difference in the world now with technology, and one of the things about that particular story is it was about producing a physical object," she said. "Now with so much being digital, it would just be very different." With the sequel now officially happening, this will probably factor heavily into the plot.
Who will be in it?
Following the official announcement, The Hollywood Reporter broke down an early rundown of the cast, which you can see in full below.
Returning cast:
- Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly, Editor in Chief of Runway
- Anne Hathaway as Andy Sachs, aka the girl that did go to Paris
- Emily Blunt as Emily, Miranda's ambitious assistant
- Stanley Tucci as Nigel, Miranda's long-suffering creative director
As for those joining the cast, Keneth Branagh has reportedly been cast to play Miranda's husband, who never appeared on screen in the original film.
Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on who you ask), Adrian Grenier will not be coming back as Andy's chef boyfriend, Nate.
When will The Devil Wears Prada sequel come out?
As much as I want it RTFN, there's still a bit of time left before this hits our theaters. The confirmed release day is May 1, 2026.
Anything else?
In the years since the original The Devil Wears Prada film came out, the cast has continued to talk about their love for the 2006 classic.
Anne and Emily sat down late last year and reminisced about making the movie for Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series. "We just had a joy bomb of a time on that movie. I don’t know if any of us knew it was going to become what it did. It’s quoted to me every week. It will be the movie that changed my life,” Emily said during the convo. “So we’re in the The Devil Wears Prada club together," Anne added.
