Self-tanning is one of two things: Absolutely amazing or next-level terrible. Nope, there's no in-between, because as anyone who regularly uses self-tanner knows, the wrong formula and technique can lead to a streaky mess real quick. That's why it's so important to go into the process with (1) lots of patience and (2) the top self-tanners. While I can't help you with the former (...might I suggest a little pre-tanning ritual complete with a nice candle, calming music, and a body scrub?), I've definitely got you on the latter.

After tapping the incredible team at Cosmopolitan, I was able to put together a definitive list of the best self-tanners ~ever~. We've got options for your body and face, as well as every formulation you could ever imagine—from mousses and lotions, to express drops and mists. Every single pick on this list is Cosmo-approved and will leave you looking like you just stepped off the plane from Mexico...even if you've been holed up in your tiny apartment all weekend. A sneak peek:

Our top picks for the best self-tanners of 2025:

Keep reading for all of our favorites, including reviews from Cosmo editors and readers on why they're so damn good.

  • Lightweight and enjoyable to use

Cons

  • The nozzle can be a bit messy

Let's be real, self-tanning isn't always the most enjoyable experience. But I'm convinced you'll actually look forward to your tanning ritual with this mousse. The lightweight foam beautifully melts into skin, leaving no unevenness or streaks. Plus, it deeply nourishes skin, acting similarly to a moisturizer, thanks to coconut oil, cucumber, mango, and apricot in the formula. Cosmo editorslove it so much, it earned the title of Best Self-Tanner in our 2024 Holy Grail Beauty Awards.

  • Type: Mousse
  • Shades: 3
  • Size: 6.4 oz

One Cosmo editor says: “I put it on my entire body before bed, then rinse off in the morning to reveal a bronzy glow that looks like I just hopped off the plane from Tulum.”—Beth Gillette, beauty editor

Self-Tanning Natural Glow Face Drops

  • The easiest tanner ever (just mix into moisturizer)

Cons

  • The bottle can leak, so make sure it's securely closed

Literally every single person in my circle swears by these little tanning drops. They quickly went viral when they launched in 2018, and they've remained uber popular every year since. Simply mix a few drops into you facial or body moisturizer (they can be used anywhere) and watch as your skin gradually becomes bronzed. They're so simple, so effective, and come in three shades. TBH, it's no surprise these won a Reader's Choice Award last year.

  • Type: Drops
  • Shades: 3
  • Size: 1 oz

One Cosmo reader says: “It is like taking a one-week vacation overnight. I use it on my face and body because of how natural it looks."

Not only does the lightweight formula dry in 60 seconds, it's meant to be washed off in just two hours—no overnight waiting or staining your sheets in the process. Contour Self-Tanning Sculpt + Glow

Pros

  • Allows you to self-tan the most precise places

  • Shimmery formula, which some people might not like

If you've been scrolling through TikTok lately, you know that people have been strategically placing their self-tanner where they'd put contour to simplify their makeup routines. It's filled with self-tanning formula that develops in a few hours, and the applicator allows for optimal placement.

Best Self-Tanner for Sensitive Noses

The Express Hydrating Self-Tan Water

The Express Hydrating Self-Tan Water
Now 20% Off

Pros

  • This spray is super speedy—it starts working in 30 minutes
  • Doesn't smell bad at all

Cons

  • You have to spritz a lot to get the results you want

Why do so many self-tanners smell chemical-y and gross? (FWIW, it's the DHA in the formula, which is what gives you the tan in the first place.) Even the ones with a tropical scent can be a bit much. If you want one that won't trigger your nose—and still give you an even tan—opt for this water. Liberally spritz it where you want to glow and within 30 minutes you'll begin looking radiant, without such an awful smell.

  • Type: Water

  • One of the most hydrating self-tanners we've tested

Cons

  • Leaves a pretty strong self-tanner-esque scent on my sheets

If you've tried Jergen's iconic gradual tanning lotion, you'll love the mousse version. It's actually highly beloved on TikTok to even out deep skin tones and add a bronzey glow. True to their brand, it's also acts great moisturizer so your skin feels softer and more comfortable.

  • Type: Mousse

  • Size: 6 oz

One Cosmo reader says: "I don’t often leave reviews unless a product or service is great or horrible, but this product is phenomenal! This was my first time using sunless tanner and I was so blown away at how beautiful this looked on my skin and how easy it was to apply. I’m very pasty in the winter so the Light Bronze color was perfect for me. It gave me some color without me looking orange or like an Oompa Loompa."

Best Self-Tanner Face Mist

Self-Tan Purity Bronzing Water Face Mist

Credit: St. Tropez

Pros

  • Just mist on my face in the morning, and it develops during the day
  • Makes skin look glowy and naturally bronzed
  • Travel friendly

Cons

  • Don't over spray—start with two to three mists and work your way up

Even though the majority of self-tanners can be applied on your body and face, I've never had success (I usually end up looking muddy). That's why I love this bronzing face mist so g'damn much. I mist a thin layer underneath my makeup, and it develops into a golden, glowy tan in four to eight hours. The best part? It lasts up to three days, so I don't have to worry about daily touchups.

  • Type: Water
  • Shades: 1

This easy-to-apply formula is a light mousse that's practically foolproof. (Yep, even if you've never self-tanned before, you'll be obsessed from the first use.) My friends swear by this and always bring it on vacation to achieve a picture-perfect glow.

What's the best way to apply self-tanner?

horizontal line

It all depends on the formula you choose, because there are mousses, sprays, drops, and lotions to choose from. It's best to read the instructions on whatever tanner you use. However, regardless of the formula, you'll want to thoroughly exfoliate your skin before application to slough away dead skin to prevent streaks and splotchiness.

If you're using a mousse, spray, or lotion, work from bottom to top, buffing the tanner over your legs then torso and arms in circular motions using a tanning mitt. If you prefer drops, you'll want to mix a few drops into your moisturizer, then smooth it over your body.

How long does self-tanner last?

horizontal line separator

While it depends on the formula, mosts self-tanners will leave you glowy for five to seven days. If you moisturize often, you'll be able to increase the longevity of your bronze too.

Can I use self-tanner on my face?

horizontal line used for separation or emphasis

Yes, but not all formulas are recommended for use on your face. It's best to avoid using a mousse or lotion on your face (this can be a bit streaky and/or cause breakouts if you're acne-prone). Instead, stick with a mist or drops. So many people swear by the Isle of Paradise Self-Tanning Drops for the face because it's gentle and includes other skincare ingredients like vitamin C and avocado oil.

How to choose the best self-tanner for you:

horizontal line

Choose your formula.

There are so many different formulations of self-tanner, ranging from mousses and waters, to sprays, drops, and lotions. Some formulas are better for your body rather than face, so think about where you're trying to enhance your glow. If you want to look bronzed all over, try a lotion or mousse. If your face could use a little color, opt for a spray or drops. Or! Opt for a formula that you can use on your face and body to maximize.

Consider the development time.

The development time is how long it takes for the tan to ~magically appear~ on your skin. This all depends on the formula. Many will take six to eight hours, while others are express and can give you a bronzed appearance in an hour or two. If you need to be tan ASAP, definitely choose an express formulation. These are also great if you don't like sleeping in your tan, or like to tan while traveling.

Assess your skin type.

Self-tanners are inherently drying because of the active ingredient DHA, but there are some formulas that offer extra hydrating ingredients to keep you skin smooth, soft, and comfortable. When your skin is hydrated your tan lasts longer, so scan the ingredients label for things like hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, and coconut oil.
