When it comes to versatility, the Chelsea boot reigns supreme, as it can be worn with just about a-n-y-t-h-i-n-g, from jeans to dresses to faux-leather leggings. And while the classic Chelsea boot is close-fitting with an ankle shaft height and leather upper, you'll find tons of variations for every style preference (we're talking heeled options, platform styles, and super-chunky lug-soled varieties). Ofc, the best Chelsea boots have a few things in common: They're comfy, they're versatile, and they're made to last. Feeling overwhelmed by the options? Not to worry, 'cause I've rounded up my faves, including picks for every style and budget.

So...what is a Chelsea boot exactly? You'll recognize a Chelsea boot by the elastic panel on either side of the shoe (also known as the gore or gusset), which allows you to slip them on and off without any zippers or laces. Lazy folks, rejoice! Whether you're looking for a pair of trendy lug-sole boots that'll give ya a lil height boost or durable snow boots to get you through the winter in style, I've got all the cutest, comfiest Chelsea boots you can buy this season (and you can take a sneak peek below!).

Duchess Chelsea Boots

Pros

  • Available in 10 neutral colorways
  • Don't require a long break-in period, per testers

Cons

  • Run a bit small, so may need to go up half a size
  • Some reviewers wish they offered more cushion

In the world of Chelsea boots, Thursday is royalty, and for good reason: The company makes truly top-notch shoes. You'll find Chelsea boots in all styles at Thursday, but my faves have got to be the classic Duchess boots, which are made with either full-grain leather or suede and feature shock-absorbing insoles, super-durable studded outsoles, and a modest lil stacked heel.

  • Size range: 5-11 with half sizes
  • Material: Leather or suede
  • Heel height: 1.25"
  • Color options: Black, black coffee, brown, walnut, dark olive, dark brown, shadow grey, glazed ginger, cognac, or honey peach
  • Waterproof? No

THE REVIEW: As one tester writes, "I don't love a very wide ankle shaft, but I also don't want a boot that is impossible to put on and remove. These boots fit the bill perfectly! I love that the shaft is about an inch higher than any of my other boots, so they are perfect for wearing socks with skinny jeans without looking ridiculous. These were comfortable right from the start without an official break-in period."

If you're looking for something with a short shaft, these booties from Nisolo are *it.* I'm so in love with the incredibly cushy five-layer memory foam insoles, the modest stacked-style wrapped heels, and the casual yet elevated design (especially since these bbs are Leather Working Group-certified, which means they're made with responsible leather).

  • Offer a softer, more flexible feel than traditional Chelsea boots

Cons

  • Run large, so you'll probably need to size down
  • Def a magnet for lint and pet hair

If you're not into the stiff feel of traditional Chelsea boots, these cuties will change your mind. Rather than leather, these water-resistant boots are made with a blend of merino wool and Rothy's signature thread (aka plastic bottles), so they're both sustainable and durable. Reviewers also <3 the flexible knit uppers, the sturdy lug outsoles, and the cloud-like insoles.

Cons

  • A bit tricky to put on and take off initially
  • May have to join a waitlist for certain sizes/colors

With its tall shaft, contrasting gullets, and heavily lugged sole, the All Rounder looks so badass—but luckily, they don't feel (or sound!) nearly as clunky as they look. • Look way more stylish than traditional rain or snow boots

Cons

  • Run narrow, but reviewers say they stretch over time
  • Footbed cushioning could be improved

Found: rain boots that don't actually *look* like rain boots. Rather than just water-resistant, Blondo's Chelsea boots are actually waterproof, since they're protected with an AquaProtect seal, meaning water droplets just roll right off 'em. They'll stand up to stormy weather and look good while doing it, thanks to the thick rubber lug sole and contrast welt.

  • Size range: 5-11 with half sizes
  • Material: Leather or suede
  • Heel height: 2.25"
  • Color options: Black, java, sand, olive, navy, or cognac

  • So comfy, thanks to roomy toe box and tons of cushioning

Cons

  • Can be tricky to get on and off
  • May not keep your feet warm enough in colder weather

With its square toe and ankle shaft height, the Ryan Pro def doesn't look like your typical Chelsea boot...especially since it features a knit upper made from recycled plastic bottles rather than leather. Reviewers are in love with the roomy toe box, cushy microfiber insoles, and anti-slip rubber outsoles—and here's the cherry on top: These shoes are totally water-repellent.

  • Size range: 5-11 with half sizes

How to choose the best Chelsea boots

linebreak

Stick with breathable materials

High-quality vegan leather exists, ofc, but faux-leather shoes are generally less breathable than those made with real leather...and since Chelsea boots have a snug fit, you def don't want your feet sweating up a storm. "Wearing shoes with breathable material is better than wearing synthetic material," says celebrity podiatrist Marion Yau (aka Miss Foot Fixer). "I recommend leather and suede."

In addition to being breathable, leather also has lots of stretch. As celebrity stylist Cindy Conroy explains, natural fibers can "stretch and conform to the mold of your feet" and "adjust throughout the day as your feet swell," while synthetic shoes will not. And for something a lil different, you can always opt for Chelsea boots made with knit uppers (like Rothy's Lug Boot or Vivaia's Ryan Pro), which will allow for tons of breathability and stretch.

Find the right height

Over the years, the Chelsea silhouette has evolved to include all sorts of shapes and styles, from casual and chunky to sleek and elevated. But before you reach for those gigantic platforms, think about how and when you plan on wearing your boots. If comfort is your priority, then Conroy suggests sticking with a heel that's two inches or less (like the Inez Caro), or a boot with a wedge or platform heel.

And if you do choose a Chelsea boot with a lil height, then make sure your foot has ample support. Yau recommends looking for boots that have a "little bit of arch support and cushion inside," such as the Frankie4 Liberty, which includes inserts that allow you to customize your fit.

Decide when you'll be wearing

Again, the best Chelsea boots tend to be made with leather or suede, and while natural leather does have some degree of water resistance, it's not made to endure tons of rain and snow. However! That doesn't mean you have to wear a pair of stuffy rubber boots all winter long. If traditional rain boots aren't your jam, then shop for waterproof Chelsea boots that have been treated with a protector or sealant, like Blondo's Dyme Ankle Boot.
