Never in my life have I been this emotionally attached to a bag—but alas, the time has come. After 29 years! As a style shopping editor who’s been in the biz for nearly a decade, I’ve had tons of purses pass through my life, designer and affordable, and I definitely wouldn’t have guessed that this $60 camo bag from Urban Outfitters would be the one that I reach for most. And honestly, bless the heavens that it is, because in this economy, I don’t have a Rob Rausch in my life ready to buy me a Birkin.
The BDG Y2K Denim Tote Shoulder Bag is for the girls who somehow end up carrying everything they own every time they leave the house, but absolutely hate lugging around a giant tote. (And call me crazy, but that's most of us, right?) I never expected it to hold as much as it does. In fact, I didn’t even wear it for the first three months I had it because I assumed it would be one of those super chic bags that we'ren't actually practical and would end up being flimsy and tiny. Turns out… I was very wrong.
It’s now legit my work bag—ahem, my life bag. The camo shockingly goes with so many of my outfits, even my more business-leaning office looks. It adds a fun pop of pattern and just makes the whole look feel cooler. And somehow it fits my laptop, a makeup pouch, a full workout set, a handful of miscellaneous lip glosses, my AirPods, my wallet, a bottle of probiotics, and a brand-new electric toothbrush still in its box? FYI: That’s just the main pocket, which zips, might I add—an extremely underrated win. (Also, one more time for the people in the back: IT FITS MY 13-INCH LAPTOP.)
Oh, and I'm not done because there are five exterior pockets. One is a long horizontal one that’s roomier than it looks, and the other four are those deceptively spacious pockets that somehow hold way more than you expect. They won’t fit a laptop, unfortunately, but I use them for things like pens, 10 emergency lip glosses, a pair of spare underwear (you never know), and the random little items that would otherwise disappear at the bottom of my bag.
And I have to give some love to the long shoulder straps (which, as a 4'11" gal, surprisingly fall perfectly at my hips). They seriously worked overtime this winter since my daily wardrobe always involved a puffer jacket. No matter how thick my coat was, the bag still sat comfortably on my shoulder without me worrying about it slipping off every five seconds.
In a world where finding a bag that’s both stylish and functional feels about as difficult as finding photos of Frank Ocean on the internet (level: hard), I’m genuinely grateful this one found its way to me. The quality is incredible, and the amount of space it has is honestly shocking for how modestly not huge it looks. I’ve lost count of the compliments and the surprised reactions when people realize just how much it holds. It’s basically a Mary Poppins bag, minus the bulk. Looking back, I’m not entirely sure how I lived without it. Honestly, I probably wasn’t doing too great. Do yourself a favor and just get one.
