Fall and winters new neutral is burgundy, a fashion trend I wholeheartedly embrace (ask me about my 30th birthday look). The deep reddish hue is also sometimes called bordeaux, maroon, oxblood, port, merlot, pinot, and wine—and it seems like the urge to wear it comes about pretty much as soon as the leaves start to change. But this year, the color is pretty much taking over everything, one Instagram feed at a time, and I can’t lie—I love it. Maybe it’s how the romantic and moody tone gives off a luxury feel or maybe it’s the fact that it really is pretty much a neutral that goes with anything. (You couldn’t miss Pantone’s “Windsor Wine” at the spring and summer runways shows at London Fashion Week).

Like I said, the color tends to have a little home in the spotlight every fall and winter, but we’ve never been head over heels in love with the hue like we are now, collectively. When it’s not staring at us in the form of videos on the For You Page, it’s on celebrities like Olivia Rodrigo.

Designer brands like Gucci, Miu Miu, and Hermès are setting the tone (get it?) with every chic piece imaginable (ahem, tailored suiting), and it’s trickling down into retail stores everywhere. Which means it is pretty easy to get into it yourself. And I have to say doing so will probably elevate your wardrobe because the choices have an unavoidable luxe and polished finish.

And as we inch closer to the holiday season this winter, this burgundy phenomenon will become completely inescapable—just watch. It looks so good in velvet and sequin versions, which are bound to show up at office parties and friend gatherings all December and January long.

The best part about burgundy being absolutely everywhere? The fact that you can choose from so many different styles. Wear a pop of it in your tights or accessories, or go head-to-toe in a very sumptuous monochrome look.
