I sniffed everything from the timeless Miss Dior to the somewhat controversial Sauvage.

One of the first perfumes on my wishlist as a tween was Miss Dior. Seeing Natalie Portman in all the campaign imagery fully convinced me it was what I needed. I'd be refined, desired, chic—some might even say ~cosmopolitan~. Certainly, my eighth-grade crush would be writing me love letters in study hall, right?

Fast-forward more than a decade later, and I still associate every Dior perfume with that same level of sophistication and class. But how do they all fare when compared next to each other? Which are the sexiest perfumes? Are there any from Dior that are soft and delicate for daytime? What Dior perfume should you try if you like vanilla or woodsy notes? I put my nose to work and sniffed every single perfume the brand offers, from Miss Dior to the controversial Sauvage—and I ranked my top seven picks.

J'adore L'or

Pros

  • Yummy white floral that smells a little bit sweet, not too green or botanical
  • Very solar and beachy (but not in a typical way)

Cons

  • A rich scent that those who like something light and airy might not enjoy

The first Dior fragrance made by famed perfumer Francis Kurkdjian (he is the brains behind Baccarat Rouge 540, btw). He wanted to reimagine and intensity the original J'Adore perfume that's loved so much. And upon first sniff, it became my favorite Dior perfume ever. The bottle is dripped in gold, and that's exactly how I smell whenever I wear it. The notes—jasmine, violet, orange blossom, lily of the valley, and rose—all seem so simple, but together, it makes a really decadent, juicy floral perfume. It's saccharine and thick, giving it extra longevity and projection.

Miss Dior Parfum Eau de Parfum

Pros

  • Lasts on my skin for 8 to 12 hours
  • Spices and juicy fruit notes balance out the florals

Cons

  • I wish the cap wasn't plastic (but this is across the board for all Miss Dior scents)

This intensified version of the O.G. Miss Dior perfume is basically that scent, but sexier. Strawberry, patchouli, and amber give this fruity floral scent a total run for its money. It's more mature, but in the NSFW way, not the grandma-smelling way. I love spritzing this on during the day when I want to feel powerful, but it's a fantastic date-night perfume because it's loud without overpowering your nose.

Miss Dior Essence Parfum

Pros

  • Ripe blackberry note feels so unique and fresh
  • One of my favorite Dior bottles

Cons

  • Not the same floral as you might expect from Miss Dior

Kurkdjian wanted the newest iteration of Miss Dior, Essence, to evoke confidence, hoping the scent would just melt into skin and smell youthful. While every other Miss Dior scent has a strong floral DNA, this is different. It's fruitier and brighter. The jasmine note is sparkly and fresh, not powdery. It feels timeless but also modern and exciting. I've been spritzing this one at my desk nonstop since it launched.

Hypnotic Poison

Pros

  • Juicy fruit opening helps balance out the musky and powdery notes
  • Smells nostalgic and like the '90s to me (it's something my mom probably would have worn)

Cons

  • The powdery notes can smell like Play-Doh to some

I have to fight myself to not make the Twilight book cover pose with this every time I pick it up. But even that couldn't force me away from using it. Released in the late 1990s, Hypnotic Poison has that "office siren" vibe to it. Ripened apricot and plum smell like they've been squeezed directly into the bottle, but as it dries, florals like jasmine and lily of the valley start to bloom. It settles into vanilla, musk, almond, and sandalwood—a warm, sexy combo that lasts for six to eight hours on my skin.

Miss Dior Eau de Parfum

Pros

  • Soft, traditionally "feminine" scent that's super well-loved
  • Has really great longevity

Cons

  • A bit powdery for my usual tastes

A fresh, honeyed floral is exactly what I come to think of as a "Dior" scent. Miss Dior has been around for ages now, but this version feels so true to the house. It's soft, green, and fresh—there's peony, iris, lily of the valley, and rose that make up the floral profile. I'm not usually obsessed with floral perfumes, but I love how this one makes me feel put-together and chic. Like I'm wearing a blazer and going to a business luncheon. I think it works for me, though, because there's vanilla, musk, benzoin, and sandalwood in the dry down that completes the scent. There's more depth than meets the eye, which feels like a really beautiful nod to the Miss Dior person themself, you know?

Eden-Roc

Pros

  • I love the light, beachy scent
  • Not too heavy or cloying

Cons

  • If you like a strong perfume, you will likely be underwhelmed

When I first started at Cosmo, both of my editors practically hated every single fragrance I put in front of their faces. But the only scent they both told me they loved was Eden-Roc. And I get it: It's one of the lightest, most gentle-on-the-nose perfumes I've ever smelled. IMO, it smells like clean laundry. But not in a cotton or linen-y, synthetic way. Instead, it's a little salty and mineral-y, reminding me of a breezy beach shirt that just hangs over your bikini.

Fahrenheit By Christian Eau De Toilette

Pros

  • Perfect mix of sexy leather and warm notes
  • Would make a fantastic holiday gift

Cons

  • Some people think the sandalwood note smells like pencil shavings (I, however, love that smell)

Amongst the Dior fragranced geared toward men (obviously, we know that fragrances don't have gender; wear whatever the heck you want), everyone seems to go buckwild for Sauvage and leave out Fahrenheit. And I simply won't stand for it anymore, dammit. Fahrenheit is its chicer, deeper, older sibling. It was originally released in the '80s, and it smells like it (complimentary!!). It's an old leather jacket hanging up in the back of your closet that you pull out every fall—there's musk and soft lavender, but also warm amber and sandalwood, and smokey cedar and patchouli. This has been my dad's signature scent since I was born, and now I wear it too!
