While my days of aggressively trying to clear my teenage acne with Stridex pads and alcoholic toners are long gone, my skepticism towards mediocre skincare still remains (one might call it an internal scar… most of my many external scars have since been erased by retinol, thank you very much). But I do have a handful of faithful, ride-or-die faves that I've repurchased multiple times over the years and coincidentally, most of them are La Roche-Posay products.

Not acquainted yet? No prob! La Roche-Posay is a French brand (bc of course it is—French skincare is the best!) that you’ll find on most Parisian pharmacy shelves. They boast tons of soothing, simple-yet-effective skincare products that feel incredibly sophisticated but won’t run you more than $50 (you're welcome, wallet). Their Toleriane line is my personal fave—it’s been my hydrating, calming go-to for the past five years of my Accutane/retinol/tretinoin journey. They also have product lines specifically for oily skin, acne-prone skin, mature skin, etc. Here's a preview of some of my favorites…

Our top picks for the best La Roche-Posay products in 2024

La Roche-Posay caters to every skin type and texture, plus it's decently affordable—some would even consider it a drugstore brand! What's not to love?!

But I'll admit that their selection can get overwhelming (especially if you’re unfamiliar with their various lines and/or aren’t a native French speaker, lol). So to help you narrow things down, I asked around the Cosmo offices for recommendations, tested a ton of their top-selling products that I hadn't already tried, and put together this list of the absolute best La Roche-Posay products that money can buy. Happy shopping!

La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Balm B5

Cicaplast Balm B5

Pros

  • Incredibly soothing, great for protecting your skin barrier
  • Can be used on your hands, feet, and body
  • Safe for baby use

Cons

  • May leave a white cast on darker skin tones

If I could only use one moisturizer for the rest of my life, it would be this one. TikTok may have discovered the magic of Cicaplast Balm just last year, but I've been using it ever since I discovered in college that my sensitive skin absolutely drinks up this calming, thick cream. It's my holy grail for calming redness, reducing the appearance of acne marks, and treating flaky, dry skin. You can even use it for slugging if the thought of smearing Vaseline on your face scares you!

If for whatever reason your skin doesn't respond well to the thicker texture, take a page out of Cosmo Beauty Editor Beth Gilette's book and try the gel version of LRP's Cicaplast Balm. "All of a sudden a year ago, the O.G. Cicaplast started breaking out my skin," she explained. "Luckily, LRP launched a lighter, gel version that does nothing of the sort while still treating cracked, irritated skin. The formula's glycerin hydrates the hell outta my face and even soothes my inflamed acne with centella asiatica."

  • Key ingredients: Vitamin B5 (panthenol), shea butter, madecassoside
  • Size: 1.35 fl. oz.

Glowing customer review: "A miracle for cracked and dry skin! La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Balm B5 has been a lifesaver for my severely cracked face with red blotches. This restorative balm has proven to be a game-changer in alleviating discomfort and promoting healing. I appreciate the non-greasy texture, allowing me to apply it throughout the day without feeling heavy or sticky. The balm absorbs well, and I've seen significant improvement in the overall condition of my skin since incorporating it into my skincare routine."

Toleriane Double Repair UV SPF Moisturizer

Pros

  • Contains SPF 30
  • Leaves the skin feeling plump and glowing but not greasy or oily
  • Lightweight formula

Cons

  • Some people might want a higher SPF

If you hate that sticky, sunscreen-y feeling (urghhh), this is the SPF for you. It applies more like a regular lotion than a thick sunscreen, doesn't clog my pores, and doesn't leave my skin super shiny under makeup. Oh, and it doesn't have that ~sunscreen smell~, either. Basically, if you're a plain lotion person but you're trying to get in the SPF habit, this is the product for ya!

  • Key ingredients: Niacinamide, glycerin, ceramide-3
  • Size: 2.5 fl. oz.

Glowing customer review: "I love this face moisturizer and it’s a bonus that it has sunscreen in it. It might seem a little pricey, but you don’t need a lot of the product for good coverage. I can definitely see that my face is more moisturized and I haven’t had any sunburn on my cheeks like I normally do. Definitely keeping this one in my makeup bag."

Anthelios Mineral Tinted Sunscreen Fluid SPF 50

Pros

  • Contains SPF 50
  • Light, liquid-like texture that absorbs quickly
  • Fresh, skinlike finish

Cons

  • Only comes in one tint—may be too dark if you have very fair skin

Yes, La Roche-Posay has a mineral sunscreen option! Their sunscreen fluid is aptly-named—the light, thin consistency is a dream to apply. This is what I reach for on summer days when I'm a little more sunkissed and don't want to wear heavy concealer or foundation.

Deanna Pai, Deputy Beauty Director, loves this tinted version for her skin. "I'm not usually a mineral-sunscreen girlie, but I love everything about this SPF," she explains. "It doesn't leave a white cast, it sinks in within a matter of seconds, and it actually leaves my naturally oily skin looking matte and fresh—the opposite of pretty much every other sunscreen out there."

  • Key ingredients: Titanium dioxide, iron oxides
  • Size: 1.7 fl. oz.

Glowing customer review: "My dermatologist always has a little bucket of samples that you can pick from at checkout & one day I grabbed this after my skin check. I felt like such a winner at grabbing the right sample the very first time I tried this. I LOVE this product & have turned all my friends onto it too. It's silky smooth, gives the right amount of moisture & doesn't affect your makeup application but gives you the SPF 50 you need while feeling weightless. I've never used another facial sunscreen that looked so good & also made my skin still feel clean & bare."

Lipikar AP+ Triple Repair Moisturizing Cream

Pros

  • Can be used on both body and face
  • Rebalances the skin microbiome
  • 48 hour hydration
  • Ideal for dry skin, a little goes a long way!

Cons

  • Doesn't have a scent, less ideal for those who prefer a scented lotion

I will admit that I'm a former body lotion hater (like, would run away from my mom when she tried to apply lotion on me when I was a small child) but boy oh boy do I love this lotion! It's so simple and yet it gets everything right—it absorbs quickly when applied right out of the shower, hydrates well, doesn't leave behind a greasy feel, is fairly inexpensive, and comes in a big, satisfying bottle that seems to last forever. Oh, and it comes with a pump so that it's easy to dispense. What's not to love?!

  • Key ingredients: Shea butter, niacinamide
  • Size: 13.5 fl. oz.

Glowing customer review: "I’ve spent large amounts of money on moisturizers throughout my life. Even the ridiculously expensive ones from the dermatologist office. Most of them I never finished because they didn’t work. I bought this lotion last winter and I could feel my skin drinking it up. My skin looked and felt so much better. I even saw a scab on my arm that the moisturizer had actually rehydrated. I immediately went back on Amazon and ordered the face cream and facial cleanser. I’m obsessed with this product! Never in my life has something worked so well on my horribly dry skin. My husband even said my skin looks so much better and it feels so soft. YAY!"

Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Face Cleanser

Pros

  • Fragrance free
  • Super gentle for daily or twice-daily usage
  • Doesn't strip the skin's natural moisture barrier

Cons

  • Some people disliked that this cleanser doesn't get foamy

I used to be a strict cleanser-at-night, splash-of-water-in-the-morning girlie because of how irritable my skin can be, but this cleanser is so gentle that I can use it twice a day with zero issue. My sister, who has dry skin, likes uses it in the morning because of how moisturizing it is—and I personally loooove that it takes off any bits of makeup that my cleansing balm didn't remove.

  • Key ingredients: Ceramide-3, niacinamide, La Roche-Posay thermal spring water
  • Size: 13.52 oz

Glowing customer review: "I’ve been using this face wash for the past year and it’s done WONDERS!! 😫 My skin tends to be kinda dry but slightly oily in my T-zone and around my nostrils. I’m also prone to breakouts, and anything scented tends to make things worse. I could never find a skincare routine that fully worked for me and made the breakouts stop. I was putting in SO MUCH WORK with no results, and then I started using this stuff and LET ME TELL YOU—MY SKIN HAS NEVER LOOKED/FELT SO GOOD!"

Toleriane Purifying Foaming Facial Cleanser

Pros

  • Doesn't dry out the skin
  • Removes leftover makeup that your initial cleanse missed
  • Lathers nicely
  • Fragrance-free

Cons

  • Some people had issues with the cap breaking or leaking

Words like "purifying cleanser for oily skin" typically give me traumatic flashbacks to the days of Proactiv and Clean & Clear, but like most other La Roche-Posay products, this foaming cleanser is actually good for sensitive skin!! It'll remove excess oil and makeup without affecting your skin's natural barrier. Hannah Chubb, Lifestyle Editor, says, "This cleanser lathers up in a snap and takes my leftover makeup straight off. I swear by it in my skincare routine (and my acne-prone skin is forever grateful)!”

  • Key ingredients: Ceramide-3, niacinamide, La Roche-Posay thermal spring water
  • Size: 6.76 fl. oz.

Glowing customer review: "This is probably my fave cleanser on the planet currently with my limited budget. It is so refreshing to use. It gets all the dirt and grime off my face while also leaving it so moisturized!! I like to alternate between this size and the larger size just for variety. 10/10 would recommend."

Anthelios Melt-In Milk Sunscreen SPF 60

Pros

  • Oxybenzone- and octinoxate-free
  • Non-comedogenic
  • Can be used on body and face

Cons

  • Some people said it burns if it runs into your eyes

I'd like to give a shoutout to La Roche-Posay for proving to me that body sunscreen doesn't have to be a whole sticky, smelly ordeal. This melt-in milk sunscreen does just that—it melts right in and moisturizes your skin while protecting it from the sun's strong rays.

Beth Gillette personally approves of this pick. "As a beauty editor, it's my job to test every single sunscreen out there. And I take my job very seriously! So when I tell you that I actually went through an entire tube of this lightweight, milky SPF 60 last summer, know that it means I really frickin' liked it," she said. "It absorbs into my skin immediately, leaving behind zero white cast or film, making it ideal for my oily face and sweaty bod."

  • Key ingredients: La Roche-Posay spring thermal water, cell-ox shield technology
  • Size: 3.0 fl. oz.

Glowing customer review: "This stuff is magic. It is extremely moisturizing, and this is coming from someone who has extremely dry and sensitive skin. It seriously does "melt" into your skin and gives you this flawless glow, even though that's not even the point of it lol. A little goes a long way, so even though it is on the expensive side, it lasts a long time and is so worth it. I've never been even slightly burned while having this on so it does its job extremely well. I would highly recommend it."

Hyalu B5 Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum for Face

Pros

  • Ideal for every skin type
  • Hydrates skin and helps it retain moisture
  • Won't cause acne

Cons

  • Has a slight fragrance

Throughout my journey with medications like Accutane and harsh prescription retinoids, I had to eliminate a lot of other skincare products from my routine. But the one hero product that I could always, always, always count on was La Roche-Posay's hyaluronic acid serum. Nothing helped my skin retain moisture like this simple, gentle serum—probably because hyaluronic acid molecules can hold up to 1000 TIMES THEIR WEIGHT IN WATER, which is wild. Oh, and pro tip: for best results, apply on wet skin (!!) or combine with a hydrating toner.

  • Key ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, madecassoside, glycerin, vitamin B5, La Roche-Posay thermal spring water
  • Size: 30 ml

Glowing customer review: "Instant plump! This gave my skin instant rejuvenation. My face came alive and looked nourished. It smoothed out my skin and gave me a look of hydration. A little goes a long way with this product. My skin absorbed it almost instantly."

MelaB3 Serum Intense Anti-Dark Spot Serum

Pros

  • Corrects age spots, sunspots, liver spots, acne marks, and uneven skin tone
  • Gentle on normal and mature skin
  • Doesn't feel greasy
  • Can be applied morning and evening

Cons

  • Has a slight fragrance
  • Some say it pilled under foundation

FYI, there were 18 years of research that went into Melasyl, the key ingredient of this brand new serum that's designed to address hyperpigmentation. Deanna Pai tested this new launch and gave it her stamp of approval, explaining, "I get hyperpigmentation just *thinking* about hyperpigmentation (or so it feels), so I'm down for anything that promises to even out my skin tone. This lightweight formula has a new ingredient ~exclusive~ to the brand as well as 10% niacinamide—an old standby for controlling oil and pigment production—to fade even my most stubborn acne scars."

  • Key ingredients: Melasyl, niacinamide, La Roche-Posay thermal spring water
  • Size: 30 ml

Glowing customer review: "I have some dark spots from chicken pox scars. This product lightened them to invisible after using one bottle morning and night as directed. It is very gentle on my aging skin. I put it on after cleansing and use my sunblock or night cream after. I have learned to carry a small container of sunblock when I go out to reapply as the day goes on so hopefully my spots won’t reappear."

10% Pure Vitamin C Serum

Pros

  • Smooth, thick texture that absorbs quickly
  • Brightens skin tone and smoothes texture
  • A little goes a long way

Cons

  • Some customers wished the packaging didn't let in so much air, which can lead to the product oxidizing

This vitamin C serum contains 10% ascorbic acid, and despite the fact that it's one of the most powerful forms of vitamin C, several reviewers noted that they didn't experience any irritation. The serum formulation also includes salicylic acid, an exfoliant, and neurosensine, to calm the skin. Just remember to keep this in a cool, dark place to avoid the serum going bad!

  • Key ingredients: Vitamin C, salicylic acid, neurosensine
  • Size: 30 ml

Glowing customer review: "The serum was pure heaven when I applied it to my clean face. It felt like pure velvet being swept across my face & neck. It blended in nicely not too thick or thin, leaving my skin butter soft. No dryness or tightness noted at all. Dried in great within a couple of minutes, so I could apply my next product. Highly recommend."

Effaclar Duo Dual Action Acne Spot Treatment Cream

Pros

  • Oil-free texture
  • Potent combo of benzoyl peroxide and LHA, a salicylic acid derivative
  • Good for cystic acne, blackheads, whiteheads, and other blemishes

Cons

  • May dry out the skin if you over-apply

Don't worry, my breakout-prone friends—along with their usual soothing, gentle products, La Roche-Posay also boasts an acne-kicking Effaclar line that's ideal for anyone treating congested skin. Their Effaclar Duo Acne Treatment contains 5.5% benzoyl peroxide to clear out all sorts of pimples and allow the skin to heal. This spot treatment can also be used on any body zits that you'd like to tackle!

  • Key ingredients: Benzoyl perioxide, lipo-hydroxy acid (LHA)
  • Size: 35 fl. oz.

Glowing customer review: "Worth the price!! I apply a good amount on my face at night and by morning, the blemishes are still there but not as inflamed or red. By the second or third night, you can really see a difference. I was using Curology before this but it was leaving my face too oily. This works EVEN better and FASTER!"

Effaclar Adapalene Gel 0.1% Acne Treatment

Pros

  • Available over the counter
  • A more sophisticated and gentle formulation than other brands of adapalene
  • Ideal for long-term anti-aging benefits
  • Clears hyperpigmentation and acne scarring

Cons

  • Has a usage learning curve
  • Cannot be used with other exfoliating acids

Before I graduated to tretinoin (aka the absolute strongest of all prescription retinoids), I used La Roche-Posay's adapalene. Rather than just targeting existing breakouts, this gentle retinoid clears out clogged pores and prevents acne before it forms.

A word to the wise—start slow and only use the recommended pea-size amount! You might experience some initial dryness or breakouts as your skin clears itself out. The "it gets worse before it gets better" period is super typical for any retinoid. Once you get past that, it'll be clear (like, very clear) sailing from there on out.

  • Key ingredients: 0.1% adapalene
  • Size: 1.6 oz

Glowing customer review: "This stuff has basically gotten rid of the rest of my acne that didn’t go away with the birth control pill. The biggest difference I see is in the clogging rate of my pores—I have no blackheads or texture now. Secondly, hyperpigmentation goes away so much faster. For example, if I had a dark spot from acne that I had picked, normally it would take at least two months to fade away entirely, but now it takes about three weeks to a month. I really don’t have to wear any make up now."

Micellar Cleansing Water

Pros

  • Oil-free formula
  • Suitable for all skin types
  • Cleanses without any rinsing required

Cons

  • Slightly more expensive than other micellar waters

If there's one thing that French girls, skincare addicts, and lazy people (🙋🏻‍♀️) can agree on, it's that micellar water is the best. It's a gentle, diluted cleansing water that cleanses the skin without any suds or scrubbing. On top of that, La Roche-Posay's micellar water is made of their signature thermal spring water, which is rich in soothing antioxidants and natural minerals like selenium. It's also an excellent makeup remover!

  • Key ingredients: La Roche-Posay thermal spring water, glycerin
  • Size: 6.76 fl. oz.

Glowing customer review: "This Micellar Cleansing Water has been a game changer for my skin. It’s leaves my skin feeling light, soft, and moisturized. I replaced my disposable makeup remover towelettes for this and a reusable cloth and I’m very happy with my decision."

Cicaplast Lip Balm B5

Pros

  • Moisturizing without being sticky
  • Doesn't require constant reapplication
  • Fragrance-free

Cons

  • One customer said it ran out quickly

If cheap lip balms have left you feeling cracked and discouraged, it's time to pull out the big guns—and by big guns, I mean La Roche-Posay's Cicaplast Lip Balm. One customer said that their dermatologist recommended it for dry lips and it "worked better than Vaseline." Beth Gillette, Cosmo Beauty Editor, loves this lip balm. "I know lip balms are trendy and all," she says, "but this one is heavy duty. It majorly hydrates my lips and makes 'em feel and look a little plumper too. Best of all, it's not sticky or goopy at all."

  • Key ingredients: Vitamin B (panthenol), shea butter, La Roche-Posay thermal spring water
  • Size: N/A

Glowing customer review: "Best lip balm ever. It has worked miracles for my lips. My lips always get extremely chapped and the corners of my mouth tear in the winter. Nothing I have ever tried has helped, until I started using this.I can only hope it never gets discontinued because it has solved a life long struggle of mine."

Redermic R Retinol Eye Cream

Pros

  • Targets dark circles and wrinkles
  • Won't irritate sensitive skin
  • A little goes a long way

Cons

  • Some customers had trouble with product coming out when they opened the cap

We love a good retinol around here. But unfortch, retinols are usually wayyyy too strong to be applied directly on the sensitive, delicate skin around your eye. That's where the Redermic R Retinol eye cream comes in—this product is formulated specifically for safe usage on your eyelids and under-eye area (so no, this isn't just regular lotion repackaged in a smaller bottle).

  • Key ingredients: Retinol, caffeine, La Roche-Posay thermal spring water
  • Size: 0.5 fl. oz.

Glowing customer review: "I had a series of laser treatments done to my face this year. The esthetician took extremely high resolution photographs of my face before and after the treatments. My eyes were closed for the photos, so my eyelids were completely visible. I was really pleased with the results of the laser treatment, but I was absolutely floored at the results from this eye cream. I wasn’t even trying to assess the effectiveness of this cream when we looked at the before and afters. The improvement literally jumped off the photo and slapped me in my face. It was an undeniable, material improvement. Also, if you haven’t ever had a laser treatment, you wear specialized goggles that protect the eye area. The only change was this eye cream. I no longer feel like I need an eyelid lift!"
