If You're Using Hot Tools, You Need A Heat Protection Spray—We Only Recommend These 15

Because burnt, sizzled hair isn’t doing us any favors.

By and

Consider heat protectants the SPF of hair care. In the same way that we use sunscreen to shield our skin from harmful UV rays, a heat protectant protects our hair from damage when exposed to heat. The high temperatures from a curling iron, hair straightener, or blow dryer can wreak havoc on our hair’s outer cuticle and lead to dryness, split ends, and dullness—similar to how excessive sunshine on our skin can cause wrinkles and cellular damage. Now you get why it's so freakin' necessary and something you def shouldn't skip.

Though a heat protectant's main selling point is its ability to prevent the issues above, some can even double as styling and treatment products that can (1) prep your hair for a blowout, (2) add extra moisture to dry hair, and/or (3) extend the life of your color. Amazing, right? To find out more, I consulted some experts—hairstylists Castillo Bataille, Garren, Leo Izquierdo, and Nunzio Saviano—to get the top tips and discover the best heat protectants on the market:

Our top picks for the best heat protectants of 2025:

Keep reading for the entire list of best heat protectant sprays, creams, and serums that can be used whether you’re giving yourself a classic blowout, some beachy waves with a wand, or creating a sleek style with your flat iron.

If you feel the same way about heat protectants, I'm here to tell you that you no longer have to compromise when you have this genius multitasker.

The four-in-one mist works overtime, functioning as a detangler, anti-frizz spray, and a protectant against heat and UV rays. It manages to do this with an all-natural, clean formula that's made with butterfly ginger, avocado, and its namesake guava (FYI: we're in a guava girl summer rn). Full stop: it's no surprise it won top accolades in our Clean Beauty Awards.

Do you really need a heat protectant?

line breaker

Absolutely, without a doubt—yes. Not using a heat protectant is like walking out into the sun without sunblock, says Castillo Bataille, a celebrity hairstylist and Matrix Brand Ambassador. A good heat protectant on your hair will help reduce breakage and prevent damage to your hair’s protective cuticle. If you’re using a blow dryer or hot tool with more than 350-degree heat, you need to be protecting your hair with a heat protectant, says celebrity hairstylist Garren.

Heat styling tools often reach damaging temperatures, explains hairstylist Nunzio Saviano. Heat protectants provide thermal protection and create a barrier around each hair strand to protect the cuticle, lock in moisture, and prevent frizz and flyaways too. And JSYK, hair that’s color-treated or chemically processed is even more susceptible to damage and breakage.

How do heat protectants work?

line breaker

Heat protectants work by coating the hair with a protective layer of oils (like coconut oil and sunflower oil) and/or silicones (like dimethicone or cyclomethicone), says Bataille. “A heat protectant is usually applied to damp hair right after washing and before drying with a blow dryer and styling with a hot tool,” he says.

How to choose the best heat protectant

hearst linebreak

Consider your hair type.

Most heat protectants come in a spray, cream, or serum form, so you’ll want to choose a formula that best suits your hair type and texture. For curly hair types, Bataille recommends applying a cream-based heat protectant right out of the shower and then diffusing with a blow dryer for full and bouncy curls.

For those who want a bouncy blowout, Bataille suggests using a lightweight heat protectant spray like the Oribe Royal Blowout Heat Styling Spray. If you’re looking for a razor-straight finish and mega shine, try a heat-protectant serum. And if you have thick hair? A heat protectant balm might be best, says hairstylist Leo Izquierdo. It will give your hair a super-smooth finish and just the right. We recommend the Briogeo Farewell Frizz Blow Dry Perfection Heat Protectant Cream.

Determine what level of protection you need.

Not all heat protectants provide the same level of heat protection, so you want to check either the product label or online description for the exact degrees of protection a formula offers before you purchase. TLDR: if you like to use your wand or flat iron at a higher temp, like 400 or 425 degrees, be sure your heat protectant can offer that much protection—if not more.
